That all depends on his strength and swing speed. If he has above average strength and swing speed, the XL3 is best. If he has average or below average strength and swing speed, the S3 is best.

Normally, a one-piece bat like the 2013 Easton S3 is better suited for a power hitter. A two-piece bat like the Easton S1 or Easton S2 would be better for a contact hitter.

You could go go up to a 30" bat, but I would recommend staying with a 29" bat right now. Since your son is a contact or line drive hitter I would suggest a balanced two-piece bat like the Easton S1 or S2.

I'm looking at this bat and the 2013 XL3, my decision is between the -13 and the -11. My son is 9, 4'7" and 75 pounds. He hits with some power. Can you please tell me why a parent would choose a -13, -12, or -11 bat for their kid. Demarini Voodoo or Vendetta is another option for us, but they are all -13. Bat size varies by player. Based on his height, weight, and current size bat, a 30" model is recommended with a weight between 18 and 20 oz.

Can someone explain the whole "Minus #" with respect to these bats? What does that number mean and how do you match the correct number to a player's ability? TrueDat
The minus (-) number is called the length to weight ratio. this is the numerical difference between the length and the weight of the bat. For instance, a 30" 20 oz. bat is a -10. A 29" 16 oz. bat is a -13. The best way to choose a weight is to look at the weight of the player's current bat. You never want to move down in weight from what they are currently using, and it's always recommended to move up 1-3 ounces with every new bat.

You should try going with a
2013 DeMarini CF5: DXCFL Youth. It will be a little heavier than the drop 13 he used last year, but it is a balanced two-piece bat, which is perfect for any contact hitter so he should have no problem with the weight adjustment.

Two-piece bats like the Easton S2 will offer better sting and vibration reduction compared to one-piece bats like the 2013 Easton S3: YB13S3. Based on his size, a 30" bat would be a good choice with a weight between 17 and 20 oz. Weight comes down to the size bat he is currently using as you do not want to move down in weight and will typically want to move up 1-3 oz.

The Easton S3 is not going to have the same extended barrel like the XL series. In my opinion the Rawlings Machine is going to perform similar to the Easton S3, although the Machine will be a little more durable.

Cal Ripken Jr. division only allows 2 1/4" barrel diameter bats, so you would not be able to use a big barrel. They have to be 2 1/4" barrel and have the BPF 1.15 stamp.

Given that your player is going to be starting out in coach pitch I would lean towards going with the more balanced Easton S3 (YB13S3). The more end-loaded 2014 Easton XL3 (YB14X3) would be a bit tougher to swing so it would be more of an adjustment to face different pitching.
