PING MAKES THE BAT Alex Ballgame Player

Pros: The pop, balance, and PING is why you buy this bat. The sound of this bat is a beautiful aluminum sound that draws attention to the hitter. If you don't like a loud sound on contact then hit with wood.

Questions and Answers (20)

Have a question about the 2019 Rawlings VELO BBCOR Baseball Bat: BB9V3? Ask our team of experts and they will respond within 24 hours.

What are the differences between this bat & the 2019 Marucci Cat 8 BBCOR? Which has a more balanced swing weight? Which is more forgiving and has larger sweet spot? Thank you,
glynn
The 2019 Rawlings VELO BBCOR Baseball Bat: BB9V3 utilizes a Comp-Lite end cap to help optimize the overall bat weight and swing weight. The advantage the Cat series has is in the size of the barrel and an anti-vibration knob to reduce vibrations. Both models will not be too forgiving on contact as the one-piece alloy construction is going to conduct vibrations to the player's hands.
Tyler
Would using lizard skin help to reduce vibration on this bat? Also, is there a one piece bat like this that doesn't have bad vibration?
John
Using a thicker grip tape on the 2019 Rawlings VELO BBCOR Baseball Bat: BB9V3 may offer slight reduction of vibration but the only way to complete rid of the vibration is consistent contact on the meat of the barrel. Some one-piece bats have started to incorporate varying designs with regards to handle and knob construction to help reduce vibration. Unfortunately we are not aware of anything with regards to the 2019 Rawlings VELO BBCOR Baseball Bat: BB9V3 that is going to offer vibration control.
Cameron
What is the difference between the 2018 Rawlings VELO BBCOR bat and the 2019 Rawlings VELO BBCOR bat?
Travis
The biggest difference between the 2019 Rawlings VELO BBCOR Baseball Bat: BB9V3 and the 2018 Rawlings VELO BBCOR will be cosmetics.
Max
Is the bat grip different than last years?
Player
The grip on the 2019 Rawlings VELO BBCOR Baseball Bat: BB9V3 is different than the 2018 model. In our opinion, the 2018 Rawlings VELO BBCOR Baseball Bat: BB8V3 was a bit more tacky than this year's model.
Daveron
Does this bat feel like a Louisville Omaha 517? If not, which Rawlings bat would most likely feel like an Omaha?
Christian Coipel
The Rawlings bat most similar to the Omaha 517 will not be this 2019 Rawlings VELO BBCOR Baseball Bat (BB9V3). The reason is because this VELO has a composite end-cap on it that the Omaha 517 would not have featured. The most similar Rawlings bat to the Omaha 517 in regard to design will be the Rawlings 5150 (BB953). Since the design is so similar, I think the feel will be most similar as well.
Ben
How does the cosmetics of the 2018 bat change to the 2019 bat and does it change the bat at all?
Bill
The 2018 Rawlings VELO BBCOR Baseball Bat: BB8V3 offered a White / Gray / Blue color way, while the 2019 Rawlings VELO BBCOR Baseball Bat: BB9V3 is Gold / Black. This doesn't really change the bat at all, the construction and design is the same as the 2018 version.
Logan
My son has the Easton Ghost X and I’ve been researching this bat and felt it and it feels more controllable through the zone. Thoughts on if I should buy or keep him with his Ghost?
John
The 2019 Rawlings VELO BBCOR Baseball Bat: BB9V3 is an extremely balanced one-piece option with a comp-lite end cap. Younger and/or smaller high school players find success with this bat, especially getting it through the zone.
Daveron
Is the barrel size the same on this and the 2018 model?
Scotty
Yes, the barrel size of the 2019 Rawlings VELO BBCOR Baseball Bat: BB9V3 will be the same as the 2018 Rawlings VELO BBCOR Baseball Bbat: BB8V3.
Max
What ounces can be purchased at the highest weight? I was looking for ounces ranging from 34 oz. to 36 oz. Also, what was Mr. Dick "Richie" Allen bat's ounces at the highest ounces? Thanks.
DARRELL CLAY
The longest BBCOR models available to the general public are 34" in length, which means they will only weigh 31 oz, since all BBCOR models are required to be a -3 drop. I have heard of the manufacturers sometimes offering/selling 35" models, but typically I have only heard of this happening with colleges who have contracts/deals with those manufacturers. You can try contacting the manufacturer directly for more information. Unfortunately I do not know do Mr. Dick "Richie" Allen is or what his bat might've been.
Kyle J.
What are the differences between the 2018 and 2019 Velo? Playing in the MidWest where it's chilly, is there too much sting in these bats? Contact hitter with some power, and have enjoyed Cat 7 and Mako bats in past.
mike
Not too much has changed from the 2018 to the 2019 VELO BBCOR by Rawlings. These bats are one-piece models, so they will sting a bit more than a two-piece model if you mishit balls off the end or get jammed inside.
Kyle J.
How does the 2019 Rawlings Velo BBCOR compare to the 2019 Marucci Cat 8 BBCOR? Also, is the Marucci Connect Cat 8 a big difference compared to the Velo?
Jose
The Marucci Cat 8 and the Rawlings VELO should have similar feels since they are both one-piece, aluminum models. In my opinion the VELO feels slightly more balanced than the Cat 8, but not by much. The Cat 8 Connect is a two-piece, hybrid design with an alloy barrel and composite handle, so will offer a bit more flex and slightly different feel.
Kyle
My son will need to use a BBCOR bat next season. He currently uses a 30", -5 bat. He is 5' 2", 105 lbs. I've read the Velo is one of the most balanced bats in the market, which he needs since he is a contact hitter. Would the Velo 31", -3 be too big a jump for him? Or would a 30", -3 would be more beneficial?
Jonah
With the player specs provided, it would be suggested to stay at a 30" option of the Rawlings VELO BBCOR Baseball Bat: BB9V3.
Daveron
Has this bat changed at all from the 2016 model?
Jameth
Very little has changed with regards to the VELO BBCOR models. The Rawlings VELO BBCOR Baseball Bat: BB9V3 only differs from the 2016 model based on the color and grip tape.
Cameron
My son has this bat and he loves the grip. How can I obtain more of this grip off the 2019 Velo?
Q
The best way to try and get the same grip that Rawlings is using on the Rawlings VELO BBCOR Baseball Bat: BB9V3 would be to contact Rawlings directly.
Cameron
Why did the price drop? Is there something wrong? Is it about to be banned by NCAA?
John
There is nothing wrong with this Rawlings VELO BBCOR (BB9V3). Once a bat has been out for an extended period of time, we are released from the price lock agreement with the manufacturer and are able to reduce the price as we see fit.
Kyle
Compare this model to the 2018 model?
mike
Only minor changes were made to the Rawlings VELO BBCOR Baseball Bat: BB9V3 when comparing it to the 2018 model. Those changes were color and grip tape.
Cameron
What’s the difference in this bat and the Louisville Slugger 619?
Jeff
Both the Rawlings VELO BBCOR Baseball Bat: BB9V3 and the LS Solo 619 are one-piece alloy bats with balanced swing weights and composite end caps. The VELO, and the acoustic alloy, will be a louder bat on contact; this is the biggest difference between the two models.
Cameron
How long has this bat been on the market?
noel
The Rawlings VELO BBCOR Baseball Bat: BB9V3 was released on 6/4/2018.
Max
Will there be any major difference between the 2019 Velo and 2020 Velo? (I see the new one is made of A909I alloy rather than the acoustic alloy; also the 2020 have same end cap as the 2019 Velo)
Q
From what I have read on the Rawlings site, you are correct. The aluminum material on the 2020 VELO will be updated from the acoustic alloy on this 2019 Rawlings VELO BBCOR Baseball Bat (BB9V3). As well, the 2020 VELO will have a longer 2" end-cap made of composite material. I would imagine the 2" composite end-cap should make the bat feel even slightly more balanced than the past year versions of the VELO. Those updates on the 2020 version of the bat might make it worth moving to the 2020 VELO from the 2019 VELO.
Ben
What is the real difference between the Velo and the 5150?
Tim
They are similar models with one piece alloy construction with the pOp 2.0 technology and a balanced swing weight. The slight differences will be the alloy used and the end caps. Both are great options.

About the Brand

Rawlings is a major manufacturer of competitive team sports equipment and apparel for baseball, basketball, and football, as well as licensed MLB, NFL, and NCAA retail products. Rawlings is a major supplier to professional, collegiate, interscholastic and amateur organizations worldwide, including the Official Baseball Supplier to Major League Baseball.

The first real innovation in glove making occurred in 1912 when Rawlings Sporting Goods Company introduced the "Sure Catch" glove, which was "endorsed by leading players all over the country." The Sure Catch was a one-piece glove with sewn-in finger channels and looked better suited for a duck's foot than a man's hand. Catchers' mitts used at the time were large and bulky with a single leather thong passing for a web.

In 1920, Bill Doak, a journeyman pitcher for the St. Louis Cardinals, approached Rawlings with an idea for improving the baseball glove from a mere protective device to a genuine aid in fielding. The "Bill Doak" model was so revolutionary that it stayed in Rawlings' line until 1953. Its key feature was a multi-thong web laced into the first finger and thumb, which created for the first time in baseball's young life, a natural pocket.

In 1925, Rawlings unveiled a three-fingered fielder's glove, and ten years later improved the Bill Doak model with a two-piece leather web. At the same time, the "T" web became a rage for first basemen's mitts. The pocket underwent a pronounced change in 1941 when the Trapper Mitt, also known as the Claw, appeared. The "Deep Well" pocket was so unique that Rawlings quickly patented it. The design was improved in 1950 by adding a leather piece across the top. Another significant creation occurred in 1948 with the three-fingered Playmaker. A five-fingered fielder's model, with all fingers laced together, provided greater pocket control.

The six-fingered Trap-Eze evolved in the 1960's. In more recent years, Rawlings produced the Fastback design, which gives a glove a snugger fit, greater extension, and overall control. The Holdster is a slot through which a finger can be extended for additional protection from impacts on the pocket. Then, there is the Edge-U-Cated Heel with its extended U-shaped lacing and the Pro H Web and much-copied Basket Web.

Some of Rawlings more recent glove innovations also include the unique Spin-Stopper design which reduces ball spin when the ball hits the glove, and the Cantilever glove design feature that provides a cushioned area between the hand and the glove's palm area. In all, Rawlings has produced and patented more functionally innovative glove features and designs than that of any other glove manufacturer. The result is that the modern baseball glove is much larger, more comfortable, better padded and made to last far longer than its ancestors. It is not uncommon to see today's Major League players wearing the same Rawlings' glove they wore during their college playing days. In fact, Rawlings is the #1 glove in the major leagues. Rawlings maintains about 65 models of baseball and softball mitts and gloves in its line. The prototypes of virtually all of them have been field tested by professionals before entering a sporting goods dealer's inventory.
