At JustBats.com, our Bat Experts are comprised of former baseball and softball players. These folks love answering customer questions as much as they love the game.
One of the questions they receive the most is Can I use a softball bat in a baseball game? It's a good question, but JustBats.com is here to set the record straight once-and-for-all.
First of all, there are two types softball bats -- Slow Pitch and Fastpitch. Technically, you could use a slow pitch softball bat in a fastpitch game without ruining the bat. However, since bats are made specifically for the game or League they're used in, the slow pitch bat would not hit the ball as well because of the larger weight.
More importantly, you should not and cannot use a softball bat for baseball because a bat is crafted specifically for the League it will be used in. So, softball bats are almost all 2 1/4" in diameter at the barrel, but they also are constructed differently in terms of weight distribution. This causes softball bats to break more frequently, especially if used with a ball (such as a baseball) that the bat was not designed to hit.
Since softball bats should not be used in baseball games, here is a helpful reminder of governing bodies/certifications and resources to help decide what bat you should use:
- BBCOR certification (Baseball)
- USABat standard (Baseball)
- USSSA approved bats (Baseball)
- Amateur Softball Association - ASA (Softball)
- United States Specialty Sports Association - USSSA (Softball)
- Independent Softball Association - ISA (Softball)
- National Softball Association - NSA (Softball)
- International Softball Federation - ISF (Softball)
