Description

The SL12VXL features the USSSA 1.15 stamp and is legal for use in For the past few years, the H2 was Louisville Slugger's flagship composite/alloy hybrid design. This season, Louisville Slugger ups the ante with a new bat, new materials and performance that will leave you astonished! Building off the success of EXOGRID, Vertex Technology is the next step in optimizing the composite/alloy hybrid design. The Vertex design utilizes Louisville Slugger's LS-2X Composite which uses thinner high-strength and lightweight graphite fibers to create the optimal feeling handle. These thinner fibers allow for more layers, giving the Vertex added stiffness and durability. The handle of the Vertex is actually stiffer than the EXOGRID which allows more barrel flex, resulting in maximum trampoline effect and, ultimately, greater performance! The barrel of the Vertex is constructed using AC21 Scandium Alloy. Combined with composite materials, the AC21 Scandium Alloy ensures thinner walls with outstanding durability and unmatched performance. The Vertex has a synthetic cushioned grip on the 7/8 inch tapered handle to give players an unbeatable feeling of confidence when they step up to the plate. With a gigantic hitting surface on the 2 3/4 inch barrel, players can easily translate that confidence into multi home run games! Louisville Slugger: Intimidate at the Plate! The Vertex is 1.15 BPF Certified. It is backed by a Full Twelve (12) Month Manufacturer's Warranty. Free Shipping!

Pros: Great pop. Nice grip and paint job. Does seem hotter then 100% composite bats that we have been using.

Cons: Will rattle your hands on off center hits. Not sure if that relates to less ball speed compared to composite bats. Extra pop on well hit balls makes up for that.

Pros: Bat has incredible pop, this is by far the best bat my two boys have used and they have used a variety of high-line bats. We are very pleased. The whole team wanted to use it after they saw a few boys hit with it at practice.

Cons: Expensive

Pros: This bat has incredible pop and a huge sweet spot. Entire team was wowed by the hits coming off this bat. This is by far the best bat we have used. Much more than I was expecting. Son hit a monster homerun in practice and he has never came close to clearing the fence before. LS TPX has outdone themselves on this one.

Cons: Pricey bat but well worth it.

Pros: Great bat. Only had a few days but it seems to have as much pop as my son's Rival. Ball jumps off the bat. has a very balanced feel and swing speed is great. Great solid sound. He has hit 100+ balls off the tee with it and LOVES this bat. Swung the new VooDoo, and several others before purchasing this bat. This bat just felt better overall.

Cons: None so far.

Pros: I have both the Vertex and the Exogrid 2. I like the Vertex because it has a huge sweetspot although it feels a bit heavier than the Exogrid 2. In few words, the Vertex is a heck of a bat!

Cons: Unlike the Exogrid 2, the Vertex stings a little if not hit in the sweetspot.

Pros: Son is 4' 55lbs. Smallest player on his 8u team (He just turned 7 4 weeks ago). This past weekend he 2 of the longest balls hit all weekend. Now if I could only get the other kids to stop swinging the Prodigy and come on over to TPX. This bat has good weight balance and he makes it look effortless. The white grip may get dirty but the feel of it is nice.

Cons: Takes several hundred hits to break in but watch out when this occurs

Pros: With two boys playing select ball we have purchased at least a dozen big barrel bats over the years. This one is far superior to any we have owned and has nice pop right out of the wrapper too. Couldn't be happier.

Cons: None. Have had this bat for at least 6 months and no problems.

Pros: My 11 y/o son has owned Combat Virus, B2, Easton Rival (Orange), Omen bats...this bat is his favorite. It is well balanced, it has a large (and soft on the hands) sweet spot due to the fusion of materials (alloy barrel and composite handle. Results: farther and hotter hits, higher batting average due to more confidence at the plate. Look at other travel ball teams swinging the Vertex...now you know why! Lastly, USSSA approved for 2012!

Cons: White grip shows dirt more easily than a darker one.

I've tried everything from worth to cf5's nothing hold a candle to this bat as far as pop and durability. This thing seems to get hotter by the day!

Cons: None other than I wish the made a 2 5/8 version for other leagues.

Pros: 7/8 Coach doesn't know what he's talking about. This is the most balanced bat I have ever come across. It's not the least bit end-loaded. My son absolutely loves it. Moved up to a 29/19 from a 28/18 Prodigy, and you really can't tell much difference in the swing weight between the two. This bat may feel almost too light for a big power hitter. I would recommend the Demarini Voodoo for power hitters. That bat is end-loaded (and a great bat to boot).

Cons: Paying over $150 for a senior league bat seems crazy to me, but I shelled out the cash anyway.

Pros: This bat issoo good! This is coming from a players perspective. This is the best bat I've ever hit with. Better than the Omen, B2, B3, B4, and every other bat. It's actually an accurate weight! Demarinis tend to run heavy. my friends bat was supposed to be20 oz but it was 22 oz. I weighed this and is was dead on 19.5 oz. I hit so well with this in games.

Pros: This bat isn't composite so it's good right out of the box. It has so much pop! I could barely even get on base with my omen last year and now I'm hitting line drives over the center fielders head. It has a huge barrel so it's a lot easier to hit a low or high pitch. Amazing bat!

Pros: Great pop initially.

Cons: I purchased 3 Vertex bats for my 3 boys - each bat has impressions, dents and uneven spots. Louisville replaced the one that was dented first but the replacement soon thereafter became dented. Sure I can return the dented bats for replacements, but what's the point? I do not recommend this bat.

Questions and Answers

Have a question about the Louisville Slugger TPX Vertex Senior League Baseball Bat: SL12VXL? Ask our team of experts and they will respond within 24 hours.

Does anyone know how this bat is weighted? I assume it is more of a balanced weighted bat since I cannot find anywhere that states it is end-loaded? batboy
This will be an evenly balanced bat. In general, all baseball bats will be evenly weighted.
Mark
Can i get an end cap for a triton 3x composite model slxt234. 2 3/4 in barrel 30 in 20 oz Mike
We actually do not sell or have any end caps. If there is a warranty issue with you bat you can attempt to contact Louisville Slugger directly. Their phone number is 1-800-282-2287
Brett
Does it have the BBCOR stamp on it and legal for 2012? leo
No, BBCOR bats will only be -3 Adult bats.
Kris
is there two different color bats are they are one sided color. how does this compare to the prodigy blues coach
The SL12VXL is a two piece hybrid model bat with an alloy barrel with a -9.5 and is for hitters that prefer a little more flex in their bat. The Prodigy is a one piece alloy bat with a -10 that will be more stiff, possibly for a power hitter. And yes, the Sl12VXL is white on one side and blue on the other.
Shelbe
My son swings a prodigy now and loves it. It just isn't very durable and I was looking for a durable alternative. Since this bat isn't as stiff as the prodigy, would you be hesitant to get it thinking he might now like it? Can you explain the difference between a stiff bat and a bat that flexes? How will my son tell? Jeff
That's quite a lengthy explaination to post here. You can give us a call and one of our reps will be glad to explain it, and offer some suggestions.
lkh
ok so i used this bat and it is pretty good but i am not sure if i should buy it what would you prefer for a 11 year old who is 5ft and i nedd a stamp sllllllllllllluggggggggggggggggerrrrrr
I would double check and make sure the 2 3/4" barrels are allowed in your league. If it is allowed, it does have the 1.15 BPF stamp on it. It is a very nice bat with lots of pop!
lkh
I play usssa this is for the ? up top and yes it is alloweed sllllllluuuuuugggggggggerrrrrrrr
Yes. It has the USSSA stamp, making it legal for play in 2012.
Kara
Trying to decide between this bat and the 2012 Demarni voodoo for a 10 yr old contact hitter. Any suggestions? JB
The Voodoo will offer a little more flex than the Vertex, which usually benefits contact hitters looking to add more pop. The Vertex is a great bat, it just won't offer quite as much flex.
John
all things equal how does the Vertex compare to the EXOgrid 2 and what type of hitter is it more suited for? Keith
The Vertex is a 2 piece design with an alloy barrel and composite in the handle. The Exogrid is a 1 piece that has the alloy barrel with carbon inserts in the handle, great for power hitters.
Linda
Which is better, this bat or the Combat in a 29/19? cfb
There are several versions of the COMBAT in a 29-19, and it kind of depends on the batter, if they are a contact hitter, then I'd go for the Vertex, if he is a power hitter, I'd lean toward the COMBAT.
Linda
What's your opinion? Is the tpx z100 or this bat better?! BallPlayer
Both are great bats. Composite barrel bats generally outperform alloy barrel bats.
Tony
Can my 8 yr old use this bat. He plays USSSA travel ball. Bill
If he is allowed to use the big barrel bats, this does have the USSSA 1.15 BPF stamp on it.
Linda
does this bat or lithium have more pop. batlover
Both have quite a bit of pop, one does not stand out more than another
Sean
Is this bat better than the easton S3? Trying to decide between the 2. Bill
If your league allows the 2 3/4" barrel, and your player is on the small side, the Vertex is great. But if he can handle the -10, I would go with the S3.
Linda
My son plays in USSSA 13U league and I'm confused on whats legal this year. Does he have to use a -3 bat in 2012 in USSSA? I've looked at the rules and I'm still confused on a bat that is legal in 2012. Thank you for your help. Jett
Totally understandable, it had us confused too. But the rules given to us are...13&u and 15&u their bats must be stamped EITHER USSSA 1.15 BPF OR BBCOR. Which is nice because it doesn't force younger, smaller players to swing the -3, but allowed bigger, stronger guys to use a -3.
Linda
dont know whether to get lithium or vertex which one would u prefer. batlover
I personally, like the Vertex, like the stiffer flex and the nice pop.
Linda
Is this a BBCOR approved bat? DEF
No. BBCOR bats will be -3 Adult bats only.
KG
Does this bat need to be broken in like other composite bats? If so, what is the recommended way to do so...I've heard so many different ways, but looking for the best way. Thanks. Dad of 11U kid
It shouldn't require too much of a break in. But as a rule of thumb, I always recommend getting some batting practice in with it, before putting it into a game situation. Just so you can determine how much it does need to be broken in. Also, another suggestion, never use composite bats at batting cages that use the yellow dimpled, compressed rubber balls. Though they are rubber, they are horrible on composite bats. Only use real baseballs.
Linda
Why is this bat a -9.5 rather than a -10? Is a notable difference? And lastly, how does this compare to similar bats like the voodoo and s2. baseball_lover
Louisville Slugger didn't make the Vertex in a -10 this year. The Vertex, Voodoo, and the S2 are three of the best two piece bats on the market. The player shouldn't feel a huge difference between the -10 and -9.5.
K.B.
how would you compare this bat to the S3 from easton, weighting, pop etc. griz
It is going to be very similar in weighting, the Vertex will have slightly more pop than the S3
Jon
Is this bat legal for USSSA 8u machine pitch 2012? thanks wayen
Yes. It is legal in USSSA for 2012.
Kara
My son is 8 and will be nine in june. He plays coach pitch and this year our distric is moving out of dixie league into ponie. We are now aloud to use big barrel bats. my ? Is is the vertex legal in this league or for coach pitch. Jimmy
Yes, the TPX Vertex is going to be USSSA approved and come with the B.P.F. 1.15. I would check with your league to make sure you guys follow USSSA sanctions
Ryan
my grandson plays on a 9u travel team. he is a big powerhitting kid. He played up with the 9u team that went to Elite 32 in Disneyworld and swung an Easton Surge 28/18 senior league. I was looking at Louisville slugger Vertex. Any other suggestions for strong powerhitting kid? bigfish11
The Vertex is going to be a great bat for him, another bat to take a look at would be the TPX Exo Grid 2. Power hitters tend to like a stiffer bat. This bat is going to be a very stiff one-piece alloy.
Ryan
Witch bat has a longer sweet spot out of these 2 3/4 bats the Vertex or the S3 and witch bat would you recommend for a 12yr 5ft 3in tall contact hitter? Vortexs
They are both going to have very similar size sweetspots. For a contact hitter I would suggest the S3
Ryan
Is this bat USSSA legal under the new rules? Steve
This bat does have the USSSA stamp and is legal for use in 2012.
Jennifer
I have an 8 year old lefty... he has that natural no effort lefty swing... he was using the prodigy 27/17 2 3/4 and he loved it but it was not durable.. he now has the vexxum in 28/18 2 5/8.. looking to go back to a 27 inch til he gets a little more size to him.. although he is small he hits for power... i have 2 questions:#1 the vertex or the 2 3/4 S3 ?? #2 What do you feel is better a 2 3/4 barrel or 2 5/8.. for durability and performance? Surreal
The Vertex and the S3 will be very durable bats. These bats have great pop, a large sweet spot, and a balanced feel. If your league will let you use 2 3/4" barrels then go ahead and get that size.
KG
I want to buy this bat for my 10yr old, but how long can he use it? I see that it says in the description part of the bat that "It's legal for 2012", so this means it might not be able to be use after this year? Thank you. Please let me know before I invest so much money. Hitemen#5
There is really no set predetermined life span for bats. If you are talking about rules and regulations, this bat is legal for use in 2012 and beyond. This bat does feature the new USSSA stamp making it legal for use after 2012.
Jennifer
Please compare this bat to the S3 Easton for an 11 year old? Pon
The S3 is an all alloy bat. The Vertex has an alloy barrel and composite handle. The S3 will have a slightly lighter swing weight than the Vertex. Both do a good job of reducing vibration and both are stiff bats. Both are some of the top performing bats on the market with great pop.
Tyler
My 12 year old son has been using a 31" 19oz for Little League. He is about 4'11' 85 lbs. What size bat would you recommend for him for select ball? ABC
Based on his height and weight we recommend a 31" 21.5 oz bat.
Kara
Is this bat balanced or end loaded? Mike
The weight in the 2012 Louisville Slugger TPX Vertex is evenly distributed. This even distribution gives the bat a balanced feel.
Jennifer
My son is 10, 4'6" tall 65lbs. plays select ,currently uses the Z1000 29/17. Do you recommend the 28" or 29" for him. Matt
Based on your son's height and weight, I would recommend going with a 29 inch bat. If you need more help in trying to find the right size of bat for your son, feel free to use our bat coach feature located on our website.
Jennifer
Hi, I just ordered this bat for my son in a 29/19.5. He is playing 9U Select and is 59 lbs 4'6" tall. He has been swinging a 28/18 Easton Cyclone (2 1/4) bat comfortably, but not getting the pop on the ball. Will the 1.5 ounces be too much of a transition right away? ML
Moving up an ounce is recommended from year to year. This helps make the player stronger and gives them a little more power due to the added weight behind the ball. The more practice he has, the quicker he will become comfortable with the added weight. We do not think moving up 1.5oz is too much of a transition.
Kris
My son plays USSSA, you say this bat is legal for 2012, but what about 2013? mombuyingbat
The SL12VXL has the new USSSA stamp. It will be legal in 2012, 2013 and beyond.
Tyler
My son is 11 years old, 55 inches and 71 pounds, he is using a Demarini Voodoo 30 inch 17 ounces for Little League and travel ball. We are looking at the Vertex Senior League -9.5 for travel ball and am not sure if he needs a 28 or 29 inch bat. He is a contact hitter (righty) with most hits to center or right. Cole
I would suggest only moving him up an ounce and a half in weight. Meaning the 28" 18.5oz. It's hard to suggest making him go down 2inch in length to make up for the weight ratio.
John
My son has the 2012 TPX Vertex, and it has a flat spot and we are returning it, but they can't replace it with the same length bat. Sold out. His bat is a 30 / 20.5 and he loves it, what can he get that compares? TheRock
The Easton S2 and Nike MC2 are two similar bats. They are two piece hybrid bats like the Vertex and are available in a size close to that of the Vertex.
Tyler
When is the 2013 Vertex expected to come out? lrod361
We expect to get the 2013 Louisville Slugger TPX Vertex in November of this year.
Derek H.
When will you restock in the 31 in. 21.5 oz? Reed
We will not be restocking the 2012 Louisville Slugger TPX Vertex. This model has been discontinued because the 2013 models will be out soon.

About the Brand

In 1842, J. Frederick Hillerich emigrated with his family from Baden-Baden, Germany to the United States. Eight years before, the 1834 Book of Sports had made its debut as the nation's first publication covering baseball. But when he arrived in Baltimore, J. Frederick Hillerich would never have dreamed of the future impact his family would have on America's favorite pastime.

After a short while, the Hillerichs moved to Louisville, where J. Fred started a woodworking shop in 1856. Two of his sons, Adam and John Andrew "Bud" were born in the United States and would later join their father in his business. By 1864 "J.F. Hillerich, Job Turning" was in operation and filled orders for businesses by custom-turning everything from balusters to bedposts.

The firm thrived, and by 1875 the little woodworking shop employed about 20 people. In 1880 Bud Hillerich, who was an amateur baseball player, became an apprentice in his father's shop. Young Bud made his own baseball bats along with bats for several of his teammates.

The debate over the origins of the first bat continues to generate controversy among baseball enthusiasts, but the younger Hillerich was most certainly involved in getting his father's business involved with what would become the company's signature item. According to company legend, the first bat was turned by Bud for Pete "The Old Gladiator" Browning in 1884. Browning was a star on Louisville's professional American Association team - the Eclipse. On a spring afternoon Bud, then seventeen, witnessed Browning break his favorite bat. Bud offered to make a bat for his hero, and Browning accepted. After the young wood shop apprentice lathed a quality stick from white ash, according to the story, Browning got three hits with it in the next game.

Louisville Slugger gloves are worn by more pitchers in Major League Baseball than any other glove.
