Description

Rawlings has developed the VELO line of bats to help players increase their swing speed, and ultimately their power. If a hitter can't get the barrel of the bat through the zone quickly, mechanics and performance will suffer. That's where the VELO comes in and helps to create MORE POWER AT THE PLATE! This SL151G is cut into a 151 profile from a billet made from dense Maple and ultra-strong Bamboo. Utilizing Bamboo for the bat's handle and middle taper creates 2 times more durability than previous models! And with tough and responsive Maple wood in its barrel, this bat delivers the best wood bat performance possible. The 2 1/2 inch barrel paired with the medium 15/16 inch handle and guaranteed -5 length to weight ratio makes this bat an excellent choice for youth players transitioning to heavier wood bats. Good Bat For Stepping up to a -3 Michael parent

Pros: First I would like to say my son is a smaller 12U player 5' 90 Lbs but strong for his size.My son Loves the finish and feel. Bat has a good balanced swing, it is ever so slightly end loaded. He primarily uses it as training bat for cage work. He doesn't seem to have an issue getting the bat around. We have only used it a couple of times.

Cons: The barrel seems to taper quickly which to me has a smaller sweet spot than his youth model wood bat from Louisville.

Questions and Answers

Have a question about the Rawlings VELO Maple/Bamboo Composite Senior League Wood Baseball Bat: SL151G? Ask our team of experts and they will respond within 24 hours.

Is this considered a wooden bat? Joe
This 2016 Rawlings VELO Maple/Bamboo Composite Senior League Wood Baseball Bat (SL151G) is made with Bamboo and Maple material. It will definitely be considered a wooden baseball bat. However, it is referred to as a composite wood model because the multiple wood materials used on the bat increase the durability of the bat overall.
Ben
Can this bat be used in a wood bat tournament? juan
The 2016 Rawlings VELO Maple/Bamboo Composite Senior League Wood Baseball Bat: SL151G is more than likely not legal to be used in a wood bat tournament. Since it is not a one-piece wood design it would require the BBCOR certification stamp and since this bat is a -5 it does not have the required certification.
Jason
Would this bat be considered legal for Junior League (Ages 12-14) play? Pablo
This 2016 Rawlings VELO Maple/Bamboo Composite Senior League Wood Baseball Bat (SL151G) features a maple outer shell for the barrel (bamboo core for the barrel). It also shows a "1.15 BPF" notation on it (just says "1.15 BPF", no mention of "USSSA 1.15 BPF" rating). Unfortunately, Little League doesn't have an official ruling on this bat. I think a decision on its legality would come down to your individual league.

I would love to know if there is a -5 bat in 33" or 34" available. This one stops at 32". mberger
Unfortunately the 2016 Rawlings VELO Maple/Bamboo Composite Senior League Wood Baseball Bat: SL151G is a youth model bat that was only featured in the sizes of 29-32 inches.
Cameron
While I realize it's a "composite" of woods - is this bat all wood? JP
The 2016 Rawlings VELO Maple/Bamboo Composite Senior League Wood Baseball Bat: SL151G will be constructed from maple and bamboo. This helps give the bat better durability and with a 90 day warranty from Rawlings, if this bat were to break within 90 days of the date of purchase they would replace it for the customer on a one time basis. This bat does not feature any sort of composite reinforced handle like some other "composite" bats.

About the Brand

Rawlings is a major manufacturer of competitive team sports equipment and apparel for baseball, basketball, and football, as well as licensed MLB, NFL, and NCAA retail products. Rawlings is a major supplier to professional, collegiate, interscholastic, and amateur organizations worldwide, including the Official Baseball Supplier to Major League Baseball.

The first real innovation in glove making occurred in 1912 when Rawlings Sporting Goods Company introduced the "Sure Catch" glove, which was "endorsed by leading players all over the country." The Sure Catch was a one-piece glove with sewn-in finger channels and looked better suited for a duck's foot than a man's hand. Catchers' mitts used at the time were large and bulky with a single leather thong passing for a web.

In 1920, Bill Doak, a journeyman pitcher for the St. Louis Cardinals, approached Rawlings with an idea for improving the baseball glove from a mere protective device to a genuine aid in fielding. The "Bill Doak" model was so revolutionary that it stayed in Rawlings' line until 1953. Its key feature was a multi-thong web laced into the first finger and thumb, which created for the first time in baseball's young life, a natural pocket.

In 1925, Rawlings unveiled a three-fingered fielder's glove, and ten years later improved the Bill Doak model with a two-piece leather web. At the same time, the "T" web became a rage for first basemen's mitts. The pocket underwent a pronounced change in 1941 when the Trapper Mitt, also known as the Claw, appeared. The "Deep Well" pocket was so unique that Rawlings quickly patented it. The design was improved in 1950 by adding a leather piece across the top. Another significant creation occurred in 1948 with the three-fingered Playmaker. A five-fingered fielder's model, with all fingers laced together, provided greater pocket control.

The six-fingered Trap-Eze evolved in the 1960's. In more recent years, Rawlings produced the Fastback design, which gives a glove a snugger fit, greater extension, and overall control. The Holdster is a slot through which a finger can be extended for additional protection from impacts on the pocket. Then, there is the Edge-U-Cated Heel with its extended U-shaped lacing and the Pro H Web and much-copied Basket Web.

Some of Rawlings's more recent glove innovations also include the unique Spin-Stopper design which reduces ball spin when the ball hits the glove, and the Cantilever glove design feature that provides a cushioned area between the hand and the glove's palm area. In all, Rawlings has produced and patented more functionally innovative glove features and designs than that of any other glove manufacturer. The result is that the modern baseball glove is much larger, more comfortable, better padded, and made to last far longer than its ancestors. It is not uncommon to see today's Major League players wearing the same Rawlings glove they wore during their college playing days. In fact, Rawlings is the #1 glove in the major leagues. Rawlings maintains about 65 models of baseball and softball mitts and gloves in its line. The prototypes of virtually all of them have been field-tested by professionals before entering a sporting goods dealer's inventory.
