Great bat! Cody Newhart player

Pros: Great pop and don't have to hit the ball perfect for good results. The bat is very light and feels more like a -8 then a -5. Also the bat broke in very quickly. By far best bat I've had.

Hex Luke player

Pros: This bat has a large sweet spot and I cannot complain about the pop. I have broken many bats over my time as a player but this one has not broken after a year of grinding. I do not feel any sting when I mis-hit the ball off of the end or the handle.

Cons: It has a large handle and a large barrel making a feel that was just not right for me. I would not buy another one for this reason alone, but most people prefer large handles and would love this bat.

Pros: bought for my son to use in Cooperstown. 2 Homeruns, 3 doubles, and 3 singles in 12 at bats! My son’s entire team used this bat and loved it! I agree with previous reviews that bat feels a lot lighter than his -3 BBCOR even though its only 2 ounces lighter. Extremely well balanced. Great purchase!

Questions and Answers (25)

Have a question about the Marucci Hex Connect -5 Senior League Baseball Bat: MSBHCY5? Ask our team of experts and they will respond within 24 hours.

Does it have great pop and does it increase your bat speed?
Bman
All early indications are that the 2017 Marucci Hex Connect -5 Senior League Baseball Bat: MSBHCY5 does have good pop. As for increasing one's bat speed, there is not a bat that will do that except going to a lighter bat or physical development on the player's behalf; as one physically gets stronger then they will be able to swing a bat faster.
Cameron
Does this bat flex like a composite or is it stiff like an aluminum barrel?
Russdog16
The 2017 Marucci Hex Connect is a two-piece, fully composite bat. The two-piece design will let the bat flex more during the swing than a one-piece design.
Kyle J.
Is this bat a balanced bat or end loaded? How would you compare to the Combat MAXUM -5?
mark
The 2017 Marucci Hex Connect -5 Senior League Baseball Bat: MSBHCY5 features a balanced swing weight. It is comparable to the MAXUM as well. However, the Hex Connect is a two-piece design and the MAXUM is a one-piece design.
Jason
What does end loaded mean? What makes this bat so good? Is it better than the CAT 7? I make really good contact and good power but not a ton. Does this bat have a lot of pop? Or can you tell me some bats that have the most pop?
BC
(1) An end-loaded bat is one that will have more weight towards the end of the barrel. Essentially, these bats have smaller sweet spots but the ideal hitting area is tuned higher since you have more weight to work with in the sweet spot. (2) What makes the 2017 Marucci Hex Connect -5 Senior League Baseball Bat: MSBHCY5 a popular bat is the two-piece design with a balanced swing weight. This makes the bat much easier to swing and the two-piece design will help reduce vibration from off-centered hits. (3) There is no physical evidence that would show this bat is better than the CAT 7. (4) It is hard to say how much pop this bat has as "pop" is one of personal opinion.
Cameron
My son is moving from little league to a travel ball team. Looking at 2 5/8", -5 marucci. Should I get him a 30" or 31"? He's 5' tall, 90 lbs.
Jon
Based on his current height and weight, I would suggest a 30" 2017 Marucci Hex Connect -5 Senior League Baseball Bat: MSBHCY5.
Logan
Are there specific break-in instructions for this bat?
Goatman
The best way to break in the 2017 Marucci Hex Connect -5 Senior League Baseball Bat: MSBHCY5, or any other composite bat for that matter, would be to hit off a tee or soft toss for roughly 150-250 swings at about 60% max swing rate. After each swing one will need to rotate the barrel a 1/4 turn.
Cameron
My son plays travel ball in Nations and USSSA and is moving to 13U. My understanding is that bat rules are changing Jan 1. Will this bat be legal?
Spartan
The bat rules are changing for AABC, Babe Ruth/Cal Ripken, Dixie, Little League, and Pony. All bats used in those leagues will need the new USA stamp on them. However, USSSA bat rules are not changing so the 2017 Marucci Hex Connect -5 Senior League Baseball Bat: MSBHCY5 will be legal for next year.
Cooper
Which bat would you recommend for a small 14u travel baseball player, the Marucci Hex -5 or the DeMarini Voodoo -5?
Jetter22
Player preference is important in these products. Both are good bats and will perform great. However, the 2017 Marucci Hex Connect -5 Senior League Baseball Bat (MSBHCY5) is a two piece fully composite while the Voodoo is a two piece hybrid. The decision will be based on the design of the bats.
Mick
Do you know what type of grip is on the Hex Connect? Is it a Lizard Skins grip?
Travel Coach
It is a grip made specifically for Marucci bats, it is not lizard skin.
Mick
I'm trying to find a bat to get ready for high school. Is this barrel too big compared to BBCOR high school bats?
Eli
The 2017 Marucci Hex Connect -5 Senior League Baseball Bat: MSBHCY5 features a 2 5/8" barrel diameter, which is the same size as BBCOR bats that are required in high school.
Logan
I have a big 12 year old. He's 5"7" and 180. Would this be a good bat for him?
baseball momma
The 2017 Marucci Hex Connect -5 Senior League Baseball Bat: MSBHCY5, in a 32 inch model, would be a great bat to consider for someone who is 5'7" and 180 pounds. This bat will feature a two-piece composite design with a balanced swing weight. This will allow a player to have great control of the barrel head and generate bat speed.
Cameron
Is this bat balanced or end loaded? I didn't see it in the bat description
southpaw3229
This bat will have a balanced swing weight.
Kyle J.
My 12 yr old is 5'2" and weighs 127 lbs. He will be using a drop -8 Easton Ghost X for Little League. We want a travel bat that will prepare him for the next step (but also show some performance). Is this a good option for him?
dudu
This 2017 Marucci Hex Connect -5 Senior League Baseball Bat (MSBHCY5) will be an extremely high performing USSSA 1.15 bat. Based on your player's height and weight, we would recommend a 31"/26 oz size. As long as the 26 oz size manageable for him, I think that this bat will show good performance and prep him for the BBCOR -3 bats he will have to use in high school.
Ben
How does this bat compare to the Marucci Cat 7 -5 bat?
dudukrd@yahoo.com
The 2017 Marucci Hex Connect -5 Senior League Baseball Bat: MSBHCY5 features a two piece composite design while the 2017 Marucci CAT 7 Senior League Baseball Bat: MSBC75 features a one piece aluminum design.
Carter
How does this bat compare to the DeMarini CF8 bat that was discontinued?
Jdub Williams
The CF8 from DeMarini was a two-piece, all-composite bat with a very balanced swing feel to it. This 2017 Marucci Hex Connect -5 Senior League Baseball Bat (MSBHCY5) is a two-piece, hybrid bat with more of an end-loaded feel. I think both bats are really high performing, but you will need to decide if you like the end-loaded feel on this Hex Connect before buying it.
Ben
My son is 5'9" about 120-125 (14 year old). What size do you recommend?
Jim
Per your son's height and weight, we would recommend getting the 2017 Marucci Hex Connect -5 Senior League Baseball Bat: MSBHCY5 in a 32 inch model.
Cameron
I'm 5´3 about 125-130, what size of bat should I get?
gsdlkjf
Given your specifications, I would generally recommend a 31" size for the 2017 Marucci Hex Connect -5 Senior League Baseball Bat: MSBHCY5.
Tyler
My son is 4'8 about 95 lbs. He used a Combat 31inch 23oz drop 8 this past season. What would you recommend with the Marucci Hex?
Denny
Given your player's specifications, I would recommend the 31" 26oz. model of the 2017 Marucci Hex Connect -5 Senior League Baseball Bat: MSBHCY5. The Hex Connect will not be as balanced as the Combat, but should provide an excellent -5 USSSA bat for your player.
Tyler
I use a drop 10 Easton Beast X 31/21 and sometimes use my COMBAT 30/20. I am 5'4" 110 pounds. So what size should I use?
nathan
Based on your height and weight, we would recommend using a 31 inch bat. Based on the previous sizes of bats you have been using though, you may want to consider getting the 2017 Marucci Hex Connect -5 Senior League Baseball Bat: MSBHCY5 in a 30/25 since you are jumping up a bit in weight.
Cameron
Is this bat legal for 2018 USSSA 14u?
Dave
Yes, this bat carries the 1.15 BPF USSSA certification.
Kyle J.
I have a 13 year old who is 5"7' who is a little over 100 lbs. He needs a -5 but I don"t know how much weight he can swing. Thoughts?
Jrich
The weight that a player is comfortable with will vary from player to player. However, generally speaking I would recommend a 31" (26oz.) option of this 2017 Marucci Hex Connect -5 Senior League Baseball Bat: MSBHCY5.
Tyler
Is this bat a composite or alloy?
Cam
The 2017 Marucci Hex Connect -5 Senior League Baseball Bat: MSBHCY5 is a two-piece all composite bat.
Cameron
I play in the WSBL and I am in 14U. Am I able to use this bat?
JJ
According to the league rules I was able to find online, it seems the Marucci Hex Connect -5 Senior League Baseball Bat: MSBHCY5 would be allowed as it is a USSSA and -5. However, we aways recommend checking with a league official or coach to be sure.
Tori
Does this bat come with a warranty?
Chris Biggers
The Marucci Hex Connect -5 Senior League Baseball Bat: MSBHCY5 does feature a 12-month manufacturer warranty. If the bat becomes defective within the first 12 months from date of purchase, Marucci would handle the warranty process directly.
Daveron
What is the difference between the Marucci Hex Connect -5 and the newer 2019 Marucci Composite?
Mark
Marucci completely redesigned the composite material that they use for the 2019 Marucci Cat 8 -5 Composite, while the Marucci Hex Connect -5 (MSBHCY5) uses their old composite material. Both are excellent bats, but Marucci tried to make improvements with the new material.

Great balance Lane Parent

Pros: I bought this bat for my smallish 13 yr old still getting used to his first season with -5 bats. After looking all over and not being able to find a 29" -5(not wood) - this was what I settled with. 30" 25 -5. This one is by far the most balanced we've found - and has great pop. It feels like a smaller -10 bat, but has the same power as the heavier(feeling) -5 bats he's used. Very happy with it.

Have a question about the Rawlings VELO -5 Senior League Baseball Bat: UT8V5? Ask our team of experts and they will respond within 24 hours.

Good for Babe Ruth league also?
roger
The 2018 Rawlings VELO -5 Senior League Baseball Bat: UT8V5 does not feature USABat or BBCOR certification, so it is not legal for play in Babe Ruth.
Logan
Is this bat certified for little league 60/90?
David
The 2018 Rawlings VELO -5 Senior League Baseball Bat (UT8V5) is legal for junior league, but not senior league. Senior league has to use BBCOR
Mick
What is the difference between the USA -5 VELO, and this one?
ZBOMB
The 2018 Rawlings VELO -5 Senior League Baseball Bat: UT8V5 features the USSSA stamp and is up to USSSA standards of 1.15 BPF. The 2018 Rawlings VELO -5 USA Baseball Bat: US8V5 is up to USA certification. The model you get would depend on what league you are playing in. If your league does not have any rules you would want the USSSA version, as it will have higher performance.
Carter
The grip is too fat for my son. Will it cause any difference in performance if I re-grip to a thinner layer?
T-Bone
No, the performance of the 2018 Rawlings VELO -5 Senior League Baseball Bat: UT8V5 will not change if you re-grip it.
Tori
My son is 57' and 80lbs and is going to be playing 14u in the spring. Is this the lightest swing weight with good pop or is the Cat 8 better?
JP
The 2018 Rawlings VELO -5 Senior League Baseball Bat: UT8V5 and Cat 8 are very similar bats in that they both will be one-piece alloy bats with a balanced swing weight. Given your players specifications, I do not believe you can go wrong with either of these models.
Tyler
The comparison shows the material as "aluminum, half and half" -what does that exactly mean? Our league requires one piece aluminum bats.
Mike
Rawlings states the 2018 Rawlings VELO -5 Senior League Baseball Bat: UT8V5 is a hybrid bat due to the incorporation of composite material to construct the end cap, which is the only portion of the bat that is composite. For all intents and purposes, the 2018 Rawlings VELO -5 Senior League Baseball Bat: UT8V5 is a one piece aluminum bat.
Logan
Is it illegal to have a metal bat in California?
Kevin Ybarra
We have not heard anything about an alloy/composite bat ban in California.

About the Brand

Rawlings is a major manufacturer of competitive team sports equipment and apparel for baseball, basketball, and football, as well as licensed MLB, NFL, and NCAA retail products. Rawlings is a major supplier to professional, collegiate, interscholastic and amateur organizations worldwide, including the Official Baseball Supplier to Major League Baseball.

The first real innovation in glove making occurred in 1912 when Rawlings Sporting Goods Company introduced the "Sure Catch" glove, which was "endorsed by leading players all over the country." The Sure Catch was a one-piece glove with sewn-in finger channels and looked better suited for a duck's foot than a man's hand. Catchers' mitts used at the time were large and bulky with a single leather thong passing for a web.

In 1920, Bill Doak, a journeyman pitcher for the St. Louis Cardinals, approached Rawlings with an idea for improving the baseball glove from a mere protective device to a genuine aid in fielding. The "Bill Doak" model was so revolutionary that it stayed in Rawlings' line until 1953. Its key feature was a multi-thong web laced into the first finger and thumb, which created for the first time in baseball's young life, a natural pocket.

In 1925, Rawlings unveiled a three-fingered fielder's glove, and ten years later improved the Bill Doak model with a two-piece leather web. At the same time, the "T" web became a rage for first basemen's mitts. The pocket underwent a pronounced change in 1941 when the Trapper Mitt, also known as the Claw, appeared. The "Deep Well" pocket was so unique that Rawlings quickly patented it. The design was improved in 1950 by adding a leather piece across the top. Another significant creation occurred in 1948 with the three-fingered Playmaker. A five-fingered fielder's model, with all fingers laced together, provided greater pocket control.

The six-fingered Trap-Eze evolved in the 1960's. In more recent years, Rawlings produced the Fastback design, which gives a glove a snugger fit, greater extension, and overall control. The Holdster is a slot through which a finger can be extended for additional protection from impacts on the pocket. Then, there is the Edge-U-Cated Heel with its extended U-shaped lacing and the Pro H Web and much-copied Basket Web.

Some of Rawlings more recent glove innovations also include the unique Spin-Stopper design which reduces ball spin when the ball hits the glove, and the Cantilever glove design feature that provides a cushioned area between the hand and the glove's palm area. In all, Rawlings has produced and patented more functionally innovative glove features and designs than that of any other glove manufacturer. The result is that the modern baseball glove is much larger, more comfortable, better padded and made to last far longer than its ancestors. It is not uncommon to see today's Major League players wearing the same Rawlings' glove they wore during their college playing days. In fact, Rawlings is the #1 glove in the major leagues. Rawlings maintains about 65 models of baseball and softball mitts and gloves in its line. The prototypes of virtually all of them have been field tested by professionals before entering a sporting goods dealer's inventory.
