Pros:  Is balanced the same as the CF8 (green bat). Not a lot of sting. Seems to have a good sweet spot. Very close to the original Zen but noticeably less pop.

Cons:  Noticeably less pop then the CF8 and the illegal Zen. I contacted demarini and was advised they used a "ceramic sleeve" that was inserted into the barrell. This stiffens up the barrel and restricts the "trampoline effect". We hit about 150 baseballs outside and the bat did seem to heat up the more my 12u travel ball son hit with it. He liked it even though the pop was less. He uses a CF8 during his games and had the illegal Zen as a back up. He wanted the retooled bat so we bought a new one with the voucher money.

Pros:  My son loved the performance. Very easy warranty process.

Cons:  We purchased a new CF8 for the Elite 32 at Disney last July, unfortunately by the end of the tournament the bat was already cracking. We went through DeMarini’s warranty process, and was issued a voucher number for a replacement. In April we ordered a new Re-tooled CF Zen (performance was not as good as the CF8 but still very good) Sadly like the CF8 within a few weeks it cracked. While I understand DeMarini’s warranty policies and I'm thankful for the first replacement, I still feel that a company should stand behind their product especially one that fails within the first few weeks. As a guy that works hard for his money I can no longer afford to spend the kind of money that DeMarini charges for bats that are less durable then their competitors

Pros:  for a brief period, there was decent pop, but soon after it started cracking.

Cons:  no durability. this is the third CF8 in a year. Last years CF8 broke in the cage within two days. once returned, received the illegal CF8 then the retooled one. after 4 tournaments its cracking. my sons buddy had the same experience. appaently these bats are not made for tournament players. ridiculous for the money spent.

Pros:  Great bat with great pop. Not sure on durability yet.

Cons:  Plan on this bat weighing at least 2oz more than advertised. I put my boys on the scale and his 30/20 weighed in at 22.17. Still a nice bat, but really a drop 8. Should have probably went with the next size down.

Pros:  Still has a nice pop and nice feel to it.

Cons:  Bat weighs 3 oz over stated weight. Too heavy for my 9-year-old to swing. Demarini Customer service told me it's because of the ceramic sleeve applied to the inside of the bat.

Pros:  Good pop

Cons:  A lot of money for a throw away bat. I coach a 11U Travel team and we have had 4 Demarini bats break in last 2 months all of the bats were less than 6 months old!! Getting a 2019 with a voucher praying it last a season, if not ill never waste my money again on these products or guide my players parents towards Demarini.

Pros:  This has been a great bat. My son loves the feel and it is driving the ball much better than his COMBAT. I don't allow him to use it below 60 degrees which I think helps with durability on the composite. They get brittle the colder it it. Price was great and we are very satisfied.

We have had this bat about 2 weeks and I am impressed on how its has performed. Pros:  Great composite bat. Has a solid sound and is hot right out of the wrapper. I'm 4'10" and weigh about 85 lbs. Hit a 210' fence using the first tournament. Swung the -8 bat trying to work my way down to a drop -3 before high school. 6th grader now.

How does the 2017 Blue CF Zen -10 compare to the 2017 Green Zen, and the 2018 Orange Zen, in regard to pop that each bat has? I have read reviews that state the 2017 Blue Zen has a lot less pop since being retooled. How do these bats Compare in Pop to the 2017 Marrucci Hex?

Pop is always more one of personal opinion. With the 2017 DeMarini CF Zen USSSA -10 Senior League Baseball Bat: DXCBZR there have been some mentioning of poor performance. Some of that may have to do with the fact people were accustomed to the performance of its predecessor which was recalled due to being too hot. So far, customers do like the feel and performance of the new 2018 DeMarini CF Zen -10 Senior League Baseball Bat: WTDXCBZ. Some slight alterations to the end cap and connection point design give this bat more balance and vibration reduction but hard to say if there is a gap in performance capabilities between this bat and the previous re-tooled model from 2017.

Unfortunately BBCOR bats are only made in -3 length to weight ratio models. The 2017 DeMarini CF Zen USSSA -10 Senior League Baseball Bat: DXCBZR is a -10 length to weight ratio model. The BBCOR version would be the 2017 DeMarini CF Zen BBCOR Baseball Bat: DXCBC.

Need advice! My son is playing 12u, he is 5'6" and weighs 155 pounds and is currently hitting a CAT 7 30/22. Should I stay with CAT 7 and go to a 32/24 or this CF Zen 32/22? Can't decide!

Based of your players height and weight, I would recommend a 31 or 32 inch bat. The 2017 DeMarini CF Zen USSSA -10 Senior League Baseball Bat: DXCBZR might be too light for him as he will be transitioning to BBCOR in the next couple years. I would recommend staying with a -8 drop weight. In that case, I would recommend the 2018 DeMarini CF Zen -8 Senior League Baseball Bat: WTDXCBR.

I guess I don't get the "re-tooled" part of this bat. What has happen to have a bat get a label like "re-tooled"? Is it hotter, was there something not right with the other CF Zen bats? Just wondering about that.

Some CF Zen models (including this -10) were exceeding the performance standards for USSSA once they were broken in, so DeMarini recalled them and released them again in this re-tooled model. The new model now complies with the USSSA 1.15 BPF standard.

Which bat is better: the -10 CF Zen or the -10 DeMarini Voodoo?

For 2017, I would say that the more popular option has been the CF Zen (especially before the re-call on the original model was made). However, we have not received a high amount of reviews on this 2017 DeMarini CF Zen **Re-Tooled** -10 Senior League Baseball Bat (DXCBZR). It is hard to be completely accurate when stacking it up next to the Voodoo which has received good reviews, but not a lot of total reviews. Overall, both the Zens and Voodoo (DXVBZ) have been solid bats. I would feel alright suggesting either bat.

Yes, the 2017 DeMarini CF Zen Re-Tooled -10 Senior League Baseball Bat: DXCBZR does require a break in period. I have a U11 that is 5', 120 lbs and is swinging the -10 Hex Connect and crushing it. I want to get another one and wonder if I should get a -8 at the same 30" or go to 31" -8.

Whether or not to move up in size on the 2017 Marucci Hex Connect -8 Senior League Baseball Bat: MSBHCX8 for your 11U player would ultimately come down to whether you feel your son's bat speed will be negatively impacted by the added weight. Generally, a player of that age would benefit more from a -10 model but if you feel he can handle an additional 2-3 ounces then there is nothing wrong with going that route.

My son plays 10U tournament ball, and he's 4'10" tall, 100 lbs. Does he need a -10 or a -8?

Weight is difficult for us to recommend as their are other factors such as strength, hand placement on the bat, swing efficiency, etc that all affect that. We do recommend swinging the heaviest bat you can while still maintaining good bat speed, as that will provide the best power. I would probably lean towards a -10 model since that is the most common for 10 years old.

Kyle J. Expert

Can this bat be used in cold weather? Is a break in period necessary before using in a game?

There is no hard rule about using bats in cold weather, but we here at JustBats generally recommend about 45-50 degrees as the cutoff to where you would probably want to use a practice bat or secondary bat if you could. This bat is a composite model so it will require a break-in period of about 100-200 swings off a tee or soft toss before game use.

Would this be a good bat for a smaller (4’11”, 90 lb) 13 year old who plays travel/select ball? He is not a power hitter but does hit well. He really wants the VOODOO -10, but we are thinking he needs to start using a -8 since he is only 2 seasons away from high school. He really likes the 2 piece bats as well.

The 2017 Marucci Hex Connect -8 Senior League Baseball Bat: MSBHCX8 in a 30 inch model would be best for your player. This bat is a two-piece fully composite design with a balanced swing weight and would be an excellent bat for a smaller 13 year old. Would certainly recommend a -8 model for a 13 year old as this will help him transition to BBCOR bats that are required in high school (-3 length to weight ratio).

Of the Hex line and the Cat line, which bat generally receives higher marks for balance, power, and durability?

Since the Cat line of bat has been around for more years than the Hex Connect line of bat, I would typically suggest the Cat bats over the Hex Connects. However, the Hex Connect bats have gotten great reviews so far and if you want the -8 length-to-weight ratio combined with a 2 3/4" barrel diameter, I would recommend this 2017 Marucci Hex Connect -8 Senior League Baseball Bat (MSBHCX8) very highly. Both the Cat 7 (-8) and this Hex Connect (-8) are well balanced, have shown decent durability and can create power.

Ben Expert

How will the -8, 2 3/4" version compare to the -10? Should you expect more pop with the heavier bat if you can generate plenty of bat speed? Just trying to decide between the 2 bats and the 2 5/8" CF Zen.

If bat speed is equal, the heavier bat will always produce more power. We always recommend swinging the heaviest bat that you can handle with good bat speed which will allow for best power results. Both the Marucci Hex Connect and the DeMarini CF Zen will be high performing bats.

Will this bat be pretty hot out the wrapper like the Combat Vigor and Maxum? Usually drop 8 is 2 5/8". Why is this one 2 3/4"?

The 2017 Marucci Hex Connect -8 Senior League Baseball Bat: MSBHCX8 features a 2 3/4" barrel to allow players a heavier option, while maintaining the larger barrel diameter. The bat will benefit from a break in period, usually about 150-200 swings off a tee or soft toss, rotating the bat in between swings before hitting off live pitching.

This bat would be legal for the 13-15 year old division and older. Cal Ripken requires 2 1/4" barrel bats, so this would not be legal for that league.
