Pros:  Have not used this bat in a game yet, but have used in practice and 2 tryouts. This bat has way more pop than anything I have used, and I usually use a Mako. Extremely balanced, feels good.

Cons:  None yet

Pros:  This bat is incredible. I started out buying a two piece voodoo and I had a rawlings velo. This bat beat both of them by far. much more evenly distributed and the ball seemed to jump of it with much more velocity.

Cons:  None

Pros:  This bat has a great ping sound and a lot of pop. I had a velo last year and decided to give this bat a try after it outperformed the new velo on a hittrax machine. It's a similar bat but outperforms and out shines the velo cosmetically on every front. I mean look at this gorgeous bat...it's sweeeet!

Cons:  None so far.

Pros:  This bat reminds me of the Rawlings VELO. Super balanced. Very loud. A ton of pop! I love the custom lizard skin grip too. It is super comfy.

Cons:  I'm not usually a fan of white baseball bats because they tend to get dirty but I'll get over it. This bat is awesome! No cons.

Pros:  Balanced Swing Weight, Solid Pop

Cons:  I too have had a Rawlings VELO for the past few seasons but disagree with previous people that have left reviews. I hit the 617 and VELO at a demo and yes, the 617 is balanced, but when it came to 'pop' the VELO was clearly hotter. The ping of the VELO is much more distinct. I ended up purchasing the VELO.

Pros:  This bat is the most balanced bat that I have found for a Drop 3. My Son uses a Drop 5 Omaha and his hands where fast and loved the way he got used to the feel of the bat as he transitioned from the Drop 10. Last Spring he had to use a drop 3 for his middle school and it was hard for him. I searched and the only bat that worked was the Easton S2 Half and Half. Till I saw the SOLO at a Sporting goods Store. I placed the Omaha -3 in the palm of my hand and the bat would fall off barral side. Placed the SOLO the same way and it just stayed put. You can see the difference in the 1st swing when Soft Tossing and He felt the balance with no End Load through his swing. Took him for some live Pitching and he was not Late and hitting to all fields. Some even hit the warning track. Great Bat for Smaller Kids that are not as Strong as others. Great Pop, Great Grip, Must Get Bat.

Cons:  Bats are not ment to be White.

Pros:  Great bat if you're looking to have your bat for a week or less. Overall great pop and it feels really light for a 33 oz

Cons:  I am now the fourth player in my high school program to have the knob break off of this bat. I kind of expected it to happen but not after a week of use.

Pros:  Good bat with great pop. Got this bat from the return of my broken select 716. I really liked this bat and would defently buy it again if it was more durable

Cons:  I got the bat on april 9th. On may 11th, the knob just randomly popped off when i swung in the middle of a game at bat. i was confused and angry about the fault especially since im not able to return it because of the one time one year warranty.

Is this bat USA approved?

The 2017 Adidas Aero Burner BBCOR Baseball Bat: AEROBB-Red will come with BBCOR certification (-3 length to weight ratio) rather than USA certification. Some leagues that require USA certified bats are allowing the use of BBCOR bats for certain age groups. Because of this, I would recommend speaking with a coach or league official to confirm whether BBCOR bats are permitted in your USA league.

The 2017 Louisville Slugger Solo 617 BBCOR Baseball Bat: BBSO6173 is a one-piece all alloy model with a balanced swing weight. This bat is a great option to use for any hitter required to swing a BBCOR model. Based on your height and weight, a 29 or 30 inch model would work best.

I am 14 years old, 5'5" and 120 lbs. I am looking for a one piece bat that will have a ton of pop and give me power and confidence at the plate. Should I get the Solo 617 or the Marucci Cat 7?

Both bats are excellent choices that will perform very well. For 2017 models, both have sold and done well, but I believe the Marucci Cat 7 was one of our top models this year.

I see several reviews where the knob on the end has broken off. Has this flaw been addressed in this model for bats being shipped out now?

Unfortunately, we have not heard if Slugger has done anything about this issue. However, we have heard less complaints about knobs falling off so they may have addressed this.

What size would you recommend? Player is currently 12 years old and 5'5"/105 lbs. He wants to break it in during fall ball and use it in the spring. Then, he will be 13 and likely 5'6"/5'7" and 110-115 lbs. He used a 31" -10 Mako for Little League this past season.

Based on his height and weight, it is suggested that he uses a 31" bat. He can certainly go to a 32" bat if he wants too. Thinking about the future, the weight for a 13 year old is typically a drop 5. Getting adjusted to the drop 5 now will help him jump to the drop 3 in the future when he plays in high school.

The 2017 Louisville Slugger Solo 617 BBCOR Baseball Bat: BBSO6173 is a one-piece alloy bat with a balanced swing weight. This bat, in a 29 or 30 inch model, would be a great option to consider for someone of your height and weight.

I am 5/3 120 pounds and growing should I get a Rawlings VELO or the Solo? Also, what size 31"/28 or a 32"/29?

The ideal size for you based on your height and weight would be a 31"/ 28 oz. The bats are very similar. The 2017 Louisville Slugger Solo 617 BBCOR Baseball Bat (BBSO6173) has a lizard skin grip whereas the Velo has the standard. both are on piece alloy. The main difference is brand. Would a power hitter prefer this, the Prime, or the Omaha?

All of the bats listed are going to feature balanced swing weights. The preference depends on what the player wants. The Omaha is a one peace, all aluminum bat. The Prime is a two piece composite bat. The 2017 Louisville Slugger Solo 617 BBCOR Baseball Bat (BBSO6173) is a one piece, aluminum bat with a composite end-cap. The 2017 Louisville Slugger Solo 617 BBCOR Baseball Bat (BBSO6173) may feel a bit more balanced than the other bats due to the end-cap being composite. ultimately, the decision comes down to the individual preference of the player.

My son is 5'1", 117 lbs and is required to use a BBCOR now. He used a -5, 31" bat last season. What size and bat would you recommend for him?

Based upon your player's height and weight, I would make a general recommendation of a 30" BBCOR bat. However, if your player was fine using the 31"/26 oz size in the past, I think a 31"/28 oz size of a BBCOR should work well too (may require a little bit of an adjustment period). If seeking an alloy bat I would go with the Omaha 517 over the 2017 Louisville Slugger Solo 617 BBCOR Baseball Bat: BBSO6173. This is due to the durability being better with the 517. It is hard to say whether the 2017 Louisville Slugger Solo 617 BBCOR Baseball Bat: BBSO6173 or any other bat from LS will match closely with the former EXOGRID model they were manufacturing. Will the 617 be the bat to replace the 716 from last year all in all? Or will they be making a new 717?

Louisville Slugger essentially ceased production of the 716 which was their hybrid model featuring an alloy barrel and composite handle. The bat that replaced this model was the 2017 Louisville Slugger Solo 617 BBCOR Baseball Bat: BBSO6173 but this bat is more in line with the Omaha as it is a one-piece fully alloy bat with a balanced swing weight. Unfortunately LS did not manufacturer a hybrid design in 2017.

I'm 6'5" 130 pounds and 15 years old. I'm more of a double and triples kid rather than hit for power. Would you recommend this or the 917?

I would recommend the 2017 Louisville Slugger Solo 617 BBCOR Baseball Bat (BBSO6173) if you prefer aluminum bats and the 2017 Louisville Slugger Prime 917 BBCOR Baseball Bat (BBP9173) if you prefer composite and multi piece bats.

I am 5'11" and weigh 165 lbs. What size and weight bat should I get?

We would recommend a 32-33" length of bat for your size. For a BBCOR bat, that means either a 32"/29oz or a 33"/30oz.

My son is 13 years old and this is the first year that he is required to use a drop 3 bat. He is 5 foot 2 inches and 80- 90 pounds. Which bat do you recommend for him?

Based on his height and weight, I would suggest the 2017 Louisville Slugger Solo 617 BBCOR Baseball Bat: BBSO6173 in a 29" 26 oz size.

My one son is 4'10" 90 lb freshman and my other one is 5'7" and 140 lb junior. What sizes would you recommend for them both?

Based on the freshman's height and weight, we suggest a 29" model. Based on the Juniors height and weight, we suggest a 32" model of the 2017 Louisville Slugger Solo 617 BBCOR Baseball Bat: BBSO6173.

I'm 6 feet tall, a power hitter with a lot of line drives. Is this a good bat for me?

The 2017 Louisville Slugger Solo 617 BBCOR Baseball Bat: BBSO6173 is a one-piece alloy bat with a balanced swing weight making it a good fit for both power and line drive type hitters. Early reviews have shown that the pop has been good.

My son is a high school junior, is 5'7" and weighs 155 lbs. Would a 32" in this bat be right for him?

Based on your son's height and weight, getting a 32" or 33" in the 2017 Louisville Slugger Solo 617 BBCOR Baseball Bat: BBSO6173 would be the best lengths to consider; all depend on what the hitter feels more comfortable with.

I'm 5'8" and 120 lbs. I hit for average. Mainly line drives. What is a good BBCOR bat for me?

For someone who is 5'8" and 120 lbs we would recommend getting a 32 inch bat that is balanced since you are more of a contact hitter. The 2017 Louisville Slugger Solo 617 BBCOR Baseball Bat: BBSO6173 is a great option to consider with its balanced swing weight and one-piece alloy design.

I'm 5'0" and 100 lbs. I'm playing middle school baseball. What's a good bat for me?

Based upon your height and weight, I would make a recommendation of getting a smaller BBCOR model of bat (if that is what is required for the middle school league). This 2017 Louisville Slugger Solo 617 BBCOR Baseball Bat (BBSO6173) would be an excellent option of bat to consider since it is very balanced. I would look at the 29"/26 oz or 30"/27 oz size.

I'm 5'11" and 230 lbs. I hit for average with some power. What would be a good bat for me (need a BBCOR)?

Based your height and weight, I would recommend a 33" version of a BBCOR bat. if you prefer a one-piece design with a very balanced swing weight to it, I would recommend getting this 2017 Louisville Slugger Solo 617 BBCOR Baseball Bat (BBSO6173) very highly. It would work for a power or contact hitter.

I am interested in purchasing this bat. I am in 10th grade, 130 lbs and 5'10". I currently swing a 32" but I am wondering if I should purchase a 33" and start getting used to it. Is there a big difference between the 32" and 33"?

Based on your height and weight, a 32 inch bat would be a better option. As you get stronger then a 33 inch bat would be better since you are 5'10". If you wanted to get the 2017 Louisville Slugger Solo 617 BBCOR Baseball Bat: BBSO6173 in a 33 inch then it would be wise to choke up some on the handle.

Which bat is better, this bat or the Rawlings 5150?

It would be tough to say one will perform significantly better than the other, but the 2017 Louisville Slugger Solo 617 BBCOR Baseball Bat: BBSO6173 has a slightly lighter swing weight so you could generate more bat speed with it over the 5150.

Which bat has better exit speed velocity 517 or 617?

The 2017 Louisville Slugger Solo 617 BBCOR Baseball Bat: BBSO6173 and the 2017 Louisville Slugger Omaha 517 have pretty similar exit velocity, but the Solo 617 has the lowest MOI and the fastest swing speed in the Louisville Slugger BBCOR line.

Your son is right at the top end, in terms of size, for a 32" 29oz 2017 Louisville Slugger Solo 617 BBCOR Baseball Bat: BBSO6173. He is just a few pounds from us recommending a 33" 30oz. I would suggest the 33" if you think he may grow some in the next few months before the season starts.

This 2017 Louisville Slugger Solo 617 BBCOR Baseball Bat (BBSO6173) will be extremely balanced in its swing feel, but if that is the feel you prefer and you are a power hitter, then I would recommend it very highly for you.

What's better, the Prime 917 or the Solo 617?

Both the 2017 Louisville Slugger Solo 617 BBCOR Baseball Bat: BBSO6173 and the Prime 917 are great bats to consider. These two bats are considerably different in the respect that the Solo is a one-piece all alloy bat with a balanced swing weight while the Prime 917 is a two-piece fully composite bat with a balanced swing weight. The main advantage of the Prime 917 is the vibration reduction that the two-piece bat offers.

Does it have the ping like a metal bat or the nice crack of the other Louisville Slugger bats that almost sound like wood?

The 2017 Louisville Slugger Solo 617 BBCOR Baseball Bat (BBSO6173) is going to have more of the "ping" sound like a metal bat due to its aluminum construction.

Which bat will be stiffer, the Solo 617, Omaha 517, or DeMarini Voodoo One?

All three of these bats, the 2017 Louisville Slugger Solo 617 BBCOR Baseball Bat: BBSO6173, 2017 Louisville Slugger Omaha 517 BBCOR Baseball Bat: BBO5173, and the 2017 DeMarini Voodoo One BBCOR Baseball Bat: DXVOC are one piece alloy bats with balanced swing weights. Since all of these bats are of one piece construction and will not flex on impact we would rate the stiffness of these bats as similar; if there were any differences between the three it would be too small to quantify a difference.

I just got this bat and I hit with it today, why do I here a little rattle in the barrel? It sounds like a little piece of something is just rattling around in the barrel. What could this be?

The ratting that you hear in the 2017 Louisville Slugger Solo 617 BBCOR Baseball Bat: BBSO6173 (grains of sand or small pebble like sounds typically) is the result of the excess adhesive that is used to seal the end cap to the barrel of the bat. This is an issue that all bat manufacturers experience but it will not affect the performance of the bat (does give the bat a different sound though). When the excess adhesive dries it breaks off after first using the bat and lodges within the barrel.

My son is a contact hitter, not a power hitter. How does the LS 617 compare to the Combat Maxum BBCOR bat and how do they differ other than materials?

This 2017 Louisville Slugger Solo 617 BBCOR Baseball Bat (BBSO6173) will be an all-alloy bat with a composite end-cap. That design makes the bat very balanced. I would say that it is more balanced than the MAXUM. However, the MAXUM will have a longer barrel length to it, which is attractive to a lot of players (and the MAXUM is still decently balanced).

Most of the top-of-the-line bats have many reviews. Why cant I find many reviews of the 617 online?

The reason that not many reviews of this 2017 Louisville Slugger Solo 617 BBCOR Baseball Bat (BBSO6173) can be found online is because the bat was just released this fall of 2016. Once more players get it in their hands to swing this upcoming Winter and Spring of 2017, I think you will be able to find more reviews online.

(1) What exactly does the composite end-cap do? (2) And does the composite end-cap change the sound of the bat hitting a ball?

(1) Since composite material is able to be made a little lighter feeling than alloy material, the composite end-cap will make the 2017 Louisville Slugger Solo 617 BBCOR Baseball Bat (BBSO6173) feel more balanced overall. (2) I am not sure that the composite end-cap makes the ping noise louder in every bat, but I do know that the VELO features a composite end-cap and the ping noise on that bat is very loud.

If I am a contact hitter which would be better the LS Solo 617 or the 2017 Voodoo?

Both the 2017 Solo 617 (BBSO6173) and the 2017 Voodoo (DXVBC) would be good models for a contact hitter, as both models have balanced swing weights.

What bat would have a stiffer feel, the 617 or the 517? Which would have a lighter more balanced weight? My son has loved the Omaha series, but will be playing with a BBCOR for the first time.

The 2017 Louisville Slugger Solo 617 BBCOR Baseball Bat (BBSO6173) will offer a stiffer feel and is more balanced than the 2017 Louisville Slugger Omaha 517 BBCOR Baseball Bat (BBO5173). What will be the performance difference between this bat and the BBCOR 517? Not the model and material difference.

The 2017 Louisville Slugger Solo 617 BBCOR Baseball Bat: BBSO6173 has a slightly lighter swing weight that helps generate a faster swing speed. However, the performance will be about the same as the 2017 Louisville Slugger Omaha 517 BBCOR Baseball Bat: BBO5173.

Does this or the MAKO BEAST swing lighter? Which will be the better bat?

This 2017 Louisville Slugger Solo 617 BBCOR Baseball Bat (BBSO6173) will be the lighter feeling bat due to the composite end-cap on the end of the barrel. That design will make it easier to swing by a player. Both bats being considered are going to be high performing. However, when deciding between one bat or the other, you'll need to decide if you want a light feeling bat and also what design you would prefer to have on the bat (alloy bat w/composite end-cap like this Solo or two-piece, all-composite like the MAKO BEAST).

About Louisville Slugger
Louisville Slugger

Louisville Slugger is the Official Bat of Major League Baseball and the #1 name in baseball since the earliest days of the sport. In many ways, the storied 130+ year history of the Louisville Slugger baseball bat began in the talented hands of 17-year-old John A. "Bud" Hillerich. Back in the 1880s, Bud was working at his father's woodworking shop in Louisville, Kentucky. Legend has it that Bud, a lover of baseball and a player himself, slipped away from work one afternoon in 1884 to watch Louisville's major league team, the Louisville Eclipse. Bud was in the stands as the team's star, P.... read more

Never before seen and new for 2017! The Solo 617 is Louisville Slugger's newest edition to the BBCOR lineup. If this bat doesn't get you excited, we don't know what will. Constructed with the brand new SL Hyper alloy, this one-piece construction delivers a stiff feel for maximum energy transfer on contact with a ball. Where this design differs from the Omaha 517 is at the end. Slugger has invented the Speed Ballistic Composite (SBC) end cap for the absolute lowest MOI and quickest swing speed in their BBCOR line. This end cap reduces excess weight towards the end of the barrel to produce the most balanced baseball bat Louisville Slugger has ever created. More control, more accuracy, and more power are all as a result of the exceptional balance the Solo 617 has to offer.
