Can this bat be used for Little League 12U? And what length is recommended for a 12 yr old 5' 3" tall player?
The 2017 Easton XL3 Senior League Baseball Bat: SL17X38 is a USSSA approved bat, so it is not legal for play in Little League. The Intermediate (50/70), Junior League, and Senior League divisions of Little League baseball require the use of either a new USA certified bat, or a BBCOR certified bat. Based on your players age, I would suggest a 30" length.
Are there any differences in the 2017 model of this bat from the 2016 other than aesthetics?
This 2017 Easton XL3 Senior League Baseball Bat (SL17X38) is the exact same as the 2016 Easton XL3 Senior League Baseball Bat (SL16X38) with the only exception being the cosmetics featured on the 2 bats.
What drop is this bat?
The 2017 Easton XL3 Senior League Baseball Bat: SL17X38 is a -8 model.
Is this bat legal for Senior Play in Little League (i.e. designated at BBCOR?)
For 2018 Senior Division play under Little League rules, this 2017 Easton XL3 Senior League Baseball Bat (SL17X38) will not be permitted for use as it does not have BBCOR certification.
With this bat be legal after the 2018 change takes place?
The 2017 Easton XL3 Senior League Baseball Bat: SL17X38 would only be legal in 2018 in USSSA sanctioned games; primarily travel ball leagues.
Can this bat be used for slow pitch?
No, unfortunately the 2017 Easton XL3 Senior League Baseball Bat: SL17X38 is not approved for slow pitch softball. It can only be used in baseball.
Is there a major difference between the new 2017 XL3 -8 and the 2016 XL3 -8? Are there any dramatic technical advantages? Also, would this XL3 be a good bat for a 5 hole hitter who is 12 years old, 5'9", and 160 lbs?
The 2017 Easton XL3 Senior League Baseball Bat: SL17X38 and the 2016 Easton XL3 Senior League Baseball Bat: SL16X38 have the exact same features aside from the cosmetics. The construction, technology, and material have not changed. The fifth batter in a line up is typically a power hitter. A one-piece, end-loaded model like the 2017 Easton XL3 Senior League Baseball Bat: SL17X38 is a suitable bat for a power hitter. For your height and weight, we recommend a 33" bat length. However, there are not many senior league models that are offered in a 33" length so you will most likely have to use a 32".
