The main difference between these two bats is going to be that the Maxum is going to feature a longer barrel than the Vigor. Other than that they are basically the same.

If not specifically listed in the title of the bat, then you can always find the drop number by subtracting the weight of the bat from the length of the bat. For example, a bat that is 33" long and weighs 30 oz will have a drop of -3 (33-30=3).

The 2017 COMBAT VIGOR -3 BBCOR Baseball Bat: VG2AB103 will not have the USSSA stamp on it as it is BBCOR certified instead. If a player is allowed to use a 2 5/8" barrel diameter then this bat would also be legal as the player would not be gaining an advantage; this is due to the fact that BBCOR bats will be heavier as well as have thicker barrel walls.

The 2017 COMBAT VIGOR -3 BBCOR Baseball Bat (VG2AB103) is pretty much the same as the Maxum in every way except for the barrel length, or "sweet spot". I think it is definitely a good option for you. It is going to be similar in balance to the Rawlings Velo.

Yes, composite bats do require a break-in period before game use to be ready. We recommend 150-200 swings off a tee or with soft toss, rotating the bat to ensure an even break in all around the barrel.

The weight to get is more dependent on what he is currently swinging and how well he can get this weight through the zone. The flex does not provide a performance advantage or disadvantage, but some players prefer one of the feels over the other. (2) This VIGOR will require a break-in period to get to the highest performance level. However, I wouldn't say that the bat will continue to increase in performance after the break-in has been completed. A break-in usually only takes a few days of consistent use.
