Best Bat of 2018 USA IMHO Smith parent

Pros: We have tried all of the top USA 2018 bats and this bat by far is the best choice for power hitters. If your child can not handle the largest and heaviest bats this may not be the best choice for him, but for those that can it is the closest thing to the old bats and a great step in transition to drop 3 BBCOR bats for high school.

Cons: We have none

unsure about weight 12u baseball dude player

Pros: Was unsure of going from $350. brand "E" 32 inch drop 10 To a shorter 30" drop 5. The swing speed has decreased from 74 to 69 but the control, inertia, and pop of this bat more then make up for the speed. The pop is much closer to last year's bat then anything we've tried. Of course going to shorter bat a few balls have been hit off the end with very little vibration. A great bat for stronger kids or 12 and up. Or a great step on the way to bbcor. It does swing very smooth, and can feel the barrel all the way thru finish.

Cons: Not sure about durability but it's a slugger!

Pros: Bat seems durable, and not too shabby for a USA bat.

Cons: Weight balance isn't as nice as the DeMarini. Too much weight at the end of the bat.

Questions and Answers

Have a question about the Louisville Slugger Select 718 -5 USA Baseball Bat: WTLUBS718B5? Ask our team of experts and they will respond within 24 hours.

Is the barrel made of composite or aluminum material? Charlie
This 2018 Louisville Slugger Select 718 -5 USA Baseball Bat (WTLUBS718B5) will feature a barrel that is built of aluminum material.
Ben
I understand that the USA stamp is legal for certain leagues and that a USSSA stamped bat may not be legal. What I am unclear about is if there is a difference in the "pop" of either certification. For instance, would a travel ball kid who plays in tourneys that accept bats with the USSSA certification be putting himself at a disadvantage by choosing a USA stamped bat? Douglas
The 2018 Louisville Slugger Select 718 -5 USA Baseball Bat: WTLUBS718B5 will have lower performance capabilities when compared to the same type of bat in a USSSA model. The reason for this is USA stamped bats have thicker barrel walls and thus the trampoline effect will be less resulting in slower exit velocities off the bat. If a player can use a USSSA model then it would be better to use those types of bats.
Cameron
Does it help to roll a aluminum bat? Hendo
No, rolling an aluminum bat like this 2018 Louisville Slugger Select 718 -5 USA Baseball Bat (WTLUBS718B5) would not improve performance. We would not recommend rolling a composite bat either as it is illegal in most leagues and typically voids that bat's warranty.
Taylor
Is there a break in period on hybrid bats with aluminum barrels such as these, or is it "hot" out of the wrapper? Rob
There is no break in required on bats such as the 2018 Louisville Slugger Select 718 -5 USA Baseball Bat: WTLUBS718B5. Any bat featuring an alloy barrel will be hot out of the wrapper.
Cameron
My son's team is playing in a tournament that requires bats to be BPF 1.15 or BBCOR with a max drop of 5. Would this bat qualify? KC
This 2018 Louisville Slugger Select 718 -5 USA Baseball Bat (WTLUBS718B5) would be allowed per the league rules listed in your question. However, this bat has USA certification. All bats that are USA certified will perform lower than the BPF 1.15 bats (USA rated bats will perform pretty parallel to BBCOR bats). In my opinion, a BBCOR bat would be more attractive than buying one of these USA bats because even though the BBCOR bat performs at a similar level as the USA bat, the BBCOR bat will help prep your player for high school baseball. If you purchased a -5 USA Bat, you would be buying a lesser performing bat (in comparison to the 1.15 rated bats) that your player would not be able to use once he got to high school. My suggestion would be to get a USSSA 1.15 BPF bat in the -5 length-to-weight ratio or a BBCOR -3 bat.
Ben
Is it a big barrel? ldog
The 2018 Louisville Slugger Select 718 -5 USA Baseball Bat: WTLUBS718B5 is a 2 5/8'' barrel. This the middle barrel size.
Tori
In the title it says it is a USA bat, but there is no stamp on the bat. Any comment? pierson Dengah
On the black colored taper of this 2018 Louisville Slugger Select 718 -5 USA Baseball Bat (WTLUBS718B5), there will be a USA Stamp certification present. You can look at the "Images" section of the bat page to see the picture of the "USA" stamp.
Ben
In Minnesota at the beginning of the season some of the games can be kind of cold outside. If the temperature falls below a certain temp, can it damage the bat? JR
The common misconception is that the cold weather effects the bat. What happens when it gets cold is that the baseball actually hardens up and that's what can damage the bat. You will want to limit how many swings you take in the cold weather with the 2018 Louisville Slugger Select 718 -5 USA Baseball Bat: WTLUBS718B5 and all other bats. Try to only use it for live at-bats during those colder games.
Dan
Which bat would have more pop? The 718 select -5 or the Prime 917 BBCOR? My son's travel league requires USSSA stamp -5 or BBCOR and middle school requires BBCOR. He seems to swing BBCOR well but not sure if there will be an advantage with -5 select. pc
The 2018 Louisville Slugger Select 718 -5 USA Baseball Bat: WTLUBS718B5 is approved for leagues like AABC, Babe Ruth, Cal Ripken, Dixie Youth, Little League, & Pony. This bat will feature a BPF similar to the BBCOR BPF of .50. I would consider swinging the 2018 Louisville Slugger Omaha 518 -5 Senior League Baseball Bat: WTLSLO518B5 for travel ball since the BPF on this bat will be much higher resulting in a hotter bat. To summarize; USA Bats are for League Play, Senior League Bats are for Travel Play, and BBCOR Bats are for High School and Collegiate Play.
Dan
My 13 year old son is pretty small for his age and is swinging a 2018 32"/29 oz Maxum BBCOR, and has no problem hitting line drives over the four and six holes but can't quite reach the outfield gaps. Do the new USA bats have the same pop as their BBCOR counterparts? Would this -5 USA bat give him a little more distance than his -3 BBCOR? Terry
The new USA standard was designed to try and bring bats more to the performance of a wood bat, just like BBCOR was intended to do. The pop should be very similar between the two certifications, yes. A -5 bat would provide a little better bat speed due to the lighter weight, but obviously you have less weight at the point of contact. You may see better power if the added bat speed can overcome the loss in weight.
Kyle J.
Is it okay to use this bat in cages with pitching machines throwing yellow dimpled balls? Nilesh
We don't recommend using any bat you intend to use in a game, like the 2018 Louisville Slugger Select 718 -5 USA Baseball Bat: WTLUBS718B5, in cages throwing rubber dimple balls. These type of balls are more dense than regular baseballs, therefore making them more damaging to bats.
Logan
Does this bat need to be “broken in?” If it doesn’t NEED to be, would it still be good to break it in? If so how do you break it in? Tyler
That bat will come hot out of the wrapper and will not need any break in time. If you still wanted to break it in we would recommend against live BP.

About the Brand

In 1842, J. Frederick Hillerich emigrated with his family from Baden-Baden, Germany to the United States. Eight years before, the 1834 Book of Sports had made its debut as the nation's first publication covering baseball. But when he arrived in Baltimore, J. Frederick Hillerich would never have dreamed of the future impact his family would have on America's favorite pastime.

After a short while, the Hillerichs moved to Louisville, where J. Fred started a woodworking shop in 1856. Two of his sons, Adam and John Andrew "Bud" were born in the United States and would later join their father in his business. By 1864 "J.F. Hillerich, Job Turning" was in operation and filled orders for businesses by custom-turning everything from balusters to bedposts.

The firm thrived, and by 1875 the little woodworking shop employed about 20 people. In 1880 Bud Hillerich, who was an amateur baseball player, became an apprentice in his father's shop. Young Bud made his own baseball bats along with bats for several of his teammates.

The debate over the origins of the first bat continues to generate controversy among baseball enthusiasts, but the younger Hillerich was most certainly involved in getting his father's business involved with what would become the company's signature item. According to company legend, the first bat was turned by Bud for Pete "The Old Gladiator" Browning in 1884. Browning was a star on Louisville's professional American Association team - the Eclipse. On a spring afternoon Bud, then seventeen, witnessed Browning break his favorite bat. Bud offered to make a bat for his hero, and Browning accepted. After the young wood shop apprentice lathed a quality stick from white ash, according to the story, Browning got three hits with it in the next game.

Louisville Slugger gloves are worn by more pitchers in Major League Baseball than any other glove.
