Omaha 518 -5 CD374 coach

Pros: This bat is a great transition for a strong youth player who is looking for more solid contact and distance coming from a drop 10 bat. The new version has a lot longer sweet spot than previous versions, making more solid contact further down the barrel. It has excellent balance and little sting. If you have a 12-14 year old who can handle the weight and needs a transition before having to go to a BBCOR bat, this is a great one.

Cons: Weight can be an issue for smaller players This is a contact hitters bat, power hitters will want more endload.

Pros: Tons of pop and great balance. He has only used it for about 10 games, but couldn't be happier. Used to play with the Voodoo Overlord and had no issues. Couldn't keep up with name changes and moved on - thus far a great choice

Cons: None

Questions and Answers

Have a question about the Louisville Slugger Omaha 518 -5 Senior League Baseball Bat: WTLSLO518B5? Ask our team of experts and they will respond within 24 hours.

I am looking for a new bat for my son. He currently has the Louisville Slugger 917 31 inch, drop 8. We are looking for a 32 inch, drop 5. He will be playing U14 travel ball mainly in the state of Michigan. I am being told there are new specifications for senior league big barrel bats for 2018? Vander
As far as travel ball goes, such as USSSA sanctioned tournaments, the bat rules are not changing, so the 2018 Louisville Slugger Omaha 518 -5 Senior League Baseball Bat: WTLSLO518B5 would be a great option for your player. Here is more information on the USABat Standard: http://www.justbats.com/bat-resource-guide/usabat-standard/

How does this bat compare to the Omaha 517? Are there any improvements? Duffer
The 2018 Louisville Slugger Omaha 518 -5 Senior League Baseball Bat: WTLSLO518B5 features a new 6-Star end cap that helps improve the balance compared to previous Omaha models. The cosmetics are the only other difference compared to the Omaha 517.
Jason
Is the Louisville 2018 -5 BBCOR certified? Bigdaddy
No, the 2018 Louisville Slugger Omaha 518 -5 Senior League Baseball Bat (WTLSLO518B5) is not BBCOR certified. The 2018 Louisville Slugger Omaha 518 BBCOR Baseball Bat (WTLBBO518B3) is the BBCOR version of the Omaha series.
Carter
I don't see a USSSA thumbprint on this bat. So this bat can't be used in USSSA games, correct? Jimdela
If you look at the extra images on the bat page for this 2018 Louisville Slugger Omaha 518 -5 Senior League Baseball Bat (WTLSLO518B5), you'll see that one of the pictures of the taper will show an image of the USSSA 1.15 BPF thumbprint stamp. This bat will be allowed for use under USSSA rules.
Ben
Why is this cheaper then the 2017 917? Eli
The 2018 Louisville Slugger Omaha 518 -5 Senior League Baseball Bat: WTLSLO518B5 is a one-piece all alloy model and these bats cost less when compared to a two-piece all composite model like the LS Prime 917. When you considered the costs to produce both bats then it becomes easier to see why even a closeout model like the LS Prime 917 would still hold a higher price tag than the 2018 Louisville Slugger Omaha 518 -5 Senior League Baseball Bat: WTLSLO518B5.
Cameron
Any idea if Louisville Slugger has plans for a release of this same bat with the new USA certification? Chris
From my knowledge, it is not clear, but with such great success with 2018 Louisville Slugger Omaha 518 -5 Senior League Baseball Bat: WTLSLO518B5 I would imagine there would be one.
Max
My son is playing on a 12u travel team and will be transitioning to a 13u team that will require a drop 5 bat. He is right at 5 foot tall and about 115-120 lbs. He is currently swinging an Omaha 516 in a 30 inch drop 10. Would you recommend staying with a 30 inch or going up to a 31 inch? Mustangs
Based on your player's height and weight, I would suggest staying with a 30" in the 2018 Louisville Slugger Omaha 518 -5 Senior League Baseball Bat: WTLSLO518B5.
Logan
I am 5'5" and I weigh 110 pounds, what size bat should I get? Brady
Based on your height and weight, I would suggest a 31" 2018 Louisville Slugger Omaha 518 -5 Senior League Baseball Bat: WTLSLO518B5.
Logan
My son is playing 12u AAU this coming Spring. He is 5'2" 100 lbs. He swung a 31" drop 10 and a 30" drop 8 last year. There wasn't much difference in his swing or his success at the plate. Should he stay with the drop 8 or move to a drop 5? Jeff
Moving your player down from a -8 to the 2018 Louisville Slugger Omaha 518 -5 Senior League Baseball Bat: WTLSLO518B5 would be a decision only you could truly make. Would recommend basing this decision on just how well he could get the -8 model through the zone.
Cameron
Next year I will be playing my last year of Little League and for my club team I will need a -5. Will I be able to use the drop 5 in Little League or just in USSSA 13u games? Basically is this legal with the new Little League bat rules? Number 6
The 2018 Louisville Slugger Omaha 518 -5 Senior League Baseball Bat: WTLSLO518B5 is only legal for USSSA games. The Omaha model, with the USA Baseball stamp of approval, should be released on 12/4, but at this time they are not featuring it in a -5. The -5 USA Baseball model from LS will be the Select 718.
Cameron
My son is moving up to 13U USSSA. He is currently swinging a 2017 Voodoo balance in 31/21. How will the performance of the 518 -5 compare to the Voodoo he is using now? He has the power to get the -5 thru the zone so I'm not worried about the weight. Or what would be a good bat in a -5 to look into? Love the power of the Zen but it cracks too fast for an expensive bat. So the 518 or the Easton Ghost are my top 2 contenders as of now. Any recommendations? My son is 5'5" and 130 lbs. bill
The other bats probably cracked because your player is too strong for it. Typically a 10 year old will use a drop 10. With that being said, all the drop 5 bats will hold up much better than the drop 10 you are currently using. The 2018 Louisville Slugger Omaha 518 -5 Senior League Baseball Bat (WTLSLO518B5) is is a fantastic one piece balanced alloy bat. It does not require any break in time and comes with the typical lizard skin grip.
Mick
How does this bat compare to the Prime 916? chris
The 2018 Louisville Slugger Omaha 518 -5 Senior League Baseball Bat: WTLSLO518B5 features a one piece aluminum design where as the 2016 Louisville Slugger Prime 916 Senior League Baseball Bat: SLP9165 features a Three-Piece, Composite Design.
Carter
I am looking for a nice bat with a smooth feeling and nice pop. Why should I get this and not the Ghost X? cpound
This 2018 Louisville Slugger Omaha 518 -5 Senior League Baseball Bat (WTLSLO518B5) will feature a one-piece, all-alloy design and a very balanced swing feel. This Omaha design has been very popular for a number of years. As well, these Omaha bats have as much potential for performance as the Ghost X bats, but can be purchased at a much lower cost.
Ben
I have not seen a lot of reviews on this bat yet - but have seen a lot pushing me to think more about the Rawlings Velo, or the Marucci Cat-7. We already have a few of those bats on our team that we could use. How does this compare in terms of pop? Looking specifically for a drop -5 Paul
With the 2018 Louisville Slugger Omaha 518 -5 Senior League Baseball Bat: WTLSLO518B5 being of the same one piece alloy construction with a similar swing weight to the Velo and Cat 7, the performance among the three is very similar as well.
Logan
I am 5'4" tall and 100 pounds. Do you recommend the 30 inch or 31 inch? Jack
We would suggest a 31" length, but a 30" could also work if you feel that would suit you better.
Kyle J.
I need size 34' 29oz. Do you guys have it? mel
Unfortunately, 32" and 27 ounces is the heaviest option Louisville Slugger makes for the 2018 Louisville Slugger Omaha 518 -5 Senior League Baseball Bat: WTLSLO518B5.
Logan
I have a 13 year old that is 5"6' and 125 lbs that is currently swinging a 31/21 Omaha bat. Would you recommend a 31/26 or 32/27? Also for a constant bat speed, is he giving up any pop going from the drop 10 to a drop 5 or are the bats 'dampened' only when changing certifications (USA, BBCOR)? batdad
Based on the player's height and weight, I would recommend getting the 2018 Louisville Slugger Omaha 518 -5 Senior League Baseball Bat: WTLSLO518B5 in a 32''. The actual performance of the bat will not change, however, you may notice a difference in swing speed from just moving to heavier bat. You do notice more of an impact in the performance of the bats when you change certifications.
Tori
Does this bat have a USA baseball certification? Rob
No, the 2018 Louisville Slugger Omaha 518 -5 Senior League Baseball Bat: WTLSLO518B5 features the USSSA 1.15 BPF Certified Stamp.
Carter
I am 5"4' and weigh 103 lbs. I am about to go into 13U travel ball. Should I get the 31/26 or the 32/27? moleman
Based on your height and weight, I would suggest a the 31/26 2018 Louisville Slugger Omaha 518 -5 Senior League Baseball Bat: WTLSLO518B5.
Logan
Is the barrel of this bat 2 and 5/8"? Mike
Yes, the 2018 Louisville Slugger Omaha 518 -5 Senior League Baseball Bat: WTLSLO518B5 utilizes a 2 5/8" barrel diameter and will be approved for USSSA play.
Tyler
I am looking for a bat for our son to use this summer. He is playing 13U, is 5'6" and weighs 135 lbs. We are looking for a transition bat before high school ball in the fall when he has to move to -3. What size would you recommend? RANDY
Based on your player's height and weight, I would recommend this 2018 Louisville Slugger Omaha 518 -5 Senior League Baseball Bat (WTLSLO518B5) in a 32"/27 oz size.
Taylor
How many swings, on average, before the Omaha 518 loses its "pop"? Eric
With the 2018 Louisville Slugger Omaha 518 -5 Senior League Baseball Bat: WTLSLO518B5, like most every bat, the amount of hits before it goes dead will vary from bat to bat based on intensity of use. If a bat is being used a higher rate of collision you can expect the lifespan to dwindle quicker than the same bat used under less harsh conditions.
Tyler
Is this bat sold out or discontinued altogether? Any possible way to obtain one? Chris
Unfortunately, the Louisville Slugger Omaha 518 -5 Senior League Baseball Bat: WTLSLO518B5 is no longer made by LS and we have sold out of all remaining inventory. To find this bat at this juncture, one would need to search 3rd party sellers to find a used model.

About the Brand

In 1842, J. Frederick Hillerich emigrated with his family from Baden-Baden, Germany to the United States. Eight years before, the 1834 Book of Sports had made its debut as the nation's first publication covering baseball. But when he arrived in Baltimore, J. Frederick Hillerich would never have dreamed of the future impact his family would have on America's favorite pastime.

After a short while, the Hillerichs moved to Louisville, where J. Fred started a woodworking shop in 1856. Two of his sons, Adam and John Andrew "Bud" were born in the United States and would later join their father in his business. By 1864 "J.F. Hillerich, Job Turning" was in operation and filled orders for businesses by custom-turning everything from balusters to bedposts.

The firm thrived, and by 1875 the little woodworking shop employed about 20 people. In 1880 Bud Hillerich, who was an amateur baseball player, became an apprentice in his father's shop. Young Bud made his own baseball bats along with bats for several of his teammates.

The debate over the origins of the first bat continues to generate controversy among baseball enthusiasts, but the younger Hillerich was most certainly involved in getting his father's business involved with what would become the company's signature item. According to company legend, the first bat was turned by Bud for Pete "The Old Gladiator" Browning in 1884. Browning was a star on Louisville's professional American Association team - the Eclipse. On a spring afternoon Bud, then seventeen, witnessed Browning break his favorite bat. Bud offered to make a bat for his hero, and Browning accepted. After the young wood shop apprentice lathed a quality stick from white ash, according to the story, Browning got three hits with it in the next game.

Louisville Slugger gloves are worn by more pitchers in Major League Baseball than any other glove.
