Swiss Army Knife of Bats Tyler Dickey coach

Pros: Great value and quality. Heavy due to 125 design, but great sweet spot. Awesome for practice, training, game, or back yard fun. Cheap enough to buy multiple or replace on most budgets. 125 resembles (loosely) more of a Easton XL shape and 271 more of a Easton Speed/Redline shape if that helps those new to wood bats. Used by strong 11 year old who hits for power as practice bat. No problems or durability concerns after month+ of intense use. Finish is ok, and paired with green / black grip from lizard brand you have a $30 practice bat that looks good enough for game time!

Great Bat Jay W parent

Pros: Helps the little hitter "feel" the sweet spot. When he uses the aluminum bats, it feels like he's cheating. Great training tool.

Cons: If it gets wet...it's over. Also, it can break.

Durable but Heavy Jon parent

Pros: Inexpensive, good BP bat to build strength, no issues with durability after a few months of use, love the sound of wood.

Cons: Very heavy as our 31-inch bat weighed in at over 28 ounces with just a lizard skin added on to it. So ours was -3, definitely not in the -5 to -7 range. Very disappointing as this made it virtually unusable for our wood bat league for 10-11 year olds.

Great practice bat TK coach

Pros: I bought this for my nine-year-old and six-year-old to use during hitting lessons and cage work. They put a lizard skin grip on it and they absolutely love the way that it feels when they connect with the ball. This bat weighs about 22 ounces Compared to their 18 ounce DeMarini. I would recommend this bat to anyone who hits 2 to 3 times a week. Compared to their 18 ounce DeMarini. I would recommend this bat to anyone who hits 2 to 3 times a week.

Great Value/Practice Bat JAcoach Coach

Pros: Price for value. Decent finish. We added a lizard skin to this bat and my son uses it for tee practice in our garage. The heavier weight forces him to keep his hands back which what I hoped for. For @$34 all in with the bat grip, I couldn't be happier with this purchase.

Cons: None.

There is no right or wrong material to use with regards to a wood bat and a player that is 11 years old. The 2018 Louisville Slugger Genuine Maple Wood Youth Baseball Bat: WTLWYM125A16 will swing heavier most likely, as this is a maple bat, compared to an ash counterpart; ash is a lower density wood.
Cameron

Do these bats have the USA baseball stamp that some youth leagues require? Kurt

Tori
Can I use this in high school baseball? Rob Freeman
This 2018 Louisville Slugger Genuine Maple Wood Youth Baseball Bat (WTLWYM125A16) is constructed of a single-piece of maple wood. By NFHS rules, wood bats that are comprised of one wood type (not bamboo or composite) are NOT required to be BBCOR certified. By that statement, the bat might be allowed for use in high school play. However, this bat features an approximate length-to-weight ratio of -5 to -7 (much lighter than BBCOR -3 certification). I am a little nervous that if you tried to use it in a high school game, it would be too fragile to handle the velocities of the pitches being thrown.
Ben
On adult maple bats, there is the dot so the batter knows which side to hit the ball on. It doesn't appear this bat has that, correct? Shawn
The black ink dot you sometimes see on wood bats is more to indicate the straightness, quality and direction of the grain, more so than the specific side to hit the bat on. This bat does not have the ink dot, that is correct. Generally speaking, label up or label down at point of contact is the best way to swing a wood model.
Kyle J.
Is this bat a two-piece? James
No, the Louisville Slugger Genuine Maple Wood Youth (WTLWYM125A16) is a one-piece, wooden bat made of maple wood.

About the Brand

In 1842, J. Frederick Hillerich emigrated with his family from Baden-Baden, Germany to the United States. Eight years before, the 1834 Book of Sports had made its debut as the nation's first publication covering baseball. But when he arrived in Baltimore, J. Frederick Hillerich would never have dreamed of the future impact his family would have on America's favorite pastime.

After a short while, the Hillerichs moved to Louisville, where J. Fred started a woodworking shop in 1856. Two of his sons, Adam and John Andrew "Bud" were born in the United States and would later join their father in his business. By 1864 "J.F. Hillerich, Job Turning" was in operation and filled orders for businesses by custom-turning everything from balusters to bedposts.

The firm thrived, and by 1875 the little woodworking shop employed about 20 people. In 1880 Bud Hillerich, who was an amateur baseball player, became an apprentice in his father's shop. Young Bud made his own baseball bats along with bats for several of his teammates.

The debate over the origins of the first bat continues to generate controversy among baseball enthusiasts, but the younger Hillerich was most certainly involved in getting his father's business involved with what would become the company's signature item. According to company legend, the first bat was turned by Bud for Pete "The Old Gladiator" Browning in 1884. Browning was a star on Louisville's professional American Association team - the Eclipse. On a spring afternoon Bud, then seventeen, witnessed Browning break his favorite bat. Bud offered to make a bat for his hero, and Browning accepted. After the young wood shop apprentice lathed a quality stick from white ash, according to the story, Browning got three hits with it in the next game.

Louisville Slugger gloves are worn by more pitchers in Major League Baseball than any other glove.
