Great Bat!!! DAD parent

Pros: 13 y/o crushes with this bat. He doesnt complain about any sting at all. It seems like the ball jumps off the bat even more than the cat7.

Cons: I wish the bat came standard with a lizard skin grip. After a few weeks of use the grip seems to lose some of its tackiness (durability). But it is easy enough to change grip.

Great Bat! James Parent

Pros: My smallish 12 year old is using the -5 to prepare for middle school in the Spring when he has to go to BBCOR. The bat is so well balanced that it feels and swings much lighter than it is. The pop is very good as well and you can tell by the sound if he has hit it on the sweet spot. No idea on durability yet as he has only hit about 100 pitches and taken 100 swings off the tee but it seems to be solid so far.

Good for youths facing 50-70 mph Jackson Griffith Player

Pros: Very good pop on the bat and is very durable. I broke it in during practices and now I hit nukes.

Cons: Wear gloves because otherwise there will be some sting. Also has a fairly small barrel, so just barrel it up.

How can this bat be legal? Wyatt Collins Parent

Pros: My son is a 5’5 132 pound shortstop/pitcher. He is on a competitive travel team. He has been batting in the 9 position until he wrapped his hands on this bat. He has quickly moved up to “cleanup hitter”. It is amazing how hard the ball is coming off this bat, but most of the power is probably coming from his dedication in the weight room this winter. He max benches 120 pounds by the way. I feel for the pitchers who have to face kids with this bat in there hands.

Cons: Every kid on the team wants to use it. I might buy another for the team so people won’t wear down the pop on my sons bat.

Great bat, fair price, Marucci delivers again! OZ Coach

Pros: Hot bat, with very good balance and feel with great pop! Looks good as well! It come with an engraving of his name and custom digital wrap. My son loves this bat. He is playing 14U and must use a drop 5 bat. The 31/26 Cat 8 with 2"3/4 barrel was perfect. He has been using a Marucci Cat7 drop 10, with a 2" 5/8 barrel up to this point and I did notice the extra distance with the heavier weighted bat at drop 5. I would recommend this bat.

Cons: None so far.

Mariculture Cat8 -5 Zach Parent

Pros: Lots of pop. Well balanced. Bought for my 12 year old son who is extremely strong for his age. Homered in his second at bat of the season.

Cons: Grip took two weeks to wear through. This is the only reason I dropped the durability to 3 stars. If you buy this bat you might as well get a lizard skin with it

Hits better than composite Adam Parent

Pros: Son plays 12U triple A. Started with Easton ghost X 31/23. Broke end cap three times within a month. Got a beast speed 32/22( figured hybrid might last season even though we traded down and lost 100$) Kid wouldn’t use it. Too light he said. Tried the Cat composite on a demo and he broke it. Realized he can’t use composites anymore we bought the Marucci Cat 8 32/27 . He loved it out of the box. Adapted to the added weight and length. Hit well first tournament with it. Second weekend got his first HR with it, along with a triple and a double. No complaints on sting or balance. Good bat

Cons: Grip...but that’s a preference and 11$ fix.

As Advertised Paul Parent

Pros: Marucci makes a great bat right out of the box! My son is playing All-Star baseball this summer and will transition from -10 to -5 for Middleschool. The new CAT8 drop -5 is helping him transition easily and confidently. We are fortunate to have other teammates who have the same bat in drop -8 so if later in a tournament he feels the need to back off the weight, he can swing the same great bat. This is also his first all metal bat which feels close to a composite USABat but with more "pop." We are looking forward to great AtBats, especially as he gets stronger.

Cons: Quite possibly the best bat we have owned since those springy orange Makos.

Questions and Answers

Have a question about the Marucci CAT8 -5 USSSA Baseball Bat: MSBC85? Ask our team of experts and they will respond within 24 hours.

My undersized 12 year old will be transitioning from -7 weight/length ratio to -5 standard for travel league play. His previous bat was 28 inches and my first question is why can't I find a -5 bat at 29 inches as the smallest at that ratio is 30 inches? He will be making a huge jump in bat size given his size so what 30/25 bat model would you recommend as I would think I would want to avoid end loaded models and get him into a more balanced weight distribution? Self
Unfortunately the bat manufacturers, based on their market research, start their -5 models at 30 inches. Your thinking would be correct in that a balanced bat would be more beneficial for your player since he is having to jump up in weight. The Marucci CAT 8 -5 USSSA Baseball Bat: MSBC85 would certainly make a great choice as this bat features a balanced swing weight design.
Cameron
What is the difference between this CAT 8 and the CAT 8 composite? Thinking about how the bat performs for the player, primarily, as well as if there are temperature restrictions unique to one bat and not both. Oklahawg
The Marucci CAT 8 -5 USSSA Baseball Bat: MSBC85 is a one-piece all alloy bat with a balanced swing weight while the Marucci CAT 8 Composite -5 USSSA Baseball Bat: MSBCCP5 is a two-piece all composite bat with a balanced swing weight; both have 2 3/4" barrel diameters. The composite model is best suited for the warmer weather but does not have any restrictions with regards to temperature. As well, since the composite model is made from a two-piece design one would get more flex and vibration control from an off-centered hit.
Cameron
What are the differences between the -5 CAT 7 and CAT 8 bats? Tony6020
The Marucci CAT 8 -5 USSSA Baseball Bat: MSBC85 features a new alloy barrel (AZ105) that gives this bat a lighter feel with thinner barrel walls for a higher trampoline effect when compared to the CAT 7. As well, the AV2 knob has been improved to further reduce vibration from an off-centered hit.
Cameron
Any issues with possibly damaging the bat if it is used with heavy practice baseballs like the Total Control Ball? M.Estrada
There is a good chance one could damage the Marucci CAT 8 -5 USSSA Baseball Bat: MSBC85 is using a heavier ball to hit with like the Total Control Ball. Would recommend using ones non game bat for this type of hitting.
Cameron
What is the difference between the CAT 7 and the CAT 8? Andrea
The Marucci CAT 8 -5 USSSA Baseball Bat: MSBC85 will have the upgraded AZ105 alloy, the strongest aluminum on the Marucci bat line, allows for thinner barrel walls, a higher response rate and better durability.
Max
I've heard that the Cat 6 actually has more pop than the Cat 7 or newer Cat 8. Does anyone have any first hand experience with this? DLed24
No, I do not subscribe to that notion. The Cat 7 and Marucci CAT 8 -5 USSSA Baseball Bat: MSBC85 have been two of our highest reviewed models to date. I do not believe that there has been any performance drop-off. If anything, the performance has increased.
Tyler
I'm 14 years old and have to use -5 bats this year before BBCOR. I'm 5’7", around 115 lbs, and am looking to hit for contact but also with loads of power. My narrowed down choices are the Cat 8, Beast Pro, and Ghost X composite (white and grey). What should I choose? tommy rocket
All bats mentioned are great ones to consider. As for the size to get the Marucci CAT 8 -5 USSSA Baseball Bat: MSBC85 in, we would recommend a 31 inch bat per your height and weight.
Cameron
Is this bat okay to use this in a batting cage environment hitting the yellow dimpled machine balls or is there a possibility of damaging it? Brad
We do not recommend using any of your new bats in a cage with the yellow dimple balls, and the Marucci CAT 8 -5 USSSA Baseball Bat: MSBC85 is no exception. Those particular balls are heavier and more dense which can cause noticeable damage to any model.
Tyler
Are the handles tapered with a thicker handle near the knob on all CAT 8's or is that just the grip? Brian P.
Based on the AV2 knob that is used on the Marucci CAT 8 -5 USSSA Baseball Bat: MSBC85 one will notice that the handle is thicker or slightly flared at the base of the handle/knob. This design would be the same on all CAT 8 models.
Cameron
Will this bat be allowed for Babe Ruth? 13-15 years old? debbie
Generally speaking, the Marucci CAT 8 -5 USSSA Baseball Bat: MSBC85 will NOT be approved for Babe Ruth play as it is not USA certified. However, you will want to check with either a coach or league official to verify your league's exact rules.
Tyler
I'm 14 years old and 115 pounds. I need a -5 bat and play in a league with no bat restrictions. I hit leadoff for my team but want to start hitting harder. Is this a quality bat? Calvin Hapeman
The Marucci Cat 8 -5 USSSA (MSBC85) is an excellent choice if you are looking for a high performing model at a very competitive price. The Marucci Cat 7 was one of our best performers and sellers, and Marucci improved upon that model with the new AZ105 alloy.
Kyle J.
Does this bat have a break-in period? Aubrey
The Marucci CAT 8 -5 USSSA Baseball Bat: MSBC85 is an alloy model, so there is no break in period.
Logan
What are the differences in the CAT 8 and the CAT Connect? What type of hitter are they suited for and why? Bill
The Cat 8 is a one-piece, all alloy model, while the Cat 8 Connect is a two-piece, hybrid design with an alloy barrel but a composite handle. The main difference is that the Cat 8 Connect will offer a bit better vibration dampening on mishits than the standard Cat 8 due to the two-piece design. These means the Cat 8 Connect is slightly more tailored to the contact hitter or smaller player who may struggle with vibration, while the Cat 8 is slightly more fitting for a stronger, power hitter. Both bats are well balanced models however, so the difference is not too great.
Kyle J.
Does the Cat 8 -5 come in a 2 5/8 barrel? Jeremy Romero
Sadly, the Marucci CAT 8 -5 USSSA Baseball Bat: MSBC85 is the only (-5) version releasing of the Cat 8 and will only come in a 2 3/4" barrel diameter.
Tyler
What is the best way to break in this bat? Carlos
The Marucci CAT 8 -5 USSSA Baseball Bat: MSBC85 is a one piece alloy bat. Alloy barrels do not require a break in period like composite options do. This bat can be used straight out of the box.
Daveron
Is this bat legal in NSW Australia? Josh
From what I could find, it appears in little league, USA bats are required which means the Marucci CAT 8 -5 USSSA Baseball Bat: MSBC85 would not be legal. I would recommend checking with a coach or official just to confirm.
Tori
I just finished little league and this is my first year in Babe Ruth. Would this bat be legal or would I have to get a USA bat or BBCOR bat? Will Stidsen
This Marucci Cat 8 -5 USSSA (MSBC85) is not legal for Babe Ruth play. You will need a USA or BBCOR stamped model, depending on your age group.
Kyle
Is this bat approved for 13-14 age group Babe Ruth play? Bill
The Marucci CAT 8 -5 USSSA Baseball Bat: MSBC85 would not be legal for Babe Ruth play. As they require the USA or BBCOR stamp. This option is only legal for USSSA, travel tournament baseball. The heavier -3 option of the Marucci CAT 8 BBCOR Baseball Bat: MCBC8 would be allowed for Babe Ruth in ages 13 - 18 years old.
Daveron
I am debating whether to buy this bat or the DeMarini CF Zen in a 32"/27 oz USSSA model for my son. He currently swings 32"/27 oz XL1 Easton but the bat is starting to lose its pop. He’s a big kid who will be 12 years old and I would say an above average hitter so I want the best bat for him as he is a power hitter. The XL1 is gonna be hard to top because it’s absolutely amazing but it’s life is about shot. Hope to hear from you soon. Thanks, Gregg. Gregg Huffine
Both the Marucci Cat 8 -5 and the DeMarini CF Zen -5 will be some of the top performers overall this year in my opinion, so it's hard to really go wrong either way. However, I would lean slightly towards the Marucci Cat 8 -5 as I think that will have a closer feel to the Easton XL1 than the DeMarini Cf Zen -5 will.
Kyle
What is the difference between a Cat 8 and a Cat 8 Connect? Brandon
The Marucci CAT 8 -5 USSSA Baseball Bat: MSBC85 is a one-piece balanced alloy design. The Marucci CAT 8 Connect -5 USSSA Baseball Bat: MSBCC85 is a two-piece hybrid design: alloy barrel with a composite handle. This option is slightly end loaded.
Daveron
Love the site. I know this is a drop 5 meaning a 30 inch bat list weight is 25 ounces. But what's actual weight? BG
The Marucci CAT 8 -5 USSSA Baseball Bat: MSBC85 will feature a weight of roughly the listed weight. We have a 32 inch model in the showroom and it came in at 27 ounces exactly.
Cameron
Since this is an alloy bat, will it break down or "lose its pop" the way a composite eventually does? Or, is that not a concern? Jay G.
Like any bat, the Marucci CAT 8 -5 USSSA Baseball Bat: MSBC85 will eventually break down over time. Unfortunately it is impossible to tell when that may occur, regardless if the bat is alloy or composite.
Cameron
Do these only come in 2 3/4 barrel or can you get it in a 2 5/8 as well? Casey
Unfortunately, the Cat 8 was not offered in 2 5/8" barrel in the -5 option. However, the Marucci CAT 7 Senior League Baseball Bat: MSBC75 does feature a 2 5/8" barrel diameter in limited -5 sizing.
Daveron
If I ordered a 31/26 when would it be here? I would be ordering it on December 24th and I live in Michigan. Me
If placing an order for the Marucci CAT 8 -5 USSSA Baseball Bat: MSBC85 on 12/24 and using the free UPS ground shipping to MI, we would anticipate a delivery between December 30-January 2nd.
Cameron
Does this bat need broken in off a tee? Martin
The Marucci CAT 8 -5 USSSA Baseball Bat: MSBC85 features an alloy barrel. Alloy barrels do not require a break in period. Composite barrel bats need to be broken in before seeing live pitching.
Daveron
Does JustBats install Lizard Grips on bats? Richard
Yes, for an additional fee we could install a Lizard Skin bat grip on the Marucci CAT 8 -5 USSSA Baseball Bat: MSBC85.
Cameron
What will be the biggest difference between the new Cat 9 and last years Cat 8? William
The new Marucci Cat 9 will feature new alloy technology that will provide better feel and forgiveness! There is also an added Longitudinal Groove System (LGS) that will go along the thickest part of the barrel to improve flexibility.
Frank
My 13 yr old is 125 lbs and grew 5 inches since summer. He needs a -5. His current -8 is 31 inches. What length would you suggest for a kid who is 5'10" and growing? Also, he is a contact hitter, would this be a good switch from his Axe bat that he loves? Jamie Martin
The Marucci CAT 8 -5 USSSA Baseball Bat: MSBC85 is an excellent one-piece alloy bat with a balanced swing weight. Per the player's height and weight, we would recommend a 32 inch bat.
Cameron
My son is moving from 12u 51/70 to 13u 60/90 in a couple of weeks which require -7 or heavier bat. He is 5’4", 120 lbs. and currently uses a 31/21. What would be a good size in this bat for him? 30/25? Sunil
Based on your son's height and weight, we would recommend getting the Marucci CAT8 -5 USSSA Baseball Bat: MSBC85 in 30/25. Our chart would put him at 31 inches but, after factoring in the size of his most recent bat, it would be best to scale down to the 30/25.
Cameron
How does this bat compare to the Marucci CAT7 Silver -5 USSSA Baseball Bat: MSBC725S? Jay
Both bats are very similar with the Marucci CAT8 -5 USSSA Baseball Bat: MSBC85 featuring a different alloy barrel.
