Terrible purchase Brad parent

Pros: light weight

Cons: Bat broke on literally first hit. We might as well flushed $30 down the toilet. This is a terrible purchase. The only thing this bat could be used for is hitting wiffle balls.

Great for the price dad/coach coach

Pros: Great wood bat. Well balanced and good pop. My 7 year old played in his first wood bat tournament and he had several hits deep into the outfield. This bat was better than any of the USA bats he used during his all star season. and for the price I couldnt be happier.

Cons: No grip. We added lizard skin to this bat and made it perfect.

Flylite Bat Sam Carter Coach

Pros: The bat has a nice feel when swinging

Cons: After the first use the ball left indention marks on the bat and is already showing signs of fatigue. That bat is giving way to cracks.

Do not buy! Paul Coach

Pros: None

Cons: I bought this bat for my son for Christmas to use this winter in the batting cage. Literally the 10th hit and the bat split from the barrel down thru the handle. Don't waste your time with this bat!

Not durable Christopher Parent

Pros: Light weight feel, good pop.

Cons: My son is a 75 pound 11 year old. He hit maybe 75 balls off the tee the first night he had this bat. After he was done, I noticed the barrel was dented in many spots from the laces on the baseball. I would recommend you don't buy this bat.

Decent bat for the money Jerod Howell Coach

Pros: Light weight and durable so far. We put a new grip on it and my son likes it a lot.

Cons: Disappointed in the finish. The Louisville Slugger logo is just a sticker and ours has air bubbles and ripples in it.

Very Light Bat Bart Parent

Pros: Lightweight, good balance, good sound when hitting.

Cons: None yet. Other reviews have said this bat breaks easily, but with a wood this light, that is to be expected. You can't have everything. If you want a strong bat, get ash or maple. If you want a light bat, get poplar.

Questions and Answers

Have a question about the Louisville Slugger Flylite Y243 Poplar Wood Youth Baseball Bat: WTLWYS243A18? Ask our team of experts and they will respond within 24 hours.

Is it marked USA certified? Joe
None of the youth model wood bats will have a USA stamp. However, assuming they are a one-piece wood model like the Louisville Slugger Flylite Wood Y243 Youth Baseball Bat: WTLWYS243A18, they will be approved for all USA play.
Tyler
Is this bat under 19 ounces? My son's coach said I need one that is. Stacy
The Louisville Slugger Flylite Wood Y243 Youth Baseball Bat: WTLWYS243A18, if going with either a 28 or 29 inch model, will likely be at 19 ounces or less. Unfortunately LS does indicate that the wood billets used to make these models can run +/- 2 ounces so it could run more than the 19 ounces you are seeking.
Cameron
Is this bat worth trying for an 11 year old? He is 4'8” around 70 lbs and is eager to try it during fall ball. He plays little league at the majors and is an all star with good speed but not a lot of power. Jimmy Grammas
For a youth player this Louisville Slugger Flylite Wood Y243 is an excellent option, as it is lighter than almost any other wood bat on the market.

About the Brand

In 1842, J. Frederick Hillerich emigrated with his family from Baden-Baden, Germany to the United States. Eight years before, the 1834 Book of Sports had made its debut as the nation's first publication covering baseball. But when he arrived in Baltimore, J. Frederick Hillerich would never have dreamed of the future impact his family would have on America's favorite pastime.

After a short while, the Hillerichs moved to Louisville, where J. Fred started a woodworking shop in 1856. Two of his sons, Adam and John Andrew "Bud" were born in the United States and would later join their father in his business. By 1864 "J.F. Hillerich, Job Turning" was in operation and filled orders for businesses by custom-turning everything from balusters to bedposts.

The firm thrived, and by 1875 the little woodworking shop employed about 20 people. In 1880 Bud Hillerich, who was an amateur baseball player, became an apprentice in his father's shop. Young Bud made his own baseball bats along with bats for several of his teammates.

The debate over the origins of the first bat continues to generate controversy among baseball enthusiasts, but the younger Hillerich was most certainly involved in getting his father's business involved with what would become the company's signature item. According to company legend, the first bat was turned by Bud for Pete "The Old Gladiator" Browning in 1884. Browning was a star on Louisville's professional American Association team - the Eclipse. On a spring afternoon Bud, then seventeen, witnessed Browning break his favorite bat. Bud offered to make a bat for his hero, and Browning accepted. After the young wood shop apprentice lathed a quality stick from white ash, according to the story, Browning got three hits with it in the next game.

Louisville Slugger gloves are worn by more pitchers in Major League Baseball than any other glove.
