Rawlings Velo -5 Joe H. player

Pros: a bat rep held a demo at our local little league complex. he brought Rawlings, Demarini, Easton. Prior to the demo, I had already settled on a new Ghost X -10 for my 11 yr old who will be 12 in 2018 LL season. He hit with all of them, he preferred the Rawlings Velo -5. Most everyone in our area is all Easton. We have had 5 different Mako's and loved them all but he said the Rawlings felt the best, so that's what I got. As far as lack of pop, he was still able to drive the ball 200 ft, same as he could with the Easton 32/20 mako that he has now. This bat makes a huge "ping". Reminds you of the good old days before composites.

Cons: None so far, bat was demo'd only.

Questions and Answers

Have a question about the Rawlings VELO -5 USA Baseball Bat: US8V5? Ask our team of experts and they will respond within 24 hours.

I've seen the word "Hybrid" associated with some of the new USA bats like this VELO -5. Does having a composite end cap make it a Hybrid or is there composite somewhere in the barrel? ACRod
The 2018 Rawlings VELO -5 USA Baseball Bat: US8V5 is considered a "hybrid bat" due to the composite end cap. The rest of the bat, including the barrel, is made from alloy.

If your son was 12 yrs old, 5'5'', 160lbs, solid, strong and quick hands, like my son. Would you buy your son this Rawlings Velo -5 or the Slugger 718 -5? houstonastrosfan1970
Both are great bats. If your son like end loaded bats, the Slugger Select 718 is perfect for him. It is slightly end loaded with a three piece design to allow for sting reduction. If he prefers balanced, the 2018 Rawlings VELO -5 USA Baseball Bat (US8V5) would be the bat for him. The Velo is a hybrid as well, and will have nice sting reduction, but not as much as the Select 718.

My son is 5'8" 160lbs 13 years old. He is in Babe ruth and must have a USA stamped bat or BBCOR.50. I was looking at this bat or was wondering if another would be a better fit. He has excellent hand/eye coordination and was wondering what length/weight would be good for him. my sons nickname is "PeanutButter"
Based on your sons height and weight the 2018 Rawlings VELO -5 USA Baseball Bat: US8V5 in the 32"/27 ounce size would be a great option for him.
Carter
My son is turning 13yo in May. He will be playing up in Juniors this year but playing on a U12 tournament team. He's about 5' and 105lbs. Last year he used an Easton 31" -13 in league games but used a 31" -11 2 5/8 in tournaments. He tried out a -8 Ghost in the cages and seemed fine at that weight but the -5 seemed ok too. Is trying the Velo -5 unreasonable at his size? I was trying to move up in weight in anticipation of high school ball. Dan
It is definitely going to be a big jump from a -11 but soon he will be using BBCOR bats and have to make the jump so I think that it is a good idea to get a start on that now. Based on his height and weight we would recommend a 30"/25 ounce 2018 Rawlings VELO -5 USA Baseball Bat: US8V5.
Carter
What is different between the Rawlings VELO and Rawlings 5150? JW
The main difference is the Comp-Lite end cap that improves the balance of the bat for better swing speed.

About the Brand

Rawlings is a major manufacturer of competitive team sports equipment and apparel for baseball, basketball, and football, as well as licensed MLB, NFL, and NCAA retail products. Rawlings is a major supplier to professional, collegiate, interscholastic, and amateur organizations worldwide, including the Official Baseball Supplier to Major League Baseball.

The first real innovation in glove making occurred in 1912 when Rawlings Sporting Goods Company introduced the "Sure Catch" glove, which was "endorsed by leading players all over the country." The Sure Catch was a one-piece glove with sewn-in finger channels and looked better suited for a duck's foot than a man's hand. Catchers' mitts used at the time were large and bulky with a single leather thong passing for a web.

In 1920, Bill Doak, a journeyman pitcher for the St. Louis Cardinals, approached Rawlings with an idea for improving the baseball glove from a mere protective device to a genuine aid in fielding. The "Bill Doak" model was so revolutionary that it stayed in Rawlings' line until 1953. Its key feature was a multi-thong web laced into the first finger and thumb, which created for the first time in baseball's young life, a natural pocket.

In 1925, Rawlings unveiled a three-fingered fielder's glove, and ten years later improved the Bill Doak model with a two-piece leather web. At the same time, the "T" web became a rage for first basemen's mitts. The pocket underwent a pronounced change in 1941 when the Trapper Mitt, also known as the Claw, appeared. The "Deep Well" pocket was so unique that Rawlings quickly patented it. The design was improved in 1950 by adding a leather piece across the top. Another significant creation occurred in 1948 with the three-fingered Playmaker. A five-fingered fielder's model, with all fingers laced together, provided greater pocket control.

The six-fingered Trap-Eze evolved in the 1960's. In more recent years, Rawlings produced the Fastback design, which gives a glove a snugger fit, greater extension, and overall control. The Holdster is a slot through which a finger can be extended for additional protection from impacts on the pocket. Then, there is the Edge-U-Cated Heel with its extended U-shaped lacing and the Pro H Web and much-copied Basket Web.

Some of Rawlings's more recent glove innovations also include the unique Spin-Stopper design which reduces ball spin when the ball hits the glove, and the Cantilever glove design feature that provides a cushioned area between the hand and the glove's palm area. In all, Rawlings has produced and patented more functionally innovative glove features and designs than that of any other glove manufacturer. The result is that the modern baseball glove is much larger, more comfortable, better padded, and made to last far longer than its ancestors. It is not uncommon to see today's Major League players wearing the same Rawlings glove they wore during their college playing days. In fact, Rawlings is the #1 glove in the major leagues. Rawlings maintains about 65 models of baseball and softball mitts and gloves in its line. The prototypes of virtually all of them have been field-tested by professionals before entering a sporting goods dealer's inventory.
