This 2017 Louisville Slugger Solo 617 BBCOR Baseball Bat (BBSO6173) will be the lighter feeling bat due to the composite end-cap on the end of the barrel. That design will make it easier to swing by a player. Both bats being considered are going to be high performing. This 2017 Louisville Slugger Solo 617 BBCOR Baseball Bat (BBSO6173) will be an all-alloy bat with a composite end-cap. That design makes the bat very balanced. I would say that it is more balanced than the MAXUM. However, the MAXUM will have a longer barrel length to it, which is attractive to a lot of players (and the MAXUM is still decently balanced).

The ratting that you hear in the 2017 Louisville Slugger Solo 617 BBCOR Baseball Bat: BBSO6173 (grains of sand or small pebble like sounds typically) is the result of the excess adhesive that is used to seal the end cap to the barrel of the bat. This is an issue that all bat manufacturers experience but it will not affect the performance of the bat (does give the bat a different sound though). When the excess adhesive dries it breaks off after first using the bat and lodges within the barrel.

The bat that replaced this model was the 2017 Louisville Slugger Solo 617 BBCOR Baseball Bat: BBSO6173 but this bat is more in line with the Omaha as it is a one-piece fully alloy bat with a balanced swing weight. Unfortunately LS did not manufacturer a hybrid design in 2017.

The ideal size for you based on your height and weight would be a 31"/ 28 oz. The bats are very similar. The 2017 Louisville Slugger Solo 617 BBCOR Baseball Bat (BBSO6173) has a lizard skin grip whereas the Velo has the standard. both are on piece alloy. The main difference is brand. Whatever brand you swing currently, if you like it i'd stick with it.

What size would you recommend? Player is currently 12 years old and 5'5"/105 lbs. He wants to break it in during fall ball and use it in the spring. Then, he will be 13 and likely 5'6"/5'7" and 110-115 lbs. He used a 31" -10 Mako for Little League this past season. JR
Based on his height and weight, it is suggested that he uses a 31" bat. He can certainly go to a 32" bat if he wants too. Thinking about the future, the weight for a 13 year old is typically a drop 5. Getting adjusted to the drop 5 now will help him jump to the drop 3 in the future when he plays in high school.

Unfortunately, we have not heard if Slugger has done anything about this issue. However, we have heard less complaints about knobs falling off so they may have addressed this.

Both bats are excellent choices that will perform very well. For 2017 models, both have sold and done well, but I believe the Marucci Cat 7 was one of our top models this year.

About the Brand
In 1842, J. Frederick Hillerich emigrated with his family from Baden-Baden, Germany to the United States. Eight years before, the 1834 Book of Sports had made its debut as the nation's first publication covering baseball. But when he arrived in Baltimore, J. Frederick Hillerich would never have dreamed of the future impact his family would have on America's favorite pastime.
After a short while, the Hillerichs moved to Louisville, where J. Fred started a woodworking shop in 1856. Two of his sons, Adam and John Andrew "Bud" were born in the United States and would later join their father in his business. By 1864 "J.F. Hillerich, Job Turning" was in operation and filled orders for businesses by custom-turning everything from balusters to bedposts.
The firm thrived, and by 1875 the little woodworking shop employed about 20 people. In 1880 Bud Hillerich, who was an amateur baseball player, became an apprentice in his father's shop. Young Bud made his own baseball bats along with bats for several of his teammates.
The debate over the origins of the first bat continues to generate controversy among baseball enthusiasts, but the younger Hillerich was most certainly involved in getting his father's business involved with what would become the company's signature item. According to company legend, the first bat was turned by Bud for Pete "The Old Gladiator" Browning in 1884. Browning was a star on Louisville's professional American Association team - the Eclipse. On a spring afternoon Bud, then seventeen, witnessed Browning break his favorite bat. Bud offered to make a bat for his hero, and Browning accepted. After the young wood shop apprentice lathed a quality stick from white ash, according to the story, Browning got three hits with it in the next game.
