Description

The Half + Half bat that put DeMarini on the map returns for another season! The DeMarini Vexxum has been crushing the ball for years, and this season it's as mean as ever! Once the first of its kind as far as two-piece bats go, this year's Vexxum combines an X10 Alloy barrel with a C6 Composite handle. The X10 Alloy used on the barrel is finely-tuned and shaped to create the thinnest possible walls. This keeps the weight down and opens up the sweet spot for unbelievable performance! The C6 Composite handle works in unison with the alloy barrel and is specifically tailored for the single wall construction of the Vexxum. C6 features a wider composite weave, which in turn gives it more flex and unparalleled trampoline when the bat makes contact with the ball! The Vexxum is about as balanced as a bat can get, and is absolutely ideal for players looking to improve their swing speed this season! If you want mad pop and a light swing weight, this Vexxum is for you! DeMarini: Born Hardcore! The Vexxum is approved for play in Little League, Babe Ruth, Dixie, Pony, AABC, and USSSA. It is backed by a Full Twelve (12) Month Manufacturer's Warranty. Free Shipping!

Pros: nice put together bat. i bought both vexxum and voodoo . vexxum 29 17 and voodoo 29 16 . both bats are very nice. i let my 10 son swing them both hes a contact hitter with some power. i wanted to try vexxum because it was balanced but it felt very heavy compared to voodoo. voodoo is very light with tons of pop pay the exta 50 dollars. the ping off this bat will ring forever.

Cons: heavy but balanced. u feel weight through the whole bat. like a 2x4

End Heavy jRase parent

Pros: Low vibration

Cons: This bat is way too end-heavy. My son used it for a few games and his bat speed went down. I, and several other dads and coaches held this bat by its knob-end, while holding another bat of the same length and weight (31" - 19 oz) by its knob-end in our other hand to compare the two, and the DeMarini felt much heavier. My son started using another bat of the same weight and length, got his bat speed (and therefore swing mechanics) back up and started hitting again.

Questions and Answers

Have a question about the DeMarini Vexxum Youth Baseball Bat: DXVXL? Ask our team of experts and they will respond within 24 hours.

My son is 8 1/2, 54 inches, and 92 lbs. I am leaning toward the 30" for this season. Would finding a -12 or -13 help with the longer bat? I was also looking at the Rawlings Plasma, how would it stack up to this bat? Robert
Since you will be going up in size taking some weight off with a -12 or a -13 will help him adjust to a bigger bat. The Rawlings Plasma and the 2014 DeMarini Vexxum: DXVXL Youth will be very similar in performance. The Vexxum will be a better choice because of the two-piece design allowing the bat to flex, and it has more of a balanced feel.
Noah
I am 12 years old 5'3" and I'm a power hitter. I currently have the 2012 DeMarini Vexxum DXVNL. Which bat would be the better power bat? #7
Since the 2014 DeMarini Vexxum: DXVXL Youth has a upgrade in alloy from the SC4 Alloy to the X10 Alloy. The new alloy will add pop and durability.
Chad M.
I am a both a contact and power hitter, but more contact. Should I get this bat or 2014 Voodoo? little leaguer
The 2014 DeMarini Voodoo will be a great choice for a player who hits for contact and power.
Noah

The DeMarini Vexxum Youth is a balanced bat, so it would be great for a contact hitter.
Damon
Do you have to turn it a quarter inch when you get it? little leaguer

Kara
I'm a light contact hitter. I was curious whether the 2014 Vexxum or the 2014 Voodoo would be better for me? What are the differences between the two bats? Pete
If you are a contact hitter, the 2014 DeMarini Vexxum: DXVXL Youth will be better suited for you. It will have a balanced swing weight. The 2014 DeMarini Voodoo will have an end loaded swing weight and will be better suited for power hitters.
John H
Which bat has a larger sweet spot and hitting area, the Easton S2 or the 2014 Vexxum? Bren
The 2014 DeMarini Vexxum: DXVXL Youth and the Easton S2 will have identical sweet spots on both barrels of the bats.
Noah
Will the 2014 DeMarini Vexxum DXVXL youth give me more power than the Easton CV12? Avrey

Damon
I'm a contact hitter sometimes power, what bat should I get this or the 2014 DeMarini Voodoo? baseballPlayer15
The 2014 DeMarini Vexxum: DXVXL Youth bat and and the DeMarini Voodoo are both two-piece hybrid designs with alloy barrel and composite handle. The Vexxum will be very balanced where the Voodoo will feature an end loaded swing weight.
Aubrey
I am a contact hitter. Should I get the Easton S1, CF5, or Vexxum? contact hitter
All of these bats would be options for you as a contact hitter. The Easton S1 and the DeMarini CF5 us high-grade composite materials. The Vexxum uses composite and alloy materials.
Justin R.
We are wondering if this bat can be used at the batting cages with those yellow "dimpled" balls most have or does it need to be used with a real baseballs? Bri
The 2014 DeMarini Vexxum: DXVXL Youth should not be used on the batting cage with yellow dimpled balls, as it will severely compromise the durability of the bat.
Noah
My son is 10 and weighs 66 pounds. He has used the Vertex all spring and summer at 29 length 16 ounces and has had great success. He is a contact hitter. Is the DeMarini Vexxum at 29 length 17 ounces going to be as balanced as the Vertex? JR
The 2014 DeMarini Vexxum: DXVXL Youth is a very balanced two-piece bat. It is a great choice for a contact hitter.
Kara
Is this bat better than the 2013 Voodoo? bones
The 2014 DeMarini Vexxum: DXVXL Youth has upgraded Paradox Composite in the handle, making it stiffer than the 2013 model. They also upgraded to an anatomically correct knob for a more comfortable feel. Both the 2014 and 2013 DeMarini Voodoo: DXVDL Youth feature the same, high performing alloy in the barrel.
Katie
Any restrictions on use related to temperature? Chris
We do not recommend using any non-wood bat, including the 2014 DeMarini Vexxum: DXVXL Youth, in temperatures below 60°F (16°C). In those temperatures, the ball becomes much more dense and could damage or shorten the useful life of your bat. Composite can crack, and alloy can dent, so neither material is proven to be better in cold weather, unfortunately.
Mac
Will this bat last long enough for it to be worth the price. baseballfan
The 2014 DeMarini Vexxum: DXVXL Youth bat will have a 12 month manufacturer's warranty. It should definitely out live that.
Brandon
I am contact hitter, what bat should I get the S1 or DeMarini Vexxum? miguel cabera is boss
The 2014 DeMarini Vexxum: DXVXL Youth and the Easton S1 are both very balanced bats and would both be great options for a contact hitter.
Noah

Yes, the 2014 DeMarini Vexxum: DXVXL Youth bat will have the latest updated USSSA 1.15 BPF stamp.
Brandon
I'm a power hitter. Should I get the Vexxum or the XL1? david ortiz
The 2014 DeMarini Vexxum: DXVXL Youth is going to be balanced, with a lighter swing weight. The 2014 Easton XL1: YB14X1 Youth is going to be a heavier bat which may be a better option for power hitter.
Tori
Is there any place I can get this bat cheaper? david ortiz
This bat is still listed under the manufacturer's adjusted price, so it should be listed at this price through all retailers.
Tori
What is the difference between the 2014, 2013 and 2012 models? Brian
The 2012 DeMarini Vexxum: DXVNL has the old SC4 alloy barrel/C6 composite handle. The 2013 DeMarini Vexxum: DXVNL has the X10 alloy barrel/C6 composite handle. The 2014 DeMarini Vexxum: DXVXL has the has the X10 alloy barrel/C6 composite handle as well but it is more balanced as it is a drop 12.
John H
Is the 2013 or 2014 of these bats better? Billy
The 2014 DeMarini Vexxum: DXVXL Youth is going to be more balanced than the 2013 model.
Tori
My son is 12 years old, 5'2" and 110lbs. He is a contact hitter mostly, but getting power now with his growth spurt. Can you help me choose between the Marucci Black 2 and the DeMarini Vexxum DXVXL? GtownMa
The 2014 DeMarini Vexxum: DXVXL Youth and the 2013 Marucci Black 2 have several similarities. Both have high grade composite handles, and both feature top level aluminum barrels. Both bats are fairly balanced. The Black 2 is available in a -11, whereas the Vexxum comes in a -12. If you are looking for a slightly lighter bat, I would recommend the Vexxum.
Justin R.

Tori

Jason
Does this Vexxum have the smaller handle or end cap? Dan
The end cap, knob, and handle on the 2014 DeMarini Vexxum: DXVXL Youth will be very similar to the previous year. The 2014 Vexxum Youth will be much more balanced than the previous year and have a lighter swing weight.
Brandon

The 2014 DeMarini Vexxum (DXVXL) will have an approximate 7-8 inch sweet spot.
John
I cannot find the DeMarini Vexxum DXVXL on the Little Leagues list of approved bats. Is it listed? D.
Yes, the 2014 DeMarini Vexxum: DXVXL Youth will have a 2 1/4" barrel diameter and the updated USSSA 1.15 stamp. It will be legal for Little League play.
Brandon
I have the Easton XL2. I'm 11 years old, 5'6 120 pounds. I'm a power hitter. Should I get this bat or is my XL2 the same? Which do you recommend? Lex
The 2014 DeMarini Vexxum (DXVXL) and the Easton XL2 (YB13X2) youth models are similar in design. they are both hybrid models featuring composite handles and alloy barrels. However, the XL2 features an end loaded feel, whereas, the Vexxum features a more balanced design. Generally, end loaded bats are more recommended for power hitters and balanced models are preferred by contact hitters.
Patrick
My son has been using the DeMarini Vendetta model VCL11. It was a hand me down from a friend and he loved the feel and pop of the bat however it has cracked and was looking at the Vexxum or the C5 LE. He is more contact hitter. He really liked the feel of the Vendetta with no stinging of the hands. jaybird
The 2014 DeMarini Vexxum (DXVXL Youth) is the most similar to the DeMarini Vendetta. Both are two-piece bats with the composite handle and alloy barrel. The Vexxum and the DeMarin CF5 LE are both designed for a contact hitter.
Kara
I want to know if I use this bat in a batting cage or in a game will a hit cause vibration in my hands from the handle? Jesse
The 2014 DeMarini Vexxum (DXVXL) features a composite handle that helps reduce vibration when the ball is hit.
Kara
Hi there, my son has a DeMarini Vendetta. We were thinking of upgrading to the Vexxum, same size and weight (31"/19 oz). Is it worth the upgrade? He loves the Vendetta and hits very well with it. Akappell
The 2014 DeMarini Vexxum Youth (DXVXL) will have an upgraded alloy compared to the DeMarini Vendetta Youth (DXVTL). The X10 Alloy on the DeMarini Vexxum will perform better than the SC4 alloy on the older Vendetta.
Kelby
Which would you recommend the DeMarini Vexxum or the Easton XL3? mike
The 2014 DeMarini Vexxum (DXVXL) would be a better choice for a contact hitter since it is a balanced bat. If the player is more of a power hitter, I would suggest the Easton XL3 because it is an end loaded model.
Kelby
Which bat has a bigger sweet spot, the Vexxum or the Voodoo Paradox? tbone
The 2014 DeMarini Vexxum (DXVXL) and the DeMarini Voodoo (DXVDL) have fairly comparable sweet spots. The Voodoo will have a slightly larger sweet spot, an end loaded swing weight, and a -13 length to weight ratio. The Vexxum has a -12 length to weight ratio, and a very balanced swing.
Justin R.
Is this bat good for a 13 year old girl? Lish
Assuming that she is playing fastpitch softball, this 2014 DeMarini Vexxum (DXVXL) Youth bat would not be a good option. This is a Youth Baseball bat, and in that case, she would need a bat in the following link: http://www.justbats.com/products/softball%20bats~fastpitch/. But it totally depends on a combination of whether she is playing baseball or softball and what her league requires as to whether this is a good choice or not.
Mac
My son is a good contact hitter but has trouble with strength and pop. Will the 2014 DeMarini Vexxum (DXVXL) be better for him or the 2014 DeMarini Voodoo OVERLORD (DXVDL) Youth? He's 11 55" and 80 lbs. Joe Baker
Both are great bats. The 2014 DeMarini Voodoo OVERLORD (DXVDL) Youth will be slightly lighter then the 2014 DeMarini Vexxum (DXVXL). The Voodoo Overlord will also have a higher performing composite handle and alloy barrel, in addition to the D-Fusion handle which redirects power back to the barrel.
Damon
what temp should I use the 2014 DeMarini Vexxum in ballplayer55555
We recommend that using the 2014 DeMarini Vexxum (DXVXL) in temperatures not below 55 degrees. Also to not store your bat under temperatures of 55 degrees either.
Kyle
Is this a good bat for fastpitch softball 12U,12 year old power hitter? Let me know or what do you recommend? bernie
The 2014 DeMarini Vexxum (DXVXL) is a youth baseball bat. It can't be used in fastpitch softball. We recommend an end loaded, fastpitch bat such as the 2014 DeMarini CF6 Insane (DXCFI) for a power hitter.
Kara
Is this bat suitable for 8U machine pitch, machine set at 43 mph? Swinn
The 2014 DeMarini Vexxum (DXVXL) can be used in 8U machine pitch.
Kara
My son currently swings an older Vexxum and I am looking to upgrade. He's more of a contact hitter so balance is most important to me. Which is better balanced; the Vexxum or CF5? Tom
Both the 2014 DeMarini Vexxum (DXVXL) and the DeMarini CF5 (DXCFL) will be very well balanced models and should be a good option for your player. The main difference would be the barrel material. The Vexxum would be closest to what they are using because it features an alloy barrel. The barrel of the CF5 is made out of a composite material that will have a different feel than alloy. Rather than a ping on an alloy bat, the composite barrel will have more of a thud or a crack and will have a different feedback.
Patrick
I am looking to purchace either the Vexxum or the Easton XL3 for my son who is in 8U and is a power hitter currently using a TPX Omaha with great results, which bat would you recommend? David
The Easton XL3: (YB13X3) would be a really great choice if you are looking for a bat that will provide a lot of power. The Easton XL3 will be a one-piece alloy design and will provide a lot of great speed because it will incorporate THT100 Scandium Alloy. It will also be a little bit stiffer, and this is typically preferred by power hitters. If your son was a big fan of the TPX Omaha, the Easton XL3 will be fairly similar. However, the Easton XL3 will be slightly end-loaded. The weight distribution will be a little bit heavier towards the end of the barrel, but generally this is also preferred by players who consider themselves power hitters. The power brigade series by Easton was designed for power hitters, and I think the Easton XL3 would be a great option to go with.
Merritt
My son is 10 years old and he weighs 85 lb. and is 4'7. Would the new Vexxum in a 30" 18 oz., be a good choice for him? He is a good contact hitter with some power. He loves the bat. chris
The 2014 DeMarini Vexxum (DXVXL) is a good bat for a contact hitter like your son. I would suggest a 29" 17 oz. or even a 30" 18 oz. Either size would work well for your son.
Zach
My son is 10 years old 4'8" and weighs 105 lbs. Would the 31" 19 oz be best for him? terry
Based on his height and weight, we suggest a 30" model in the 2014 DeMarini Vexxum (DXVXL) Youth. However, if you think he can handle the extra ounce a 31" model works as well.
Jason
I need a -3 BBCOR certified bat. Is this one certified? David
The 2014 DeMarini Vexxum: (DXVXL) will not be BBCOR certified. This model will have a length to weight ratio of -12 and will be the youth model.
Merritt
I'm 5'1 and roughly 100-105 pounds, what size would you recommend? baseball bat
Based on the information you gave based I would recommend a 31" length in the 2014 DeMarini Vexxum (DXVXL).
Zach
My is 8 years old and is playing coach pitch. He is 4'9" and weighs 125 lbs. What would you get? JESS
Based on his height and weight we recommend a 30" bat. The 30" 2014 DeMarini Vexxum (DXVXL) is currently out of stock. We recommend the 2014 DeMarini CF6 (DXCFL).
Kara
I am 12 and weigh 120 pounds. Should I get the Vexxum or the Overlord youth bat? downtown brown
The preference for whether you should get the 2014 DeMarini Vexxum (DXVXL) or the 2014 DeMarini Voodoo OVERLORD (DXVDL) would be based less on your weight and more on the style of bat you prefer. If you like an end-loaded feel and have good swing speed I would go with the OVERLORD. If you like a more balanced model and are looking to increase swing velocity I would go with the Vexxum.
Patrick
I am 12 years old, 5'9" and I weigh 140 lbs. Would the 32" and 20 oz be good for me? base ball
Based on your approximate height and weight, the 32/20 in the 2014 DeMarini Vexxum: (DXVXL) would fit you extremely well.
Merritt
Is this bat legal in the Cal Ripken baseball league? Axel
The 2014 DeMarini Vexxum (DXVXL) Youth is legal for play in Cal Ripken. It has a 2 1/4" barrel and features the USSSA 1.15 BPF stamp.
Jason
My son is 14 and 5'11 weighing about 145. What is the best bat for him in Babe Ruth league. He is a power hitter hitting the fence with a bounce or two on a legion field. ksantee
According to your son's height and weight I would recommend a 32" length in the DeMarini Vexxum (DXVXL). The DeMarini Vexxum is a great choice if your want to have very fast bat speed. If you are wanting to generate more power I would go with the 2014 DeMarini Voodoo Overlord (DXVDL). The DeMarini Voodoo Overlord (DXVDL) will have an end loaded swing weight which helps batters with generating more power.
Zach
My son is 165 pounds and is 10 almost 11 little over 5ft tall what do you recommend Scoops
Based on your son's height and weight I would recommend a 2014 DeMarini Vexxum (DXVXL) in a 32"/20 oz.
Bobby
My son is 8 and weighs 75 pounds. What size bat is right for him? He really likes the 2014 DeMarini Vexxum. jhangey
The best way to determine the correct bat size for a player is based on their height and weight. However, 8 year olds typically swing 29" models in the 2014 DeMarini Vexxum (DXVXL) Youth. For more sizing information check out our Bat Coach: http://www.justbats.com/bat-coach/

I am 11 years old and going into 5th grade. I am 5 foot 3 and weigh 110 pounds. What bat should I get and what size? karschnike
If you are looking for a balanced 2 1/4 inch barrel diameter bat, the 2014 DeMarini Vexxum (DXVXL) would be a great choice. Based on your height and weight, we would suggest the 31 inch length.
Patrick
I am 5'3" and 110 pounds. What weight should my son get? karsch
Based on the approximate height and weight of the player, I would suggest a 31" in the 2014 DeMarini Vexxum: (DXVXL). As for the weight, this can be harder to determine. Ultimately, it will come down to the player's individual strength. If you are looking for the Youth model, the only size we have available is a -12. This size will be very light weight.
Merritt
I am 5'1" and about 110 pounds. I am 12 years old. This bat is too light for me. Is there another bat I should get or do you still recommend this one? cdb43
The -12 length to weight ratio of the 2014 DeMarini Vexxum (DXVXL) Youth bat might be a little light for your age. In a few years or sooner, BBCOR bats with -3 length to weight ratios will be a requirement. So it may be a good idea to begin transitioning to heavier bats. Unfortunately, the weight is hard to make a recommendation on as it's dependent on your strength. For your age, you might consider a -11 or -10 model this year.
Mac
My son is going into the 6th grade, and is about 5'4" weighing about 130 lbs. What size bat should I get him for fall ball this year, and for next season? Vinny
Based on the player's approximate height and weight, I would probably suggest 31" in the 2014 DeMarini Vexxum: (DXVXL). However, if you would like him to be able to use the bat a little bit longer, I may suggest bumping up to a 32".
Merritt
I am new to baseball. Do all bats have to be broken in such as half and half bats? clueless to sports
Only bats with composite barrels require a break-in process. Hybrid or "half and half" designs like the 2014 DeMarini Vexxum (DXVXL) would have an alloy barrel and would not need to be broken in to see maximum performance.
Patrick
I am 5'1" and about 100 lbs, should I get the Vexxum or the S2? Homerunhitter73
The Easton S2 Youth Baseball Bat: (YB13S2) and 2014 DeMarini Vexxum Youth Baseball Bat: (DXVXL) will both be fairly similar. Both models will incorporate a hybrid design, however, the alloy materials used in the barrels will be different. The The Easton S2 Youth Baseball Bat: (YB13S2) features THT100 Scadium Alloy, and the 2014 DeMarini Vexxum Youth Baseball Bat: (DXVXL) will incorporate X10 Alloy. Both models will be balanced, and have both been extremely popular, and high performing.
Merritt
I am 4'11" and weigh 90 lbs. What size bat should I get? What bat is good for me? I am a contact hitter. tyler
Based on your height and weight, we suggest a 31" model in the 2014 DeMarini Vexxum Youth Baseball Bat (DXVXL). The Vexxum is a terrific bat for a contact hitter. The two-piece design and balanced swing weight makes it ideal for contact hitters.
Jason
I weigh 90 lbs and am 5'4". Would the 31" or 32" be best for me? MAtt Baseball
Based on your height and weight, we suggest a 31" model in the 2014 DeMarini Vexxum Youth Baseball Bat (DXVXL).
Jason
My son is 49" and weighs 60 lbs. He plays Coach Pitch. Assuming he will grow a little over the winter, would you be able to suggest the DeMarini Vexxum 29" 17 oz? E
Based on his height and weight, we currently suggest a 28" 2014 DeMarini Vexxum Youth Baseball Bat (DXVXL). However, the 29" model will work just fine for him as well especially if he grows a little bit.
Jason
Can this bat be use in Babe Ruth League? Nelson Baseball
Absolutely. The 2014 DeMarini Vexxum Youth Baseball Bat (DXVXL) is approved for play in Little League, Babe Ruth, Dixie, Pony, AABC, and USSSA.
Mac
How does the 2014 Vexxum compare with the forthcoming 2015 Vexxum? How do they both compare to the new Mizuno Generation? I'm undecided on what to buy my 10 year old for Little League. He's more of a contact hitter and complains about vibration in his current bat (an Easton Reflex). Dell
The 2014 DeMarini Vexxum Youth Baseball Bat (DXVXL) and 2015 Vexxum models should be designed very much the same. Both will also feel the same during the swing. The 2015 models will have an updated color scheme. It will feature a composite handle and an alloy barrel. Two-piece bats with composite handles like this one will cut down on the hand sting and vibrations on mishits. The Mizuno Generation will be an all alloy bat model. It will be very light and balanced during the swing.
Brandon
I'm about 5' and about 100 lbs. What size should I have? powerhitter
A 30" bat length would be recommended at your height and weight for the 2014 DeMarini Vexxum Youth Baseball Bat: DXVXL.
Brandon
Is this Little League approved? Is it good for a 4 foot 9, 78 pound child? Sarah
The 2014 DeMarini Vexxum Youth Baseball Bat (DXVXL) is Little League approved. For a child of that size, we would suggest a 30 inch bat.
Patrick
Which bat swings heavier, the 29 inch 17 ounce, 2014 Vexxum Youth or the 28 inch 15 ounce 2015 Voodoo Overlord Youth? Chris
Due to the end-loaded feel of the 2015 DeMarini Voodoo OVERLORD FT Youth Baseball Bat (DXVDL) and the balanced feel of the 2014 DeMarini Vexxum Youth Baseball Bat (DXVXL) their swing weights would be fairly similar. The shorter and lighter actual weight of the Voodoo OVERLORD would make it a bit lighter overall though.
Patrick
What is the drop on this bat? ???
The drop on the 2014 DeMarini Vexxum Youth Baseball Bat (DXVXL) is -12 length to weight ratio.
Allison
My son is 11 years old and is 4 foot 7 and weighs 57 pounds. He is a contact hitter. He plays Pony baseball. What 2 5/8 inch size should he use? What is the difference between the Vexxum and the Voodoo? Which would be better for him? cheese whistles
Based on height and weight, we would probably recommend around an 29 inch bat for your player. The difference between the 2015 DeMarini Vexxum NVS Senior League Baseball Bat (DXVXR) and the 2015 DeMarini Voodoo OVERLORD FT Senior League Baseball Bat (DXVDR) models would be that the Vexxum is more balanced while the Voodoo is more end-loaded. For a contact style hitter, I would recommend going with the Vexxum because the balanced feel will be easier to swing and to improve bat speed with.
Patrick
How expensive is this model? GIGI
The DeMarini Vexxum Youth Baseball Bat (DXVXL) is currently $149.99 for all sizes.

About the Brand

In 1992, DeMarini Sports had something to celebrate. The three-year-old company had climbed a rung on the proverbial ladder of success, moving its world headquarters from a dirt-floored barn to a slightly larger metal shack. "It was a big move for us," recalled Ray DeMarini from the batting cage of DeMarini Sport’s present-day Bat Industrial Complex. "The new shop was larger, more storm resistant, and -best of all- it had a heater."

In the early days, DeMarini Sports hardly made a blip on the radar screen of softball. With no retailers and virtually no advertising budget, DeMarini grew steadily by selling high-performance bats directly to customers. While established companies made "juiced" bats for the pros and ordinary bats for the public, DeMarini focused on making one line of high-performance bats for pros and amateurs alike. This approach, combined with a passion for the sport, led to the greatest innovation in softball history - the world’s first multi-wall bat: the DeMarini Doublewall.

Released in 1993, the DeMarini Doublewall was the world’s first multi-wall bat. Like a modern golf driver or oversized tennis racket, the Doublewall had a giant "sweetspot," which allowed average players to hit like pros. DeMarini’s sales exploded, and before long opposing bat manufacturers to notice. DeMarini - a homegrown company led by a softball fanatic - had shaken the establishment silly.

To understand the rise of the DeMarini Dynasty, you need to know Ray DeMarini. A cult hero among avid players, Ray DeMarini emerged on the professional softball scene at the age of 40, a veritable geriatric among younger players. With a scientific approach to training, a batting speed of 96 miles-per-hour and a bombastic attitude, DeMarini fast earned a reputation as a savage competitor.

In June of 1987, ESPN launched a nationwide search for a hardcore player to advise on a series of instructional softball videos. When approached by producer Erich Lytle, the biggest boys in softball repeatedly spoke of a five-foot-seven softball giant—Ray DeMarini. DeMarini had mastered reflex hitting, a technique that drops the ball squarely between the infield and outfield. Impressed with DeMarini's knowledge and scientific approach to training, Lytle not only hired Ray as an advisor—he hired him as the host. Together, they produced Ray DeMarini's Reflex Hitting System, ESPN's most successful home video to date.

Having garnered national recognition through ESPN, Ray turned his efforts toward designing a high-performance bat for the masses. To accomplish this, he needed an engineer. "Not just an engineer," he said, "but a boot-strapping rocket scientist who could build an empire with pocket change." Ray's call was answered by Mike Eggiman. Having grown up on a farm, Eggiman was adept at making the most of a situation. Case in point: the company's first piece of automated bat-making equipment had the heart of an abandoned washing machine.

With Eggiman as Chief Engineer, DeMarini Sports delivered a series of industry firsts: the first multi-wall bat (Doublewall Distance), the first high-performance bat for massive players (Fatboy) and the first high-performance youth bat (Black Coyote).

In 2000, DeMarini joined forces with Wilson Sporting Goods to develop the next generation of hitting technology. Ray believed it was a perfect fit, as both companies shared a vision of developing game-enhancing equipment for avid players. What’s more, the companies had complimentary products: Wilson was the leader in gloves, balls and protective gear, while DeMarini made the world’s finest bats. According to Chris Considine, Vice President/General Manager of Wilson Sporting Goods: "The thing that struck me most about DeMarini was their passion for sports and their true competitiveness.

Within a year, DeMarini unveiled the industry’s first concept bat, the $35,000 F1. Secured under lock and key at the DeMarini Bat Industrial Complex in Hillsboro, Oregon, the F1 served as a technological storehouse for future products, including DeMarini’s landmark Half & Half system.

In December 2001, 12 years after the genesis of DeMarini Sports, Ray DeMarini died of cancer in his Northwest Portland home. He was 55. The next summer, the Portland Metro Softball Association paid homage to the “King of Softball” with the dedication of Ray DeMarini Field. Formerly known as Delta #1, the field was DeMarini’s favorite place to test bats during the early days of business. Ray DeMarini—bat maker and player extraordinaire—was remembered for his high-performance softball bats and unwavering encouragement of everyday players. Today, a 40-foot sign announcing RAY DEMARINI FIELD graces the outfield, and an interpretive display chronicling Ray’s life greets players as they register for games.

More "Insane Dedication to Performance" is in store for tomorrow.
