Why are the Demarini bats numbered around the top of the barrel at the cap?
This is called the rotation index and is helpful when breaking-in DeMarini's composite bats. These just act as a reminder to the player to rotate the bat between each hit to ensure an even break-in. For instance, if you're looking at the "5" on the index, the next hit you should rotate it so you're looking at the "6".

Both are great bats, but I would give an advantage to the Vexxum in terms of overall performance. Both are well suited for contact and power hitters alike, but I feel he'll get more pop with the Vexxum in his hands.

Both are great bats. The Catalyst is a one-piece bat that will be pretty stiff. If your son is a stronger hitter with good swing speed, the Catalyst may be the better option due to it's one piece, stiff design. The Vexxum is a two-piece bat with more flex. If he's more of a contact hitter or has below average to average swing speed, the Vexxum may be the better option.

While all three of these bats are great choices, I would suggest going with the XL3 if your son is a strong power hitter. This bat was designed more for power hitters and is a one piece design, unlike the XL2 or the Vexxum. This bat has an alloy barrel and doesn't need a full break as a full composite would. However, it does have a composite handle, and I would recommend about 100 hits off a tee starting at about 40% power and gradually increasing. Also, be sure to rotate the bat a quarter of an inch in your hands between each hit

The youth Vexxum bats with a yellow barrel are the 2011 model and the youth Vexxum bats with the black barrel are the 2012 model. Both bats will be the same, except for the difference in color and the model year.
