They are both 1 piece all composite bats. Both have the USSSA 1.15 BPF stamp on it. The only real difference is the type of composite material that is used. Both will have great pop on them once broken in.

I would suggest he stay with the same drop as he was previosly using since he already has great bat speed. I would suggest the 2012 Louisville Slugger TPX Omaha: SL126XL or 2012 Louisville Slugger TPX Omaha: SL126 in the -10 if you want an all alloy bat.

The Catalyst only comes in a 2 5/8" barrel with a -11 drop. It will though have the new required USSSA stamp on the bat.

We suggest trying not to use composite bats in weather under 50 degrees. The bat has a higher chance of breaking in that weather.

First, does the travel ball league he plays in allow big barrel? If so, then The Catalyst would be a good choice. For his size I would go with a 30 or 31 inch bat.

My 8 year old has been using a 29"(-12) 2 1/4" bat but wants a 2 5/8" for travel ball this spring. His coach recommends finding a 29"(-12), though I'm weary of the Triton pricewise and the Omaha on the other end looks to be too heavy. This is a very good bat with tons of pop. A good size for him would be the 31/20oz bat. This bat has a composite barrel and will give him more power than an alloy barrel bat.

Just bought this bat for my 12u son. Just wondering other than cage time, what maybe can we do to break this bat in? chuck
To be honest, if you do use it in a cage, make sure the machine only throws real baseballs. If they use those yellow dimpled, compressed rubber balls, I would not use that bat in the cage. Those balls are horrible on composite bats. Best way to do it is regular BP on the field, or a soft toss. Rotating the bat every few hits, for an even break in.

The only one that lists the Pony league approval is the youth small barrel. It is not imprinted into the big barrel. So I would check with your league to make sure big barrel bats are allowed.

Moving him up in weight and length is always a good thing to do as they get older and bigger. Make sure that he is comfortable with a 2" increase in length. I think that he should be fine moving up though

You can, but it's not recommended. Dimpled pitching machine balls are very dense and are known to decrease the lifespan of any bat. If the 2012 Louisville Slugger TPX Catalyst is your game bat, I recommend not using it in the cage unless it uses real baseballs.

My son has been using the Prodigy (29/19) SLP102 with great results. Is batting over .600 in USSSA, AAU ball in central Florida with his first home run in our last tournament. Was looking for a bat for next season and keep coming back to this bat. He is 4'8" and 70 pounds. Would you suggest the Catalyst 30/19 or go back with the Legit? Looking for good pop and balance. First of all, based on your son's height and weight, a 30" bat would be recommended with a weight around 19 or 20 ounces. It's generally a good idea to move up an ounce or two in weight every time you purchase a new bat (but at 8 or 9 years old, this isn't as pertinent). I always recommend sticking with what the player has had success with in the past (or at least something similar). The Louisville Slugger Catalyst would be a great option. It has great pop and good balance. Sticking with the Worth Prodigy is another option, but that means he would be using a 30" 20oz model, which shouldn't be a problem for him. Another bat I would recommend would be the Easton S3. It is a very balanced bat and has similar pop to the Prodigy. All would be great choices, but I really think he'd like the Catalyst.

Z1000 vs Catalyst vs Triton senior league bats. Z1000 has the disks inserted in the barrel to not allow the bat to over perform. The Triton and Catalyst do not. Does that mean the Triton and the Catalyst will out perform the Z1000? Disks or no disks, the Louisville Slugger Z-1000, Louisville Slugger Catalyst and Louisville Slugger TPX Triton II will perform on the same level. The discs allow bats to perform at their best form day one. Composite bats without the discs will require a break in period and will take some time before they reach the same performance level as bats with the discs. Based on customer feedback, I would give the Catalyst an edge on the Triton in terms of pop. However, I think the Catalyst and Z-1000 will be on equal playing fields when it comes to pop.

We recommend the 29" 18 oz Louisville Slugger TPX Catalyst. A 30" bat is normally used for 10 or 11 year old players and the 2 oz. drop would be too much of a jump for a young player.

The recommended bat length for him would be 30". At ten years old, with a 30" bat I would recommend anywhere between an 18 oz. and a 20 oz. bat depending upon his strength and reaction time at the plate.

Sorry several questions. I purchased two TPX Catalyst for my boys (8 and 10). Is it true you should not use the composite bats in batting cages? Explain the "break in" period to me (length of time, number of hits). Do you recommend a tuff sleeve or similar product for use during practice to extend bat life ? Will that effect the break ii? You should not use any bat in batting cages that use those yellow dimpled balls. These pitching machine balls are very dense and can cause damage to any bat whether it's composite or alloy. Composite bats require 150-200 hits off a tee or soft toss to break-in. You'll need to have your boys start at about 40% power, gradually increasing, while rotating the bat a half inch in their hands between each hit. A Tuff sleeve is not proven to extend the lifespan of bats. If you use one, I would increase the break-in by 50-75 hits.

It's always recommend that a player stick with the same type of bat they have used in the past with the most success. In doing so, the player is much, much more likely to have continued success at the plate. Thus, the Omaha would be recommended. A 30" model would be recommended.

In doing so, the player is much, much more likely to have continued success at the plate. The Catalyst is a one-piece bat, where the S1 is a two-piece bat. The S1 will be a little more evenly balanced than the Catalyst.

In 1842, J. Frederick Hillerich emigrated with his family from Baden-Baden, Germany to the United States. Eight years before, the 1834 Book of Sports had made its debut as the nation's first publication covering baseball. But when he arrived in Baltimore, J. Frederick Hillerich would never have dreamed of the future impact his family would have on America's favorite pastime.
After a short while, the Hillerichs moved to Louisville, where J. Fred started a woodworking shop in 1856. Two of his sons, Adam and John Andrew "Bud" were born in the United States and would later join their father in his business. By 1864 "J.F. Hillerich, Job Turning" was in operation and filled orders for businesses by custom-turning everything from balusters to bedposts.
The firm thrived, and by 1875 the little woodworking shop employed about 20 people. In 1880 Bud Hillerich, who was an amateur baseball player, became an apprentice in his father's shop. Young Bud made his own baseball bats along with bats for several of his teammates.
The debate over the origins of the first bat continues to generate controversy among baseball enthusiasts, but the younger Hillerich was most certainly involved in getting his father's business involved with what would become the company's signature item. According to company legend, the first bat was turned by Bud for Pete "The Old Gladiator" Browning in 1884. Browning was a star on Louisville's professional American Association team - the Eclipse. On a spring afternoon Bud, then seventeen, witnessed Browning break his favorite bat. Bud offered to make a bat for his hero, and Browning accepted.
