Description

If you're looking for overall value, a bat to get you through the end of the Summer season, or just solid wood to use in the cage, look no further than the Louisville Slugger MLB Prime BLEM Birch I13 Wood Bat: WBVBI13-EBBLEM. Each Louisville Slugger MLB Prime BLEM Birch I13 Wood Bat: WBVBI13-EBBLEM is created with the intention of becoming a member of Slugger's top wood bat line: the MLB Prime Series. But due to cosmetic blemishes in the wood such as Tiger Striping in the wood, uneven grain, light/heavy billets, and many other minor cosmetic flaws, Louisville Slugger separates each WBVBI13-EBBLEM from the stock destined for game-day action and air time in the Big Leagues. The bats that are left behind are still much too good to end up in the trash pile, so these solid Birch bats are finished with the popular bone-rubbing process that closes the pores in the wood for added durability and pop. Although it's the fastest growing species in professional baseball, some may not know what to expect from a Birch wood bat; so here it is - Birch features the ideal combination of surface hardness and flexibility for increased durability. With a Hardness similar to Maple, Birch bats provide great sound and feel at contact. And with a Flexibility closer to Ash, these designs allow for forgiveness on off-the-sweet-spot contact, decreasing the chance of fractured breakage. Lighter per pound than Maple, Birch also affords lighter swing weights (if you're testing out comparable turn models). Each Louisville Slugger MLB Prime BLEM Birch I13 Wood Bat: WBVBI13-EBBLEM will feature an approximate -2 to -3 length to weight ratio and can be used in most adult wood bat leagues. MLB Prime doesn't disappoint Bill coach

Pros: Great bat at a great price. Only "blemish" is the bat is stamped 34" and it's a 33". That works just fine for my wallet! Great looking bat with very nice pop and feel. Bought 2 and ready to click to hit for a another one at this price!

Cons: it's stamped as a 34"????

About the Brand

In 1842, J. Frederick Hillerich emigrated with his family from Baden-Baden, Germany to the United States. Eight years before, the 1834 Book of Sports had made its debut as the nation's first publication covering baseball. But when he arrived in Baltimore, J. Frederick Hillerich would never have dreamed of the future impact his family would have on America's favorite pastime.

After a short while, the Hillerichs moved to Louisville, where J. Fred started a woodworking shop in 1856. Two of his sons, Adam and John Andrew "Bud" were born in the United States and would later join their father in his business. By 1864 "J.F. Hillerich, Job Turning" was in operation and filled orders for businesses by custom-turning everything from balusters to bedposts.

The firm thrived, and by 1875 the little woodworking shop employed about 20 people. In 1880 Bud Hillerich, who was an amateur baseball player, became an apprentice in his father's shop. Young Bud made his own baseball bats along with bats for several of his teammates.

The debate over the origins of the first bat continues to generate controversy among baseball enthusiasts, but the younger Hillerich was most certainly involved in getting his father's business involved with what would become the company's signature item. According to company legend, the first bat was turned by Bud for Pete "The Old Gladiator" Browning in 1884. Browning was a star on Louisville's professional American Association team - the Eclipse. On a spring afternoon Bud, then seventeen, witnessed Browning break his favorite bat. Bud offered to make a bat for his hero, and Browning accepted. After the young wood shop apprentice lathed a quality stick from white ash, according to the story, Browning got three hits with it in the next game.

Louisville Slugger gloves are worn by more pitchers in Major League Baseball than any other glove.
