Great Composite! Wayne parent

Pros: Don't be afraid of this composite bat. My son has always bought another brand's composite bats, but because of the time of year, none were available. Thought we'd try this bat and have not been disappointed. Great pop and feel. Lizard skin grip is an added bonus. Bat seems to be as hot as the other brand that we normally buy.

Cons: None so far

Questions and Answers

Have a question about the Louisville Slugger Prime 916 Senior League Baseball Bat: SLP9165? Ask our team of experts and they will respond within 24 hours.

Is this bat made for contact hitters and is it end loaded? AJ
The 2016 Louisville Slugger Prime 916 Senior League Baseball Bat: SLP9165 features a balanced swing weight and it is typically best suited for a contact hitter.
Jason
Will this bat have a larger barrel than the CF8? Chris
The barrel and sweet spot size on the 2016 Louisville Slugger Prime 916 Senior League Baseball Bat (SLP9165) compared to the 2016 DeMarini CF8 Senior League Baseball Bat (DXCF5) will be very similar; the DeMarini will be slightly larger. With that said, it is really personal preference on the two and both would be great bats to swing.
Cameron
How does this year's SLP5195 differ from last year's SLP9155? Mike
The 2016 Louisville Slugger Prime 916 Senior League Baseball Bat (SLP9165) has better grip tape and improved composite material compared to the 2015 Louisville Slugger Prime 915 Senior League.
Cameron
Is there a big difference in the performance of the 915 compared to the newer 916? I understand the composite material is different and the grip is better in the 916, but performance wise, does the ball "pop" the same off the 915 as it would the 916? kenny
The 2016 Louisville Slugger Prime 916 Senior League Baseball Bat: SLP9165 and the Prime 915 have same overall performance and one is not better than the other in that regard. The new composite in the Prime 916 provides for a slightly longer barrel and bigger sweet spot.
Jason
Is this a composite bat or a composite handle and aluminum barrel? wes
The 2016 Louisville Slugger Prime 916 Senior League Baseball Bat: SLP9165 features a two-piece fully composite design so both the handle and the barrel will be composite.
Cameron
Is this bat for power hitters? Ray R
If a power hitter is looking for a two-piece, all-composite bat with a balanced swing weight and -5 length-to-weight ratio; this 2016 Louisville Slugger Prime 916 Senior League Baseball Bat (SLP9165) is certainly a model for consideration.
Ben
Which bat would be better: this one or the MAKO XL? Ray R
Both this 2016 Louisville Slugger Prime 916 Senior League Baseball Bat (SLP9165) and the MAKO XL will be two-piece, all-composite bats. However, the MAKO XL will differ as it comes with an end-loaded swing weight while this Prime 916 is balanced. Depending upon your personal preferences, you'll want to make a decision based upon if you prefer the end-load of the MAKO XL or the balanced feel of this Prime 916.
Ben
I have read some bad durability reviews on this same bat, but in the -3 BBCOR style. No reviews to go off of for the -5. Has LS given people a hard time on returns for defects before the 12 month warranty? Are there a lot of options in stock? Dew
The poor durability reviews that have been reflected on the BBCOR options of the Prime 916 have not been noted as frequently on the other size options. If this bat interests you, then I would recommend considering it for purchase. I have not heard of Slugger giving trouble to customers returning defective bats under the 12 month warranty period. We have plenty of each size in stock, so if you needed to wait to make a purchase, you could certainly do so.
Ben
In comparing the 916 (drop 5) and 516 (drop 5), what is the difference in swing weight balance, vibration for miss-hits, and the amount of pop between the two bats? Blake
Both of these bats will be balanced with the 916 gaining the edge. As for vibration from off-centered hits, the Prime 916 will offer more as this bat is a two-piece design; one-piece bats like the Omaha 516 will not flex on impact and as such will sting your hands more when the ball is not squared up properly. As for the pop, both will be similar but the Prime 916 will also hold the edge here as well.
Cameron
I was wondering which bat would be a better drop 5, the Prime 916, the Omaha, or the Select 716. Let me know which has more pop, durability and power. Carter
All three of these bats from Louisville Slugger have shown good durability and pop. Power will be dictated by the amount of bat speed a player can generate in conjunction with the velocity from the pitcher. The more velocity from the pitcher, the less bat speed needed and visa versa. The Prime 916 will be the most balanced model (this is a two-piece, fully composite design with balanced swing weight), the Omaha will offer the least amount of vibration reduction from off-centered hits (one-piece, fully alloy design with balanced swing weight) while the Select 716 is the most ideal bat for a power hitter (two-piece, hybrid design with a slightly end-loaded swing weight).
Cameron
I'm 5'7" and 115 lbs. Should I get the 31" or 32" bat? Willy
Based upon your height and weight, my general recommendation would be to get this 2016 Louisville Slugger Prime 916 Senior League Baseball Bat (SLP9165) in the 31" length. As long as you feel that you can handle the 26 oz weight of the 31" option of this bat, I would recommend that size option.
Ben
Is this bat also approved for high school? alex
No, the 2016 Louisville Slugger Prime 916 Senior League Baseball Bat SLP9165 is not approved for high school. For high school and college play they will require a BBCOR bat with a -3 drop.
John
Is this bat balanced? Chuck
Yes, this 2016 Louisville Slugger Prime 916 Senior League Baseball Bat (SLP9165) will come with a balanced swing weight to it.
Ben
Does this bat crack easily? tj
Unfortunately, every bat will run the risk of denting or cracking. However, I have not heard that this specific 2016 Louisville Slugger Prime 916 Senior League Baseball Bat (SLP9165) is extra vulnerable to cracking when compared to other bats available on the market. That being said, if you were to purchase this bat and it cracked on you, you would be covered by the manufacturer's warranty period for up to 12 months from the original purchase date.
Ben
Is this bat legal in Little League Juniors? Sam
No, the 2016 Louisville Slugger Prime 916 Senior League Baseball Bat: SLP9165 is not legal for play in Little League Juniors. Composite barrel bats are required to have the BBCOR certification in Little League Juniors and this bat only features the USSSA 1.15 BPF stamp and not the BBCOR certification.
Jason
Is this bat legal for Babe Ruth 13-15? Nate
The 2016 Louisville Slugger Prime 916 Senior League Baseball Bat (SLP9165) will not be league for Babe Ruth 13-15 because it has a composite barrel. To be legal in Babe Ruth 13-15 bats with a composite barrel need to be BBCOR certified.
Carter
Is this bat hot out of the wrapper or is there a break in period? seafood456
The 2016 Louisville Slugger Prime 916 Senior League Baseball Bat: SLP9165 will require a break-in period of roughly 100-150 swings.
Cameron
Is this bat better than the 2015 Easton xl1 -5 as far as pop and feel? Daniel
The 2016 Louisville Slugger Prime 916 Senior League Baseball Bat: SLP9165 is going to be more balanced than the Easton XL1 and feature less vibration on the hands, but the pop would be similar.
Logan
How long, on average, does this bat last you? Robbie
It is impossible to say how long the 2016 Louisville Slugger Prime 916 Senior League Baseball Bat: SLP9165 may last compared to another bat or from one player to the next. With that said, this bat does feature a 12 month manufacturer's warranty that allows the customer to get the model replaced through LS's warranty program; most customers, with as much as players play today, will go through this warranty.

About the Brand

In 1842, J. Frederick Hillerich emigrated with his family from Baden-Baden, Germany to the United States. Eight years before, the 1834 Book of Sports had made its debut as the nation's first publication covering baseball. But when he arrived in Baltimore, J. Frederick Hillerich would never have dreamed of the future impact his family would have on America's favorite pastime.

After a short while, the Hillerichs moved to Louisville, where J. Fred started a woodworking shop in 1856. Two of his sons, Adam and John Andrew "Bud" were born in the United States and would later join their father in his business. By 1864 "J.F. Hillerich, Job Turning" was in operation and filled orders for businesses by custom-turning everything from balusters to bedposts.

The firm thrived, and by 1875 the little woodworking shop employed about 20 people. In 1880 Bud Hillerich, who was an amateur baseball player, became an apprentice in his father's shop. Young Bud made his own baseball bats along with bats for several of his teammates.

The debate over the origins of the first bat continues to generate controversy among baseball enthusiasts, but the younger Hillerich was most certainly involved in getting his father's business involved with what would become the company's signature item. According to company legend, the first bat was turned by Bud for Pete "The Old Gladiator" Browning in 1884. Browning was a star on Louisville's professional American Association team - the Eclipse. On a spring afternoon Bud, then seventeen, witnessed Browning break his favorite bat. Bud offered to make a bat for his hero, and Browning accepted. After the young wood shop apprentice lathed a quality stick from white ash, according to the story, Browning got three hits with it in the next game.

Louisville Slugger gloves are worn by more pitchers in Major League Baseball than any other glove.
