Louisville Slugger Omaha 516 Big Sug parent

Pros: I wanted to get a lighter bat for my son so I went with a 27/14 and the result was great! After using a similar bat in their District Tournament and winning this bat arrived for the State Tournament. Good pop and with the lighter weight there was better bat speed. The handle fit great in his hands and he says that it is really comfortable.

Cons: None.

Had better models Josh coach

Pros: The bat looks awesome and is really comfortable in the hands.

Cons: The bat has very poor pop. The ball does not come off the bat well at all. My son puts the ball to the fence even with his $40 Rawlings, and with this bat, even when he got some really solid knocks, the ball would only go about halfway in the outfield. He was really disappointed with this bat. We will be going back to Easton after this experience with Louisville Slugger.

Pros: Great Feel all around. The weight ratio is awesome, you can actually feel a difference between this and other bats. Love the site and the great return policy. We have returned a glove before and had no trouble and this bat we are keeping. I recommend this site to EVERYONE!!

Cons: None really, I mean for the price you get a great bat. Sure you can buy a couple cheap ones for the same price but wont get the performance. I know it's all up to the kid, but there is a lot to be said for the right tools for the job.

Paint coming off on the first day of use Cylon_68 coach

Pros: Seems to have decent pop and with it being a drop 13, the bat gets on the fast pitches quicker.

Cons: It arrived on a Wednesday and by just using it in batting practice prior to our game that same day (coach pitch slow balls in the batting cage); the paint was falling off. My son says there is a lot of vibration as well. I am sending it back.

Good bat, overshadowed by 517 Baseball Bats Are Cool Player

Pros: Has great pop, and a huge sweet spot. Used this in late middle school and early high school, and it launched the ball. Feels like most Omahas before 2020, average weight, and is versatile. Average swing weight allows it to be used by both contact and power hitters. Great durability overall, but a few issues also. Has a great sound, and let’s you know when you hit the sweet spot.

Cons: Like most Omahas, it will hurt the hands if you get too jammed. Durability is her ally good, but there are unpainted portions that can rust if it is not stored properly, damaging durability.

Questions and Answers

Have a question about the Louisville Slugger Omaha 516 Youth Baseball Bat: YBO5163? Ask our team of experts and they will respond within 24 hours.

How does this bat compare to the Demarini Voodoo Overlord? My son had been swinging an Easton Mako with okay results, but recently he has gone back to his cheap Rawlings Plasma one-piece alloy bat and has been crushing it! Josh
The 2016 Louisville Slugger Omaha 516 Youth Baseball Bat (YBO5163) would have a more similar feel to the Rawlings Plasma Youth Baseball Bat (YBPLMA) than the 2015 DeMarini Voodoo OVERLORD FT Youth Baseball Bat (DXVDL). The Voodoo is more end-loaded and is a two-piece design while the Omaha is balanced and a one-piece like the Plasma.
Patrick
What is the difference between St+20 and the 7u1 used for the 2016 Omaha? What is 7u1? And what is the difference in perform an and quality? allStarCA
The 2016 Louisville Slugger Omaha 516 Youth Baseball Bat (YBO5163) uses the new 7U1 Alloy. The difference between the 7U1 and the St+20 alloy is that the 7U1 will be lighter in weight giving the bat a more balanced feel. Performance and the quality will be the same between the two.
John
Is this bat composite? Manlyman
This 2016 Louisville Slugger Omaha 516 Youth Baseball Bat (YBO5163) will not be a composite bat since it features 7U1 alloy from the barrel to the handle.
Ben
My son is 57 inches and weighs 81 pounds. What size bat would you recommend? baseball mom
Given his height and weight, I would recommend going with the 30" of the 2016 Louisville Slugger Omaha 516 Youth (YBO5163).
Marcus
Is this bat balanced or end-loaded? David
This 2016 Louisville Slugger Omaha 516 Youth Baseball Bat (YBO5163) will come with a balanced swing weight that will make the bat feel like it has an even weight distribution throughout the entire bat.
Ben
My son weighs 50 pounds. What size bat would you recommend? arenteria26
The size model of the 2016 Louisville Slugger Omaha 516 Youth Baseball Bat (YBO5163) that we would recommend would be based on a combination of height and weight. We would need both to be able to accurately size your player.
Patrick
i just ordered and received our bat. Its a 30" 17oz. we have the 30 day try, it feels pretty light, if we try it and he feels he needs the 31" 18 oz can i send it back and get that. Tanner
The 2016 Louisville Slugger Omaha 516 Youth Baseball Bat (YBO5163) comes with a 30 day promise so if you are not completely satisfied with the bat within 30 days from purchase you can exchange it or send it back for a full refund of the purchase price. If you wanted to exchange it for the 31" 18 oz. model you would be able to do that.
Cameron
Would this be a good bat for me if I have used a big barrel? Bobby Beast
Typically going to a smaller barrel diameter like the 2 1/4 inch diameter on the 2016 Louisville Slugger Omaha 516 Youth Baseball Bat (YBO5163) from a larger one can present an adjustment that requires you to focus more on hitting the sweet spot. This bat is also lighter than most Senior League bats which would typically be a step backward for most players.
Patrick
My 7 year old is playing his first season of kid pitch little league. What size bat would be good for him? He is 46 inches tall and weighs 48 pounds. Baseball mom
Based upon your player's height and weight, I would recommend using a 27" 2016 Louisville Slugger Omaha 516 Youth Baseball Bat: YBO5163.
John P.
My 7 year old is playing his first season of kid pitch little league with a few other 7 year olds but mainly 8 and 9 year olds. What size bat would be good for him? He is 46 inches tall and weighs 48 pounds. Baseball mom
Based on your son's height and weight, we would recommend that he swing a 28" bat. As for the weight, I would base that off of what he currently swings. If his current bat appears too light, then he could afford to go up in weight. If his bat speed appears to lag, then I would be careful moving up too much in weight.
Nick
My son is 11 years old he weighs near 85lbs and is about 5' tall. Big Kid

Jason
I just bought this bat and it says 2015 alloy construction. Why does it say that if it is a 2016 model? JRJ
The "2015 Alloy Construction" is referring to the year the manufacturer switched over to the alloy design of the Omaha 515 and 516. The 2016 Louisville Slugger Omaha 516 Youth Baseball Bat: YBO5163 has new 7U1 alloy material that is specific to the 2016 model.
Angelique
My son is 4'4" and about 70 pounds. What size bat should he be using? dark54555
Based on your son's height and weight I would suggest a 29" 2016 Louisville Slugger Omaha 516 Youth Baseball Bat (YBO5163).

The 2016 Louisville Slugger Omaha 516 Youth Baseball Bat: YBO5163 will not have a significantly longer or smaller barrel when compared to the Louisville Catalyst.

Can't decide between 28 (15oz) or 29 (16oz)...My son is 7 years old 49" and approximately 50 lbs JR
Based on your son's height and weight, I would recommend that he swing 29" length. However, I would base that decision more off of his bat speed. I would not recommend losing bat speed, just to gain that extra inch of length.
Nick
My son is nine years old, 4' tall and roughly 65 lbs. What length bat would work best for him? Chipper
Based on your son's height and weight, we would recommend getting the 2016 Louisville Slugger Omaha 516 Youth Baseball Bat: YBO5163 in a 27 inch 14 ounce model.
Cameron
My son is 9 years old, 4'11", and 90-95 lbs. What size should he use? EagleBaseBall
Based upon your height and weight, we would make a general recommendation of going with this 2016 Louisville Slugger Omaha 516 Youth Baseball Bat (YBO5163) in a 30" length option. As long as you feel that your player will do well with the 17 oz weight of the 30" model, I would recommend that size option of this bat.
Ben
My son is 12 yrs old, almost 5" tall and 105 lbs. Not sure size of bat to get him. What would you suggest? Daniela
Based upon your player's height and weight, we would make a general recommendation of getting this 2016 Louisville Slugger Omaha 516 Youth Baseball Bat (YBO5163) in the 30" length. As long as your player can handle the 17 oz weight of the 30" option, I would recommend that size of this bat for him. I might also recommend checking with a coach to get their take on what size of bat would be good for him as well.
Ben
My son is 4'9" tall, 10 years old in Little League and weighs about 63 pounds. What size would you recommend? I get mixed suggestions from coaches, so I hope you can help. ConfusedMom
Based on your son's height and weight, I would recommend that he swing a 30" length. However, he could go down to a 29" if you feel that 30" is too long. He is right on the line of needing a 29" and 30" length.
Nick
My son is 8, He's 4"5 and weighs 89 pounds.. He currently swings a 28 inch 16 OZ Easton Bat that appears to be to light for him. I'm going to order this bat just not sure size? Jason Berner
Based on your son's height and weight, I would recommend that he swing a 30" length. That would be a 30" 17 oz. size in this particular model of the 2016 Louisville Slugger Omaha 516 Youth Baseball Bat: YBO5163.
Nick
Is the Omaha 516 youth bat actually certified in little league baseball? My son is seven and plays coach pitch and he might even play travel ball this summer. Luper
The 2016 Louisville Slugger Omaha 516 Youth Baseball Bat: YBO5163 is approved for play in Little League, Babe Ruth, Dixie, Pony, AABC, and USSSA.
John P.
we have a 2011 omaha. does this bat need "broke in"? it came right out of the package. brad piper
No, the 2016 Louisville Slugger Omaha 516 Youth Baseball Bat: YBO5163 will not require a "break in" period. This is due to the bat being a fully alloy construction and alloy bats being at peak performance out of the box.
Nick
My boy is 8 years old. Weights 50 lbs and a height of 52 inches. What size and weight bat would be best for his size? Thanks for your time. Wade
Based on your son's height and weight, I would recommend that he swing a 29" length. It is hard to indicate a weight without seeing him swing in person. This particular model of the 2016 Louisville Slugger Omaha 516 Youth Baseball Bat: YBO5163 in a 29" length, will feature a weight of 16 ounces.
Nick
My son is 8 and weighs about 55 lbs. He's been using an Easton TORQ, but he's just not getting the good performance off the bat. Which would be better: Prime or Omaha? JP
This 2016 Louisville Slugger Omaha 516 Youth Baseball Bat (YBO5163) is available with a -13 length-to-weight ratio. If you feel that size of bat would be best for your 8 year old, I would recommend looking into size options of that bat. For most 8 year olds, I would recommend a 28" bat. If you think a 28"/15 oz bat would be best, then I would recommend checking out this bat. The Youth option of the Prime 916 is available in the 28"/16 oz size, which may be an option to consider as well (currently at the time of your questions, we do not have that 28"/16 oz size of the Prime 916 in stock).

About the Brand

In 1842, J. Frederick Hillerich emigrated with his family from Baden-Baden, Germany to the United States. Eight years before, the 1834 Book of Sports had made its debut as the nation's first publication covering baseball. But when he arrived in Baltimore, J. Frederick Hillerich would never have dreamed of the future impact his family would have on America's favorite pastime.

After a short while, the Hillerichs moved to Louisville, where J. Fred started a woodworking shop in 1856. Two of his sons, Adam and John Andrew "Bud" were born in the United States and would later join their father in his business. By 1864 "J.F. Hillerich, Job Turning" was in operation and filled orders for businesses by custom-turning everything from balusters to bedposts.

The firm thrived, and by 1875 the little woodworking shop employed about 20 people. In 1880 Bud Hillerich, who was an amateur baseball player, became an apprentice in his father's shop. Young Bud made his own baseball bats along with bats for several of his teammates.

The debate over the origins of the first bat continues to generate controversy among baseball enthusiasts, but the younger Hillerich was most certainly involved in getting his father's business involved with what would become the company's signature item. According to company legend, the first bat was turned by Bud for Pete "The Old Gladiator" Browning in 1884. Browning was a star on Louisville's professional American Association team - the Eclipse. On a spring afternoon Bud, then seventeen, witnessed Browning break his favorite bat. Bud offered to make a bat for his hero, and Browning accepted. After the young wood shop apprentice lathed a quality stick from white ash, according to the story, Browning got three hits with it in the next game.

Louisville Slugger gloves are worn by more pitchers in Major League Baseball than any other glove.
