Great job on this redesigned alloy bat Big Daddy parent

Pros: My 8 year old is swinging the 29/19 and the ball has been jumping off this bat. Bat feels light and redesigned barrel is louisville's best yet. Bat is balanced and has an overall good feel. Exit speed has never been better for son.

Cons: More personal preference than anything but I think the grip could be less slick out of the box. Wrap design is awesome but seems somewhat slick

Too soon I guess Juan Alvarez parent

Pros: General look is great, but too early to assess the bat overall. My son is 12, 5' 3" and weighs 110. So he's small and skinny but has a really fast swing. I wanted a one piece aluminum, it is balanced but he's only had the bat for a few weeks and saw some shots to left but realistically it comes down to the hitter regardless of the bat. I know these websites promote crazy pot but if the hitter isn't a quick thinker or is a "safety first" type of person who doesn't pull the trigger on a pitch then it doesn't matter what kind of bat he has. Which is why I avoided the higher priced items, why buy a Lambo if you live in the wilderness. Parents, buy a bat a kid is comfortable with, light enough to swing and one they feel "one" with and work on their mental approach. Tired of seeing kids with a top heavy Mako and they go 0-3 with 3 K's every single game.

Cons: Doesnt have crazy pop, we've had the S1 and Combat. This one is equal to those.

Super BAT 12 yr old baller dad parent

Pros: Bat seems to have lots of pop right out or box! 12 yr old son 5'5" 115 lbs and swings the 31" 21 really well. The bat seems to be well balanced and so far no complaints of stingers! Like I said the bat has pop and the ball really jumps off the barrel.

Cons: After first cage session some of paint came off but not bad.

Questions and Answers

Have a question about the Louisville Slugger Omaha 516 Senior League Baseball Bat: SLO5160? Ask our team of experts and they will respond within 24 hours.

New bats look awesome!!! My son prefers the 716, when do those drop and will a senior league be available? RAH
The Select 716 Senior League bat is now currently available in two barrel sizes, and you can find them right here! - http://www.justbats.com/products/vendor~louisville%20slugger/?s=select%20716%20senior
Damon
How does this bat compare to the DeMarini NVS Vexxum? I am debating between these two. alumiu
The 2016 Louisville Slugger Omaha 516 Senior League Baseball Bat (SLO5160) is going to be a one-piece alloy bat whereas the DeMarini NVS Vexxum is going to be a two-piece hybrid alloy barrel and composite handle bat. The Vexxum being a two-piece will have more flex and is geared a little more towards contact hitters. The Omaha is going to be stiffer which is generally preferred by power hitters.
Jake
Do you have to break this bat in? ha
No, you do not need to break in the 2016 Louisville Slugger Omaha 516 Senior League Baseball Bat: SLO5160. The only bats that you will need to break in are full composite bats.
Cooper
Do you have this bat in a drop 5? 15
A -5 version of the 2016 Louisville Slugger Omaha 516 Senior League Baseball Bat (SLO5160) is not currently available.
Patrick
Which would be a better fit for my 10 year old son who is 5 foot 1 and weighs 120 pounds, the Catalyst SLCT152 or the Omaha 516? He has good power and is currently using a 31 inch -13 2 1/4 inch barrel diameter bat and is now allowed to move up to the 2 5/8 inch diameter. I am not sure if I should continue to go with the lightest bat or move to the -10. Is there something else you would recommend? Jim
Given what he had been using, it would be an easier transition to go with the lighter weight 2015 Louisville Slugger Catalyst Senior League Baseball Bat (SLCT152) to keep bat speed relatively similar. However, if your player is able to swing a -10 like the 2016 Louisville Slugger Omaha 516 Senior League Baseball Bat (SLO5160) well, it may be able to lead to better power production. Ultimately, it would come down to the strength of the player and his willingness to work with the heavier bat.
Patrick

Based on your son's height and weight, we would recommend getting the 2016 Louisville Slugger Omaha 516 Senior League Baseball Bat: SLO5160 in a 31 inch 20 ounce model. Your 13 year old may find this bat too short as well as light. Would recommend a 33 inch model for him.

This Omaha 516 has received many more reviews from customers when compared to the VELO and all of the 516's reviews have been positive in regard to performance and durability.
Ben
Can I use this bat in high school? beast
Since the 2016 Louisville Slugger Omaha 516 Senior League Baseball Bat: SLO5160 does not have the BBCOR stamp, it is not approved for play in high school baseball. You would have to go with the 2016 Louisville Slugger Omaha 516 BBCOR Baseball Bat: BBO5163.
Marcus
Would you recommend this bat for middle school baseball? webie
I would definitely recommend the 2016 Louisville Slugger Omaha 516 Senior League Baseball Bat: SLO5160 for middle school baseball.
Carter
Is this bat approved for the 13-15 Baseball Division of Babe Ruth leagues? RWR
Yes. Since this 2016 Louisville Slugger Omaha 516 Senior League Baseball Bat (SLO5160) has alloy barrel material, a 2 5/8" barrel diameter and USSSA 1.15 BPF certification; it will be legal for use in the 13-15 Division of Babe Ruth Baseball.
Ben
I'm 14 years old and playing 13 to 16 year old Babe Ruth baseball. I am 6' tall and weigh 140 lbs. What size would you recommend? Jj2k
Since you will be moving to high school soon, I would recommend using a BBCOR .50 baseball bat over a Senior League model like this 2016 Louisville Slugger Omaha 516 Senior League Baseball Bat (SLO5160). I would recommend looking at a BBCOR bat that is 32" length as long as you feel you can handle the 29 oz weight of the bat. A specific model I would suggest viewing is the 2016 Louisville Slugger Omaha 516 BBCOR Baseball Bat (BBO5163).
Ben
I'm deciding whether to get this bat or the Louisville Slugger Select 716. I heard the Select 716 has a heavier end. I'm 12 years old and I weigh 85 pounds. I'm playing in the Bronco division. What would you recommend? Joey
The Louisville Slugger Select 716 has a slightly end-loaded swing weight. End-loaded bats are typically preferred by power hitters. Given your age and weight, you would be better off with a balanced bat as it will be easier to swing. The 2016 Louisville Slugger Omaha 516 Senior League Baseball Bat: SLO5160 has a balanced weight distribution and is legal for use in the Bronco division of Pony league.
Angelique
My son is 8, weighs 82 lbs; good hitter. What type of bat would you recommend? Marco's Mom
There would be many good bats to consider for a player of your son's age and weight. Most younger players will benefit from a balanced bat, whether it be alloy or composite (most younger players seem to prefer composite). Also, a two-piece bat is a good route to take as these types of bats will be able to reduce vibration more so from off-centered hits compared to a one-piece bat.
Cameron
Is this bat new or used? best baseball player ever
The 2016 Louisville Slugger Omaha 516 Senior League Baseball Bat: SLO5160 is a new bat. There are some used options on our site but they will be labeled as used when selecting a size.
Cooper
Is there anyway I can get it an inch longer? calton
Unfortunately, the biggest size that the 2016 Louisville Slugger Omaha 516 Senior League Baseball Bat: SLO5160 comes in is a 32".
Cooper
How heavy does this feel? d
The 2016 Louisville Slugger Omaha 516 Senior League Baseball Bat: SLO5160 has a very well balanced feel to it.
Marcus
My son is 12 years old, 4'11" and almost 90 lbs. He used a 29" bat and grew out of it. He is looking to move up to a 30" or a 31". Would this be a good move? gigs
Based upon your player's height and weight, my general recommendation would be to get this 2016 Louisville Slugger Omaha 516 Senior League Baseball Bat (SLO5160) in the 30" length. As long as you feel the 30"/20 oz option of this 2016 Louisville Slugger Omaha 516 Senior League Baseball Bat (SLO5160) will be beneficial for use by your player, I would recommend that size of this bat (To answer the question directly, I think a move to a 30" model would be a good move).
Ben
What is a better bat: the DeMarini Voodoo Raw or the Louisville Slugger Omaha 516? gigs
Both options are very good bats. It depends on what type of hitter you are to determine which one is the best for you. The 2016 Louisville Slugger Omaha 516 Senior League Baseball Bat: SLO5160 has a balanced swing weight and it is typically a better option for a contact hitter. The DeMarini Voodoo Raw has an end loaded swing weight and it is typically better for a power hitter.

My son is 13 years old, 4'10" tall, and weighs 95 lbs. He's currently using a 29" -10 but has outgrown it. Would you recommend the 30" or 31" for him? Turn2
For a player of his size, I'd recommend going with the 2016 Louisville Slugger Omaha 516 Senior League Baseball Bat: SLO5160 in the 31" 21 oz. size.

Does the design of the bat affect the way it swings? Mason
Due to the one-piece, all-alloy build of this 2016 Louisville Slugger Omaha 516 Senior League Baseball Bat (SLO5160), this bat will feature a very balanced swing weight. That balanced feel makes it very easy to swing and it can be used by a contact or power hitter.
Ben
What is the difference between the SLO5160 and then SLO516X? Mason
The only difference between this 2016 Louisville Slugger Omaha 516 Senior League Baseball Bat (SLO5160) and the SLO516X is that this SLO5160 features a 2 5/8" barrel diameter and the SLO516X features a 2 3/4" barrel diameter.

The 2016 Louisville Slugger Omaha 516 Senior League Baseball Bat (SLO5160) is going to be a one piece aluminum bat.

My son weighs 85 lbs and is 4'6". He is moving up to a 50/70 field and currently swings a MAKO composite (2 1/4") pretty effectively. Will this bat have a similar feel in terms of swing weight? Is there a bat in this price range that might be better suited? Robby
Based upon your player's height and weight, I would make a general recommendation of getting this 2016 Louisville Slugger Omaha 516 Senior League Baseball Bat (SLO5160) in the 29" length as long as he can handle the subsequent 19 oz weight. The balanced feel of this bat will be pretty similar to the balanced weight of the MAKO, but depending upon the listed weight of the MAKO, this Omaha 516 could be heavier overall. If you are wanting a one-piece, all-alloy bat with a balanced swing weight and -10 length-to-weight ratio, I think this will be the best option available.

My 10 year old is 5'1" and weighs 89 lbs. Would you recommend the 30 or 31 inch for this bat? Lisa
We would typically recommend a 30" bat for someone the size of your son, although a 31" model could possibly work as well depending on things such as his strength, how far off the plate he stands, etc.

My son is 5'5.5" and weighs 132 lbs. What length and weight should he swing for junior high? joey oden
Based on his height and weight, we suggest a 31" or 32" model in the 2016 Louisville Slugger Omaha 516 Senior League Baseball Bat: SLO5160. Weight really depends on the players bat speed and strength, but typically you want to gradually work your way up in weight, as you are required to use a -3 BBCOR bat for high school.

My 13 year old is 4'11" and 85 pounds. He has been swinging a MAKO 30/19 pretty well but needs an alloy for 50/70 this spring. I'm not sure whether to go with the 30" or 31"? He has a pretty quick bat swing. Baseball mom
Based on your son's height and weight, we advise going with the 30" 2016 Louisville Slugger Omaha 516 Senior League Baseball Bat: SLO5160. The 31" could work for him but it would slow his swing down a little bit at first.

How does the 516 drop 5 feel compared to the 916 drop 5? We are thinking about using the 516 for a practice bat and the 916 for games and wanted to get your opinion if there would be a difference. Robert Alvey
The 2016 Louisville Slugger Omaha 516 Senior League Baseball Bat: SLO5160 will be slightly less balanced compared to the Prime 916. Would make a great option for a practice bat and would not cause any issues pertaining to swing mechanics.
Cameron
Is this allowed in Babe Ruth ball? h
No, the 2016 Louisville Slugger Omaha 516 Senior League Baseball Bat: SLO5160 is not approved for Babe Ruth ball because this model has a 2 5/8" barrel diameter. For a bat to be legal in Babe Ruth it must be a 2 1/4" barrel diameter (youth model), can not be longer than 33" in length, and must have the 1.15 BPF stamp on the bat

Between the SLO5160 and SLO516X 29 inch 19 ounce for a 4'4" 70 lbs 10U player without bat restrictions in tournament play - would the 2 3/4" be a better bat for him over the 2 5/8"? Ideally, the logic is bigger bat thus more area to make contact. So if people have the option between the 2 diameters, and there aren't any bat restrictions, why would they chose 2 5/8" over a 2 3/4"? APS
The advantage of a 2 3/4" barrel diameter over a 2 5/8", besides the obvious larger size and thus more surface area to square up the ball properly, are the thinner barrel walls. These thinner barrel walls will allow the 2 3/4" bats to offer more pop or trampoline effect over their 25/8" counterparts. The downside to the 2 3/4" bats though is the durability, especially if the 2 3/4" bat is in the hands of a stronger player or someone who is close or at 12 years of age. If this is the case then a 2 5/8" barrel diameter bat would be a better option. Although these bats have thicker barrel walls and will more than likely limit the power performance, they will not be as susceptible to denting or cracking within a short period of time.

About the Brand

In 1842, J. Frederick Hillerich emigrated with his family from Baden-Baden, Germany to the United States. Eight years before, the 1834 Book of Sports had made its debut as the nation's first publication covering baseball. But when he arrived in Baltimore, J. Frederick Hillerich would never have dreamed of the future impact his family would have on America's favorite pastime.

After a short while, the Hillerichs moved to Louisville, where J. Fred started a woodworking shop in 1856. Two of his sons, Adam and John Andrew "Bud" were born in the United States and would later join their father in his business. By 1864 "J.F. Hillerich, Job Turning" was in operation and filled orders for businesses by custom-turning everything from balusters to bedposts.

The firm thrived, and by 1875 the little woodworking shop employed about 20 people. In 1880 Bud Hillerich, who was an amateur baseball player, became an apprentice in his father's shop. Young Bud made his own baseball bats along with bats for several of his teammates.

The debate over the origins of the first bat continues to generate controversy among baseball enthusiasts, but the younger Hillerich was most certainly involved in getting his father's business involved with what would become the company's signature item. According to company legend, the first bat was turned by Bud for Pete "The Old Gladiator" Browning in 1884. Browning was a star on Louisville's professional American Association team - the Eclipse. On a spring afternoon Bud, then seventeen, witnessed Browning break his favorite bat. Bud offered to make a bat for his hero, and Browning accepted. After the young wood shop apprentice lathed a quality stick from white ash, according to the story, Browning got three hits with it in the next game.

Louisville Slugger gloves are worn by more pitchers in Major League Baseball than any other glove.
