By design, the 2016 Easton MAKO Senior League Baseball Bat (SL16MK8) is a balanced bat. However, players transitioning from a lighter weight bat to this may feel that the bat seems to feel end-loaded. Those experienced with an actually end-loaded -8 would not.

The 2016 Easton MAKO XL Senior League Baseball Bat (SL16MK8) is not legal for play in the 13-15 Division of Babe Ruth. The bat is fully composite and features the USSSA 1.15 BPF stamp. It is not a -3 and it does not feature the BBCOR certification stamp that would make it legal.

The 2016 Easton MAKO XL Senior League Baseball Bat: SL16MK8 is going to be a -8 and have an end-loaded weight distribution while the 2016 Easton MAKO Senior League Baseball Bat: SL16MK10 is going to be a -10 and feature a balanced swing weight. Those are going to be the two main differences between the two baseball bats.

The differences between the 2016 Easton MAKO XL Senior League Baseball Bat: SL16MK8 and the Easton XL1 Senior League -8 Baseball Bat: SL15X18 will be the following: MAKO XL will feature TCT Thermo Composite Technology compared to IMX Advanced with the XL1 and the MAKO will have a Hyperskin grip while the XL1 will have a performance diamond grip. Other than that, both bats will feature the end-loaded swing weight with the two-piece technology.

The 2016 Easton MAKO XL Senior League Baseball Bat: SL16MK8 is pretty hot out of the wrapper and does not really require a break-in period. It is still typically best to take about 50-100 swings off a tee though.

Based upon your player's height and weight, I would make a general recommendation of getting a 32" model of a Youth Big Barrel/Senior League baseball bat. However, if you guys feel more comfortable with a 31"/23 oz option of a bat, I think that size will be fine. This 2016 Easton MAKO XL Senior League Baseball Bat (SL16MK8) is available in that 31"/23 oz size and has a bit of an end-loaded swing weight. As long as you feel that your player can handle that end-loaded 23 oz weight, I think a 31" model will be excellent for you.

All of the options you have listed are good options. If you want an end loaded bat I would I would go with the 2016 Easton MAKO XL Senior League Baseball Bat or the 2016 Easton XL3 Senior League Baseball Bat: SL16X35. If you like a more balanced swing weight I would go with the 2016 Easton MAKO Senior League Baseball Bat or the 2016 Easton S3 Senior League Baseball Bat. Both S3 models are aluminum and both Makos are going to be composite. What material you want is going to be completely your preference.

As for the weight, if your son is entering 7th grade, we would recommend getting a drop 8 bat (23 ounces) to help prepare for the BBCOR era in high school. As for the bat to select, the 2016 Easton MAKO XL Senior League Baseball Bat: SL16MK8 is an end-loaded bat which would be a great bat for a power type hitter. If the player is more of a contact type, then a balanced bat would probably be better such as the Easton MAKO (XL always means end-loaded with Easton bats).

Leagues playing under USA standards will require a bat with the USABat stamp. The 2016 Easton MAKO XL Senior League Baseball Bat: SL16MK8 does not feature this stamp, only the USSSA thumb print stamp. Bats that will comply with the USABat standard will be available in September of this year.
