The 2016 COMBAT Portent G4 BBCOR Baseball Bat: PG4AB103 is going to feature variable stiffness technology for optimum barrel compression on contact while the 2015 COMBAT Portent G3 BBCOR Baseball Bat w/ Lizard Skin Grip: PG3AB103 will not. Other than that, these two bats are extremely similar and very comparable.

2015 Easton S1 BBCOR Baseball Bat (BB15S1) would compare very similarly to one another in those aspects. The preference would come down to whether you like a one-piece or two-piece design more.

My son's trainer had asked to see if we can acquire a 2015 Rawlings VELO. I'm assuming it's the BBRVB model. Composite vs. alloy? Don't composites have more pop than alloy? Oh, and the price point for this COMBAT bat is less than the VELO as well. CompBat Dad
There is no distinct advantage of using composite over alloy. When it comes to BBCOR bats, these two different barrel constructions will produce similar results. Typically, composite bats have a tendency of being better balanced and can feature a slightly larger sweet spot. Composite bats will require a break-in period (around 150-200 swings off the tee and/or soft toss, rotating barrel a 1/4" after each swing), are typically less durable in colder weather but slightly better in warmer weather (under 70 degrees Fahrenheit is not ideal for use) and will make more of a wood bat sound on contact. With an alloy bat, these bats are going to be at their best right out of the wrapper and will gradually lose their pop overtime, are going to be more durable in colder weather and will make the traditional "ping" sound. These bats are likely to dent whereas a composite bat is likely to crack. It all boils down to preference with regards to barrel construction. As for the price point difference of the 2016 COMBAT Portent G4 BBCOR Baseball Bat: PG4AB103 versus the Rawlings VELO BBCOR Baseball Bat: BBRVB boils down to supply and demand as well as the price point at which we were able to secure both of these bats. Both are going to be balanced, one-piece bats. The 2016 COMBAT Portent G4 BBCOR Baseball Bat: PG4AB103 will feature a composite design while the Rawlings VELO BBCOR Baseball Bat: BBRVB will be an alloy design.

I know this bat is discontinued, but what is the primary difference between this PG4, the MAXUM and the Vigor? (I am looking for a 29"/19 oz bat with the 2 3/4" barrel diameter). Jake
All of the bats being considered are pretty similar as the Vigor, MAXUM and this 2016 COMBAT Portent G4 BBCOR Baseball Bat (PG4AB103) are single-piece, all-composite bats. The MAXUM is the only model that really differentiates itself from the other two bats as it has an extended barrel length that allows for a longer sweet spot. This Portent model is actually a BBCOR .50 bat and will not be available in the -10 length-to-weight ratio and 2 3/4" barrel diameter. The model I would recommend viewing with the -10 length-to-weight ratio and 2 3/4" barrel diameter is the COMBAT MAXUM (MAXSL210).

Both the 2016 COMBAT Portent G4 BBCOR Baseball Bat (PG4AB103) and the 2016 COMBAT MAXUM BBCOR Baseball Bat (MAXAB103) are going to be very similar. The 2016 COMBAT Portent G4 has a bit shorter barrel and a bit less balanced feel than the 2016 COMBAT MAXUM.

The main difference between the two is the type of composite that they use. They are different composite materials. The G4 also features Ultra-Premium Lizard Skins Grip.

Based upon your player's height and weight, I would make a general recommendation of getting a bat in the 31" or 32" length. The -5 bat that your player checked out with his coach will differ from this 2016 COMBAT Portent G4 BBCOR Baseball Bat (PG4AB103) because this Portent has a -3 length-to-weight ratio. As well, the -5 bat features USSSA 1.15 certification that allows higher performance than the Portent G4 (due to the G4's BBCOR certification).

COMBAT has not done a lot to specifically differentiate between this 2016 COMBAT Portent G4 BBCOR Baseball Bat (PG4AB103) and the Vigor. Both bats are one-piece, all-composite and feature a long barrel length. From some testimony I have heard, it has been expressed that some individuals feel that the Vigor may feel slightly more end-loaded than the Portent.

The 2016 COMBAT Portent G4 BBCOR Baseball Bat: PG4AB103 will be closer to the actual listed weight of the bat (about 1 ounce over) compared to the Rawlings VELO (about 1.1 ounces heavier than listed weight). Comparing the two from a feel standpoint, the two bats are too close to point out which one is more balanced. Would say both of these bats will have an overall balanced feel.
