While it is true that all BBCOR certified bats like the 2016 COMBAT MAXUM BBCOR Baseball Bat (MAXAB103) will have the same maximum level of performance, the difference, and what you end up paying for, is the feel and durability of the bat. Features like flex, sting protection, barrel size, and balance all play into how a bat will feel to the player and how comfortable the swing will be. If they are all the same in terms of maximum performance potential at their best, you will want that best level to last as long and be as consistent as it can. Composite material or high level alloy bats tend to maintain their performance level longer which gives you more sustained and consistent performance of the bat.

The 2016 COMBAT MAXUM BBCOR Baseball Bat (MAXAB103) and the 2016 Easton MAKO BBCOR Baseball Bat (BB16MK) are different by design mainly in the flex of the bat. The MAKO is a two-piece design which will flex a bit more and provide a whipping motion that can lead to better bat speed while the MAXUM will be stiffer and provide more control while still having low swing weight and a large sweet spot.

For a player that prefers an end-loaded bat, then the DeMarini Voodoo Raw BBCOR DXVDC would be the better bat to consider over the 2016 COMBAT MAXUM BBCOR Baseball Bat: MAXAB103. The advantage of the end-loaded bat is the greater mass that will be in the sweet spot. Although the sweet spot would be smaller in the DeMarini compared to the Combat (balanced bats will have bigger sweet spot but mass will be less concentrated) the additional mass would allow for more distance on hits squared up within this sweet spot compared to a balanced bat.

The 2016 COMBAT MAXUM BBCOR Baseball Bat: MAXAB103 is a one-piece fully composite bat that will require a break-in period prior to the bat being ready for game play. We recommend using this bat off a tee or soft toss for 150-200 swings, rotating the barrel a 1/4" after each swing. According to customers, this bat has minimal vibration. Typically, a two-piece bat will have the optimal anti-vibration technology as the connection point will be able to redirect vibration from off-centered hits more than a one-piece bat but thus far it doesn't seem that this one-piece COMBAT has vibration issues.

The main difference between the two is the MAKO will be a two-piece fully composite bat while the MAXUM is a one-piece. With that said, the MAKO will have a tendency to be a little more forgiving when you hit a ball off the end or towards the handle (less stinging/vibration) compared to the MAXUM.

That being said, this 2016 COMBAT MAXUM BBCOR Baseball Bat (MAXAB103) has actually been rated pretty well at JustBats by customers and I would recommend it highly. I might give the CF8 a slight edge in regard to ratings, but this MAXUM also features a 30 day trial period. That trial period allows customers to purchase the bat and use it, then if they decide it is not the bat for them within 30 days from the purchase date, it can be sent back to us for a full refund or exchange. If you are required to use a BBCOR certified bat, then the 2016 COMBAT MAXUM BBCOR Baseball Bat: MAXAB103 would work for you, but I would suggest the 30" size. If you are not required to use a BBCOR bat, I would suggest looking at a -5 bat like the 2016 COMBAT MAXUM -5 Senior League Baseball Bat: MAXSL105 in a 31" or 32" size.

As of 2/3/17 we only have the 2016 COMBAT MAXUM BBCOR Baseball Bat: MAXAB103 available in either a 33 or 34 inch model. Since this bat is a closeout option we do not expect to get any more additional sizes in.

I'm a Jr. (5'11, 150 lbs) in high school and I have been swinging a 32" 29 oz Vexxum the past few seasons but it is time for an upgrade. As you only have 33" and 34" inch in stock do you think a 33 would be reasonable? Matt Szuba
Yes, a 33" would be reasonable at your size, and the 2016 COMBAT MAXUM BBCOR Baseball Bat: MAXAB103 is well balanced, so you shouldn't have any issues.

My son is 6 foot 4 and a half 170lb junior. He hit for contact when he was younger but has developed into a power hitter with his growth spurt. What size should he be looking at and should he consider the Maxum? AG
We would recommend a 33" or 34" length of bat for someone his size. The Maxum is certainly a quality bat that you could look at purchasing, yes.

Based upon your player's height and weight, our JustBats' Bat Coach would make a general recommendation of getting this 2016 COMBAT MAXUM BBCOR Baseball Bat (MAXAB103) in the 33" length. However, if you feel your player is ready for a 34" bat, you could certainly go with that size of bat. I bet he will be able to handle the size eventually if he is not quite ready for it yet.

The 2016 COMBAT MAXUM BBCOR Baseball Bat: MAXAB103 has been lowered in price due to a few factors. (1) This is a closeout model from COMBAT (2) COMBAT is no longer making baseball bats (3) we were able to purchase a large quantity of their remaining inventory at a discount and thus have passed this on to our customers and (4) the only size we have left are 34 inch models which are not as prevalent in terms of demand.
