Ready for Lift Off! Rob parent

Pros: COMbat has added another bat to the already loaded arsenal. If you are confused as to which bat to purchase just like me, then let me make the choice simple. The Combat Portent is an absolute beast! I purchased this bat for my 7 year old son who plays travel baseball. Through the spring and summer seasons he used an Easton Reflex 27" 13 oz. He out grew the bat and I decided to go with a COMbat based on the success my oldest son had with the B4. After a brief break-in period of 100-150 hits off the tee and soft toss, his first hit with the bat was a frozen rope into the mid outfield. With his Reflex he would barely make it to the outfield grass. Now his confidence is soaring and at an all time high. Thank you COMbat.

Cons: None, have only owned the bat for a short period.

Perfect for my son 1bigkid coach

Pros: My 11yr old has the 31/21 portant and this one the 31/19. He uses the -12 almost all of the time. After several 100 soft tosses this bat seems very hot and ready to go. Worked great for winter ball. My son was able to keep his hands back longer then the heavier endloaded bats and had plenty of good rips into right field and when he was pitched inside he roped it down 3rd. He was able to make solid contact off the nastiest of little league pitchers just because of his quicker hands. Great bat very pleased to have one.

Cons: Smaller sweet spot then other bats but not by much.

Once again well done ComBAT Jay B coach

Pros: Last season we had the 28-16 B4 ComBAT and my son had a great season with it, the key is to break the bat in with lots of tee work, that bat still has lots of life left to it. This season we are going with the ComBAT 28-16 Portent, the only difference I have seen so far is the barrel on the Portent is thinner than that of the B4, maybe 1/2-3/4 of an inch in diameter. So far with 250 +swings off Tee (so far) this bat is every bit as good as the B4, lots of pop and my son loves it. Ball jumps off bat.

Cons: None

Portent Amazes Mike Leary parent

Pros: Just got this bat for my 12yo son last week. He has had other composite bats in the past -- Demarini CF5 and Easton S1. The challenge he's had has been balance in the bat and the amount of "break-in". The Portent really only required about 200-250 tee swings. First game it was evident that the bat had pop. My son said that what noticed most was the great feel of the bat through the swing path. It's not end-loaded and it feels light in his hands. The next big thing for him was the amazing feel even on hits that aren't solid in the sweet spot. Lastly, he said that the bat isn't as "stiff" on impact -- he remarked that is felt way better than his CF5 and reminded him of the old Omen bats.

Cons: No cons to report -- haven't had it long enough yet.

Amazing drop 12 bat 1bigkid coach

Pros: Once this bat breaks in it's scary how fast the ball comes off the bat. For -12 the power behind this bat is crazy. The sound is different once it's broken in. I've seen coaches and umps check the bat just because of the sound it makes. Great durability had it for winter and spring and it's still going strong. Have an older b4 that we use for the cages and that is still solid. I'm sold on COMbats and I'd buy another.

Cons: Not sure if it's just my portant or all of them but it took forever to break in. It literally took 1000+ hits to break in but once it did I could hardly believe the difference day and night.

First Combat ER parent

Pros: My son loves this bat. Still working through the break-in period, but overall very stable. Ball pops off the bat with little to no effort on his swing. He's 8yrs old and a speed hitter with average power. Hitting more line drives lately with lots of confidence behind his swings. Moved from an Easton Mako (28x18) which was slightly heavy for his size. No sting whatsoever.

Cons: Break-in period on composite bats can be a bit tedious.

Very solid, quality bat APR parent

Pros: My son has just broken in this bat and the sound is fantastic. The extended barrel has allowed him to keep a larger sweet spot on the ball and hit line drives using the whole field.

Cons: Quite a bit of vibration if hit towards the end of the bat.

Rookie year 8U Homerun hitter Robert parent

Pros: Great weight distribution Good pop No vibration I swear that my son was the only "Small" bat barrel hitter in the league. Most kids were hitting the 2-5/8" bats that were very short in length. I started working with him 2 months before the season started and he finally put one over the centerfield fence in the playoffs 4 months after his first swing at a baseball. He and 3 other kids were the only ones to accomplish this. I am not one to believe that the bat that creates the hitter but I would agree that the quality of this bat did have a big impact on his mechanics.

Cons: Shows wear signs easily (Not really a con though)

Questions and Answers

Have a question about the COMBAT Portent Youth Baseball Bat: PORYB112? Ask our team of experts and they will respond within 24 hours.

Does it have to be broken in? If so, how many hits will it take to break-in? gocombat
The 2014 COMBAT Portent: PORYB112 Youth is a composite bat and will require a break-in period. We recommend 150-200 swings off of a tee or soft toss with real baseballs. Start the swing at 50% power and steadily work your way up. The barrel should be rotated a 1/4" after each swing to assure complete barrel coverage.
John H
Is this bat the replacement for the B4 youth? Same balance and stiffness...? I am assuming the B4 is not legal next year as it only has the words 1.15 instead of the 1.15 shield. bill
This 2014 COMBAT Portent: PORYB112 Youth would be the model that replaced the B4 Youth B4YB1. Both are balanced, one-piece composite bats. As far as the stamp goes, your league should be just fine with the B4. Little League and other Youth Leagues only require the bat say BPF 1.15, not necessarily the new BPF 1.15 stamp. I would check with a league official, but the B4 with the 2 1/4" barrel should still be approved for play.
Mac
Is it approved for Dixie youth? ja
The 2014 COMBAT Portent: PORYB112 Youth is approved for Dixie youth baseball.
Kara
What is the difference between the Portent and Pure Gear -12? Tom
The 2014 COMBAT Portent: PORYB112 Youth is made through a new process with a newer material. The voids in between the composite material have been filled for a stronger barrel and better performance. The Gear technology in the Pure Gear allows the barrel walls to be a bit thinner, which provides more trampoline effect and increases the sweet spot, but still meets performance regulations. Aside from those two differences, the bats are very comparable in design and feel.
Mac
What is the difference between the COMBAT Portent and the new COMBAT Wanted? Which one is a more balanced swing weight? RBI
The 2014 COMBAT Portent: PORYB112 Youth is a one-piece composite design. The COMBAT Wanted is a two-piece composite design. The COMBAT Portent and the COMBAT Wanted are similar in swing weight.
Kara

Damon
I'm looking for the largest length to weight ratio bat with the longest barrel. Any suggestions? kaukris1
This 2014 COMBAT Portent: PORYB112 Youth is one of the better options for that criteria. I would also suggest the Louisville Slugger Vertex: YB13V or DeMarini Voodoo: DXVDL if you were looking for a -13 model with a large sweet spot.
Mac

The 2014 COMBAT Portent (PORYB112) is going to be a balanced design.

The 2014 COMBAT Portent (PORYB112) Youth and the COMBAT Pure Gear (PUREYB1) -12 Youth are both great bats with excellent pop. The Portent has an extended barrel and has a slightly larger barrel.

What is the difference between a one-piece design and a two-piece design? Bone-A
The 2014 COMBAT Portent (PORYB112) features one-piece design. Typically, power hitters tend to prefer a one-piece design since it provides a stiffer feel when the bat makes contact with the barrel. A contact hitter tends to prefer a two-piece design since it allows for a little more flex. We wrote a great article on our blog about the differences between a one-piece and two-piece. Check it out here: http://goo.gl/8z5vLa

What's the major differences in this bat and the 2014 Rev-X yrvx12 Dad
The 2014 COMBAT Portent: PORYB112 Youth and 2014 Miken REV-EX: YRVX12 Youth are both going to be one piece composite designs. The portent is going to have single wall construction, extended barrel and be pretty sturdy. The Miken REV-EX is going to feel lightweight and will provide a smoother swing.

The only difference What is the difference between the two bats is that the COMBAT Portent (PORYB110) has a -10 drop and the COMBAT Portent (PORYB112) has a -12 drop.
Damon
How does it compare to the COMBAT Pure Gear (PUREYB1) -12 Youth? Dean
The 2014 COMBAT Portent: PORYB112 Youth will not have the gear technology of the COMBAT Pure Gear (PUREYB1) -12 Youth which extends the sweet spot, but will have an extended barrel which also helps extend the sweet spot.
Damon
My son currently plays with an Easton 27" 14 oz. Reflex. He's about 4' tall, 45 lbs. I was looking at the Portent or the Wanted WANYB112. Does one have a lighter swing weight than the other? We tried the new DeMarini Voodoo Overlord 28" 15 oz. but he wasn't comfortable with it. brad
The 2014 COMBAT Portent (PORYB112) is a one-piece bat similar to the Easton Reflex. The 2014 COMBAT Wanted (WANYB112) is a two-piece design and is designed for a contact hitter. Both bats are very balanced bats and are very high performing.
Kara
What is the difference between the COMBAT Portent and the COMBAT Wanted? I understand one is a "two-piece" and the other is a "one-piece". How does the structure influence the bat? Kent
The 2014 COMBAT Portent Youth Baseball Bat: (PORYB112) incorporates a one-piece structure. Generally, a one-piece design tends to be a little bit stiffer, and is usually preferred by power hitters. The 2014 COMBAT Wanted Youth Baseball Bat: (WANYB112) features a two-piece design, and this structure provides players with added flex through the zone. Therefore, this design tends to be preferred by contact players. Ultimately, the structure and feel will be one of the biggest differences between these two models.
Merritt
After 150 soft tosses and 75 pitches thrown at my son, the bat still seems to have trouble launching ball very far. Could you help us on what to try next? gary
In general, composite barrel bats like the 2014 COMBAT Portent Youth Baseball Bat (PORYB112) tend to get hotter as they break-in. The bat should be starting to get broken in given the process you already tried but you may want to do a bit more soft toss while rotating the barrel to be sure. If it is still seeing issue, you may want to contact the manufacturer about a possible factory defect.
Patrick

Liz
Which is a better bat; the 2014 Portent or the Wanted? Which is hotter? strike
At their peak, the 2014 COMBAT Portent Youth Baseball Bat (PORYB112) and the 2014 COMBAT Wanted Youth Baseball Bat (WANYB112) will perform similarly and they are both good options. The major difference would be the feel with the Wanted having more flex and more sting and vibration protection due to the two-piece design. The Portent will have a stiffer feel offering more control. The preference would come down to which style you like the feel of better.
Patrick
This looks similar to the B2 Reloaded. Is it the replacement or is it different? L.A.
Yes, the 2014 COMBAT Portent Youth Baseball Bat (PORYB112) has replaced the older B2 reloaded models. They both feature the same balanced swing weight and one-piece composite design.
Tessa
