Big Barrels and Big Performance!

One of the most common questions we receive at JustBats.com is, “what is the difference between Junior Big Barrel and Youth Big Barrel?” This is a great question and can be confusing to players or parents shopping for a new bat. Don’t worry, we’re here to help!

Junior Big Barrel bats most commonly have a 2 ¾” barrel diameter with length to weight ratios between -10 and -12. They are designed for use by players between the ages of 4-8. Junior Big Barrel bats are designed for use in Coach Pitch leagues only. The reason for this is that the barrel walls are extremely thin. If they are used in Kid Pitch or Machine Pitch leagues, they have a much higher likelihood of becoming defective (dents/cracks). The 2 ¾” barrel, combined with the light weight, make them perfect bats for kids just starting to develop their swing. Take a look at some of our most popular Junior Big Barrel bats.

Youth Big Barrel bats most commonly have a 2 ⅝” barrel diameter with length to weight ratios between -5 and -10. They are designed for use by players between the ages of 8-13. Youth Big Barrel bats are often referred to as “Senior League” bats. These bats are used as a stepping stone to the Adult BBCOR bats used in high school and college that have a -3 length to weight ratio. Combat Swinging Tigers Roar into WCWS.

The Louisiana State Tigers secured their spot in the Woman’s College World Series, with a little help from Combat.

May 28th, 2012. Kent, WA – The Lady Tigers from Louisiana State University are on their way to one of the greatest NCAA events of the year; the Woman’s Softball College World Series in Oklahoma City where they will face the top-ranked Cal Golden Bears in their opening game. LSU defeated Missouri 3-1 Sunday night to cement their place in the final.

LSU coach Beth Torina could not have asked for a better first season with the team. The Tigers are peaking at the right time and are ready for this next hurdle. The goal from day one was to make the postseason and that is just what they have done. “There is trust in each other and in the coaching staff and it’s really paying off,” added some of the LSU players..

Against Missouri in the decisive third game, the turning point came in the bottom of the third – down 1-0, the Tigers came up with a bases-loaded double that plated three runs and LSU never looked back.

Coach Torina wasn’t the only one supporting her team all season – LSU’s equipment supplier, Combat Sports has also been rooting for the softball team since before the season began. Early on, coach Torina and Combat’s engineers sat down to create the Avaritia. It is Combat’s first two-piece fast-pitch bat and has been flying off the shelves since it was released in November.

LSU’s line-up of North American-made Combat Avaritia bats were seen during the team’s season and will be featured nation-wide throughout the WCWS – further promoting Combat’s passion for the game and philosophy of “for players, by players.”

Hitters, Sluggers, Homerun Champs, Oh My!

I had the privilege of tagging along with USSSA and some of the top manufacturers in the game to this years Majors Softball Slugfest. It’s not everyday you get the chance to go behind the scenes and see the action.

This event is put on every year by USSSA at the Men’s World Tournament at ESPN World Wide Sports in Orlando, FL. It’s a great opportunity for manufacturers to get out there and showcase their products, as well as for people to jump in the cage and try out new bats.

A line of batting cage nets set the stage to give people the opportunity to try new bats and get a feel for different products. It was never a still moment as people lined up to take their turn.

Combat showed off their new Avarice which was a big hit. Softball greats Johnny McGraw and Scott Brown endured the heat to take turns feeding the pitching machine as players jumped in to take some cuts.

One cage over players and fans gathered around some of the biggest names in Softball today, Worth’s BJ Fulk and Greg Connell. As these two guys greeted people with smiles, they signed autographs and snapped pictures with everyone who came their way. What an opportunity for people to talk to not only the manufacturers but to talk to the players who swing these bats everyday. Not to mention, getting advice from the Pro’s themselves….you can’t beat that!

Slugfest is a must! Next year go out and talk to the manufacturers, swing some bats, and meet some of the greatest players in the game today.
