Baseball Bat Duel: Easton S Series vs. Easton XL Series

eastonxlvssseriesWhen it comes to baseball bats, Easton is royalty. For more than 40 years, Easton has been an industry leader in developing innovative new technologies and outfitting ballplayers with high-performing bats. Today, we take a look at the 2013 Easton S Series and XL Series and compare their differences and why they might be the right bat for you.

Easton S Series:

The Easton S Series is a great bat for contact hitters. It has a balanced swing weight, so it’ll help hitters who have trouble generating their own power to increase their bat speed. There are four designs in the S Series: The S1, S2, S3 and S4.

The S1 is a two-piece bat with a composite handle and barrel and available in BBCOR, Senior League, Youth and Jr. Big Barrel designs. The S2 is a two-piece hybrid with a composite handle and alloy barrel and available in BBCOR, Senior League and Youth designs. The S3 is a one-piece alloy and available in BBCOR, Senior League and Youth designs. The S4 is a one-piece alloy with a 2 ½” barrel diameter and available in BBCOR.

Easton XL Series:

The Easton XL Series is an ideal bat for a power hitter who can generate their own bat speed. It has a slight end load and an extended barrel which creates an incredibly large sweet spot. There are three designs in the XL Series: XL1, XL2 and XL3.

The XL1 is a two-piece bat with a composite barrel and handle and available in BBCOR, Senior League and Youth designs. The XL2 is a two-piece hybrid bat with a composite handle and alloy barrel and available in BBCOR, Senior League and Youth designs. The XL3 is a one-piece alloy and available in BBCOR, Senior League and Youth designs.

So the choice is yours. Two very high-performing lines from Easton that will take your game to new levels. You can find them all at JustBats.com where we have a 24/7 in-house customer service team who are happy to answer all your questions and give you advice on which Easton is best for you.

Breaking In Your Composite Baseball Bat

compositebatbreakinWith the season fast approaching, you’re probably shopping around for a new bat. When you’re considering all of your options, there is a simple but important thing to remember: alloy and composite materials are different. An alloy bat is game ready the day you buy it. However, composite bats need to be broken in to reach their maximum potential.

Breaking in your composite bat is fun, easy and can be done in about an hour. To properly break in your composite bat, we recommend taking 150-200 swings playing soft toss or off a tee using real baseballs. Begin swinging at 40% power and work our way up to full strength as you get closer to 200 swings. It’s also important to rotate the bat ¼” after each swing to ensure that you get complete barrel coverage. Never break in your bat in a cage that uses yellow dimpled balls. Yellow dimpled balls are very dense and can damage your bat and decrease its lifespan.

Here is a quick video on how to break in your composite bat.

Send us a video of you breaking in your composite bat and you could win a $300 JustBats.com gift card. Do you have some cool game pictures? Send those to us too for a chance to win a $25 JustBats.com gift card. Click HERE to submit your entrees.

Wood Baseball Bat Series: Part 1

Some of the biggest mysteries in the baseball bat industry involve wood bats. Which type of wood bat is highest performing? Which type of wood is the most durable? Which type of wood feels the lightest? Although there are no clear-cut answers, JustBats.com will provide details for each type of wood so you can determine which wood bat is right for you. There are four main types of wooden baseball bats: Ash, Maple, Bamboo and Birch. Lets take a look at what makes each type of wood unique.

Most Ash bats are made from White Ash trees. It’s the lightest of the four main types of wood because of its porous wood grain. The lightweight nature of Ash helps a hitter increase bat speed. Ash wood bats are softer than other wood bats, which provides a more comfortable feel on contact. The downside of Ash is its lack of durability. For this reason, Ash has a tendency to flake quicker than other types of wood.

The majority of Maple bats are made from Sugar or Rock Maple trees. Maple has very few pores which makes it harder than other woods. Because Maple is so hard, the bats tend to have more pop which makes them popular among professional players. The downside to Maple is it retains moisture, making it very dense and heavier than other types of wood.

Unlike traditional wood bats, bamboo bats are strips of bamboo pressed together to create billets of wood which are then used to create the bats. Bamboo bats are the most durable bats on the market and extremely lightweight. Because bamboo bats are so durable and lightweight, they are popular with younger players and players who are using wood bats for the first time. Since they are not created from a single piece of wood, they do require BBCOR certification for players who are in high school or college.

Most Birch bats are created from Yellow Birch trees. Birch bats are increasing in popularity because of their durability and hardness. Birch is more flexible than other types of wood which helps create a whip-like action. That whip action makes Birch easier to swing and less likely to break. Birch is lighter than Maple with similar pop and performance.

Stay tuned next week for the second installment in this wood bat blog series. In the meantime, let us know which type of wood bat you think is the best and be sure to keep submitting your pictures and videos in our weekly Gift Card Give Away for chances to win a $25 or $300 JustBats.com gift cards.

2013 DeMarini Slow Pitch Bats

What are some qualities that you look for in a slow pitch softball bat? Pop? Durability? A game-ready feel? The confidence that you have the right weapon in your hands when you step into the box can make all the difference between track power and circling the bases. Gain that confidence with one of these new bats from DeMarini’s 2013 slow pitch lineup.

2013 DeMarini Flipper

The Flipper is new from DeMarini for 2013 and only approved for ASA play. It’s a two-piece hybrid design with Divergence barrel technology, which is two layers of composite with an air gap sandwiched in between. This creates an incredibly responsive sweet spot specifically designed to crush the new ASA .52/300 balls. The Flipper’s SC4 alloy handle provides an incredibly stiff feel, almost like you’re swinging a one-piece bat. The Flipper is catching the attention of power and contact hitters alike, but don’t just take our word for it. Check out this review from Patrick:

2013 DeMarini The ONE FU-Dawg

The ONE, or Sunday Swagger, has been one of DeMarini’s hottest slow pitch bats in recent years, and the FU-Dawg is no different. This two-piece hybrid design features a SC4 alloy handle, for an extra stiff feel, and a 4.ONE composite, end loaded barrel. The ONE is hot right out of the wrapper and ready to add some swagger to your game! ASA and ISF approved.

2013 DeMarini J3 ASA & USSSA

The J3 is the third edition of DeMarini’s popular Juggernaut line, and available in both a USSSA and ASA approved model. The J3 has a two-piece design that uses DeMarini’s patented TR3 F.L.O. composite material. The naturally chaotic and random fusing of the TR3’s composite fibers creates a more compact material that is stronger and lighter than ever before. Check out these customer reviews and see how the J3 is changing their game!

Former JustBats.com Employee, Tommy Hottovy, Traded by the Kansas City Royals to the Texas Rangers

The JustBats.com family is pleased to announce that friend and former employee, Tommy Hottovy, has been traded to the Texas Rangers. Hottovy, a left-handed specialist, had been with the Kansas City Royals during the 2012 season and split time between the big-league club and triple-A affiliate, Omaha Storm Chasers. In nine games with the Royals, Hottovy had a 2.89 ERA with 6 strikeouts in 9.1 innings. With the Storm Chasers, he had 7 saves in 41 games and a 2.52 ERA while striking out 61 in 50 innings.

Hottovy worked at JustBats.com during the off season from 2005 to 2010. He was the head of Special Projects and is responsible for the Sport Court development and spearheaded the JustBats.com Forum. Though he’s had a successful baseball career, Hottovy has not forgotten his roots and remains good friends with the people that he worked closely with at JustBats.com and stops by to say hello whenever he’s in Kansas City.

Hottovy is a native of Kansas City, MO and a graduate of Park Hill South High School, where he was valedictorian for the Class of 2000. The opportunity to play close to home was too much to pass up, so Hottovy signed to play for baseball powerhouse Wichita State University, where he received a full-ride scholarship for his athletic and academic prowess. During his senior season at Wichita State, Hottovy was named first team All-Missouri Valley Conference after going 9-3 with a 2.25 ERA.

Hottovy was drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the 4th round of the 2004 Major League Baseball draft. He began his professional career as a starting pitcher with the Lowell Spinners in 2004. In 30.1 innings with Lowell he gave up three earned runs. In 2005, he was promoted to Class A+ Wilmington, where he had a 5.45 ERA and a 3-12 record in 23 starts.

He split the 2006 season between Wilmington and Portland, Maine, with a 10-10 record and a 3.15 ERA between the two teams. He spent the 2007 and 2008 seasons with the Portland Seadogs, earning 5.61 and 5.00 ERAs respectively in each of the seasons. In 2009, he became a full time relief pitcher. He was sent back to A- Lowell for five games before returning to Portland. As a reliever from 2009-2011 with Lowell, Portland and the AAA Pawtucket Red Sox, he appeared in 76 games, giving up 63 runs in 136.1 innings.

Hottovy made his Major League debut with the Red Sox on June 3, 2011 against the Oakland Athletics, retiring the only man he faced.

2013 Louisville Slugger TPX Omaha Series

The best selling bat over the past 10 years is back and better than ever. Ladies and Gentlemen, meet the 2013 Louisville Slugger TPX Omaha. Named after the city that hosts the College World Series, which recently upgraded to a brand new stadium (TD Ameritrade Park Omaha), it’s fitting that Louisville Slugger also upgraded its Omaha to take your game to new heights. The Omaha is available in Adult (BBCOR), Senior League, Junior Big Barrel, Youth and Tee Ball models.

The 2013 Louisville Slugger Omaha features the classic one-piece design with the same high performing ST+20 Alloy that made the Omaha one of the most popular bats over the past decade. Now lets take a look at the improvements Louisville Slugger made to the 2013 Omaha.

Louisville Slugger has made the 2013 Omaha one of the most balanced bats on the market. The weight is evenly distributed throughout the bat which results in an increase in bat speed. An increase in bat speed equals an increase in power. In addition to the balanced feel, the ultra-stiff handle allows for more flex in the barrel to create an improved trampoline effect.

Louisville Slugger didn’t limit its new technology to the handle and the barrel. The 2013 Omaha is “capped” off with a new, two-color endcap designed to prevent the loss of energy when contact is made with the ball. The two-color endcap traps the energy created at contact in the barrel to give you an even bigger advantage at the plate.

Check out the full line of 2013 Omaha’s and the rest of Louisville Sluggers 2013 models at JustBats.com. Have questions?
